This is a good expansion of subject matter for your channel. Interesting point about the quality of automobiles. It's true - we obsess over panel gaps on a car you'd need a micrometer to detect, yet we tolerate crap quality in even the most expensive consumer refrigerators. On that Sub-Zero fridge, the sidewall is damn near as thin as foil. No resistance to a bump whatsoever. The plastic trays on the Frigidaire *will* break during use. A nasty burr coming off a fastener where hands will go - unconscionable, really. I'll enjoy seeing what else you can discover about these products as you tear them down.

Yes, I remember when they did extensive testing. Then an announcement that models change so often there is no time to test and publish. Now you can only hope the frequency of repair, etc is accurate. Seemed to be for my vehicles.

@@linster249 I remember in the 70's or 80's them de-rating a car because the the gas filler was hard to use, the seats not easy to adjust and the like. A better rated car had lots of black dots for the engine and transmission, while the former hat all good mechanical rating.

I wondered, “Why not use proper wooden crates?” So I looked it up: A proper 48 x 48 x 80" heavy duty wooden crate from Uline starts at $820. Their 84 x 48 x 48" standard crate is $465. The crates alone weigh 297 lbs and 200 lbs, respectively. The weight capacity of either is crazy overkill (they allow STACKING). So that’s why no wooden crates. Maybe such crates could be reused, but now you’ve doubled the truckloads. 🤷‍♂️

No matter how well you package a product, poor handling can still damage it. The sturdier the packaging. the more people think that they handle it carelessly.

The weight has hardly anything to do with it. A standard semi can carry 45-53,000 pounds of freight with a 53 foot trailer. They are not gonna double stack these. A trailer full of these is probably 25,000 pounds. Plus truck and trailer. Weight really only matters in air freight. Otherwise the cost of shipping for the company hardly changes. A trailer full is a trailer full.

Even custom cardboard boxes are a lot more expensive than most consumers realize. Depending on production volume and origination you can have products where the box is more expensive than the product. There have been many times where I ordered something and I was more impressed with the diecutter than the object shipped in it.

Please use a thermal imaging camera when you pull open the freezer drawers. I anticipate that you will see a significant amount of the cold air fall out of the Sub-Zero basket as compared to the Frigidaire. The heat introduced by the warm air that flows in to replace the cold air that fell out will require more cooling to recover. I'd like to know how much. Also, please clarify if these units have separate evaporators for the refrigerator and freezer sections, are they inverter driven compressors, does either actually have completely separate refrigeration circuits, each with it's own compressor? How do they defrost? (any reversing valves?) What refrigerant is used? (I asked this same question about the HP system in the Model Y and had to find out from a different source that the refrigerant in Model Y is 1234yf and not 134A.) Those of us in the market for a new refrigerator are going to be watching very closely. My 1997 Frigidaire has had a new ice maker, a new defrost element and new water dispenser switch cover and is still clicking along but..... I did a lot of service work in my time and at seventy three, It's not as easy as it once was.

Air has so little heat capacity relative to the food in the freezer that losing that air makes little difference. Keeping your fridge and freezer full of something, even just water or ice, is the best thing for efficiency. I've currently got a Bosch unit with true dual circuits, inverter driven, and it's amazingly quiet and efficient.

They could maybe put some sheets of paper up to visualize the cold air loss, but as the other guy says, the specific heat of air is hilariously low compared to what you're actually trying to keep cold.

@@pasad335 yep, and if you have say a 'drink fridge' or 'fridge up north' or something, keep a gallon or two of jugs of water for the thermal mass. Loading up an empty fridge does not work!

@@whattheschmidt I will add however that if you live in an area with high humidity then the moisture you introduce into the fridge or freezer by opening the door does have a significant impact on the energy consumption. Thermal mass won't help you there either.

You can’t critique the door alignment until the units have been leveled properly. Even if your floor is flat these two items are still sitting on the package material and this could easily cause the misalignment in the doors and access panels. (Used to work with furniture that was shipped like this).

I really like that you go into the packaging, not only on the protection, but if it is recyclable or not, waste generation. The funny part is that we got the old crappy fridge from my grandparents when they moved into their new house it was a stainless steel GE it's about 20 years old now and brand new Sub-Zero has had to been worked on four times since then the crappy one that came with the house they bought still working strong

Great to have on the team, but the flip side is that they often lack the verbal filters necessary to get along in corporate America (or make KZbin videos). I'd give him some time. For example, a long-IR look whilst opening that ridiculous freezer could give a visual impression of the convection losses. Another fun one is the total door-seal area and the barbaric methods to defrost. ...Thank you for sharing what you do. Oh, please don't forget power factor and actual/billed "KWh" when you do get to that part.

This is interesting. I've always wondered what the 20k fridges are about. I searched the internet forums and see many people say something like "my parents subzero lasted 45 years" but then if you read further down there will be some others say "yeah me too after replacing the compressor it's going strong after 30 years". And I was like WTF the compressor doesn't last? My grandma's old GE fridge could have lasted 40 years too if we had the compressor replaced. I personally don't care if the shelves are made of metal. If they are good plastic then I prefer them over metal baskets. We've all seen good sturdy plastic parts on cars. I also don't care If the front claddings are perfectly aligned. For me It's the performance that counts.

