I first learned of Off-Site Manufacturing from watching a video about a Chinese construction company that built tower blocks ready for tenant occupancy within a matter of weeks! The company precast, built and constructed component blocks of the building which were then delivered to the site, craned into position, then permanently affixed to the structure in a carefully choreographed manner like that of the Toyota Just-In-Time principle. I knew then that this would form a large part how future construction projects were designed and carried out. Site construction can never match the repeated high quality, economies of scale and huge time saving offered by Off-Site Manufacturing, and the larger the project, the greater the benefits! It was good to see a British construction company involved, and their investment in their manufacturing facility was reassuring and impressive. Thank you for another superb video.

What wasn't mentioned is the importance of architects and structural engineers becoming familiar with these processes so that they can design buildings that take advantage of more efficient construction. The more components that can be manufactured offsite, the faster a build should happen. I would think.

With Minecraft, we've successfully driven millions of kids to enjoy building and make them proto architects. Now all we need are factories that made standardized 1x1 blocks of various materials, and let them combine them in real life. That's the future of construction.

This is by far the best program you have ever produced... I really enjoy seeing how big corporate industry is trying to move into the digital era... the next two things I would like to see is the transportation logistics involved in moving these controlled off site builds being assembled on site... Traditional methods of transportation logistics are not yet fit for purpose in this scale. Also for purposes of viewings as many more subscribers will relate to it. Can you show us, or are there domestic residential builders adopting these modular technics where you have a standard Model A;B;C variations being built offsite and assembled with different skins/ brickwork , to make them all look and feel different onsite. But the structural integrity and underlying designs are identical to benefit cost reduction. For construction building "Order to Cash" is the most single important aspect as commercially they have so much overhead locked in WIP. I appreciate there are tranches in project delivery to alleviate this congestion, but it still needs to speed up. Bankers will find this easier to finance as well. its the oldest question on the planet, How long to market.

The construction industry is already facing an acute skills shortage. Many people don't want to enter an industry seen as dirty and dangerous. Offsite manufacturing will reduce this shortage, provide skilled jobs in a safe and set environment and raise quality of materials.
@NiGhtprOwIeR5 жыл бұрын
Further to all the great points raised on this feed, what off-site is is essentially a safe, attractive and high quality way of delivering what is currently on-site. We can also deliver to multiple projects from one location. The common employment package also offers stability in location, which a lot of site staff do not get. When thinking about our people, it's important to keep their priorities first. Regardless of where we work and what we do; we all do it for the same reasons: a brighter future for our families and our world and a means to live a better quality life tomorrow than we do today.

The advantage of this new ideas is that it will address critical safety issues associated with unskilled labour and create employment however we cannot be complacent -like in the auto industry the danger of 'architectural recalls' may become common if the approach is left entirely to non architectural and civil works experts-it calls for superior controls,a critical eye for quality over quantity and best technological practices down to the millimeter-because it is about where we live and the time we spend there when the dust settles at the construction site.

Prefab is the future of construction. Seems only logical that apartments would be built offsite, reducing costs and the need for skilled labour, as well as many other benefits. I just can't understand why this is not yet the norm in the industry, there is a massive shortage of housing in the UK and building apartments in factories and shipping them to be assembled onsite is clearly the way to solve this problem and provide affordable housing to the millions of people currently without a home or who are living in unsuitable or overcrowded environments. The real question I have is why has this not been happening already, why have we not been doing this for the past 20 years?

While I appreciate that the plant is an interesting example of automation, I have to say I'm really saddened that you used concrete an the example. It's responsible for between 8 and 9% of global CO₂ production and everyone in the design team needs to work harder to use less of it.
@jehiahmaduro68274 жыл бұрын
To your point standard concrete contributes 5% - 8% of the global Co2 emissions but that is not its only drawback. The sand component of the concrete is marine sand, the kind of sand that contains many sharp and rough grains which the cement basically latches on to it. This type of sand is becoming an evermore finite resource due to the enormous global demand outstripping the rate of natural replenishment and supply. But there are companies out there looking for ways to change that. www.dezeen.com/2018/03/24/desert-sand-could-offer-low-carbon-concrete-alternative/