If you are paying 10000 for a fridge you'd care about alignment. If a 500 cheap fridge made of mostly plastic and glass shelving can be aligned so can a 10000 one.

Additionally, the difference in the price of the products to be compared must be taken into account; by treating such different priced items as similar, is like such as complaining about the finish of a Hyundai Elantra compared to the finish of a Lexus ES250

I bought a Sub-Zero, fully intergrated, with custom panels matching everything else in the kitchen. The engineering to adjust the panels on the doors is OUT OF THIS WORLD... Really well done. Truely a great product.

Cory, I’m still watching the video…this will be a great comparison. A few years ago we built hopefully our final house (#10 house) and put in Subzero & Wolf. When buying a Subzero the rep came and installed, aligned and cleaned. A much different experience vs our past multitude of Samsung’s, Whirlpool, etc. Now I’m hoping it last 40 years like one my Aunts has.

One issue I have with Consumer Reports appliance reviews is their general focus on FEATURES, (many of which I don’t care about) vs core functionality and especially durability. I think a buyers guide that focused on these elements would be very popular. Could even have that as a subscription service.

17:11 when I shifted my interest from motorcycles to cars, I was flabbergasted by the fit and finish of cars. Motorcycle parts are like art pieces compared to cars. The weld lines of frames, parting lines of cast parts, surface finish, etc are all far better on motorcycles than cars. I guess it's because motorcycle parts are more exposed instead of hidden behind some panels.

Both Corey and Adam are highly respected people dealing with manufacturer build and quality control, showing expert observations of both expensive to the consumer must-have home products. I have recently purchased a microwave and refrigerator and wound up sending both items back to the place of purchase because of poor packaging quality control in that both showed damage to exterior packaging. I look forward to continued videos in this Consumer Series.

About the freezer shelves - grid vs plastic tub: having had had both the plastic tubs are preferable because the grids release all the chilled air out the bottom of the fridge while the tubs retain the cold air around the contents. The tubs mean the fridge has to do less work to return to temp after opening, and the contents are subjected to less warm air.

It would be helpful to compare the service responses for the damages and any other things not meeting customer specifications. ??? I personally do not like how the bottomless drawers dump ALL of their freezing air on the floor every time you open the freezer. There is wasted energy each time you access the freezer. The Frigidaire at least has plastic tubs that help hold the sinking cold air from dropping out.

Great point about the immediate loss of cold air from the freezer! Munro should put in temperature monitors in the boxes and do a time series of temperature drops in the fridge and freezer compartments after opening the doors for 1 minute. That's a good proxy for energy efficiency.

The embodied energy held by the air in the freezer area is actually quite small. It takes about 0.03 watt hours (30 milliwatt hours) of power to cool 5 cubic feet of air from 75ºF down to 0ºF. And if your freezer is full, it will contain much less air than it's rated volume. This will vary slightly by your home humidity levels, but not by much. I thought the same thing, but now that I own one, it is vastly more efficient than my old fridge.

It'd be great if y'all could try and obtain some critical parts for each, so as to highlight the difference in customer service experiences as it relates to availability of parts/documentation. It's a key pain point for customers when they eventually need a technician, which in my experience averages out at 3-5 years for just about everything.

I think Cory got it right on the Frigidaire damage being caused by production, the dent looks like it was caused from the front, hence the spike at the top, whereas the packaging was hit from the top and almost doesn't line up with each other.

First off, thanks for this - definitely appreciate this consumer teardown, really love it. Secondly, lol, it didn't take long for the new guy's arrogant disdain for "far east manufacturing" to be punctured 🤣. I have the misfortune of owning a new Sub-zero fridge and a new Wolf microwave (Wolf is owned by Sub-zero). I say misfortune because they are crap. The microwave had to be serviced three times before it finally worked reliably. The fridge doesn't come with a water dispenser (seriously, a $12K fridge that doesn't have a water dispenser), and you need to pay over a grand to get it. And the water dispenser has *never* worked properly. They changed everything on the damn thing - including the entire front door - and it still does dispense water reliably (for some reason it has a finicky motorized cover over the dispenser that often does not open properly, causing water to go everywhere). The ice dispenser gets jammed a lot as well. My old stainless steel Whirlpool, which cost $1500 20 years ago, still works like a champ. If this sub-zero had not come with the house, I would never have wasted the money on it. Get a Samsung or LG instead, I think.

Your Wolf microwave is actually manufactured by Samsung. They make it for Wolf, and Samsung owns the patent for the drawer design. I own the same one. Here is a tip - once every few months get on your hands and knees and clean the top inside of the unit. Since they are mounted so low - they get really dirty - and that will cause it to malfunction. Repair guy explained it to me. After that we haven't really had an issue with it. My sub zero has a glass door - so I got a nice carafe for my RO water.

Consumer Reports reviews Fridges, Cars etc. CR’s Oct ‘21 issue scores Chevy Bolt an 82 & the Bolt EUV a 76. I didn’t find any mention of recalls, fire warnings etc. Thanks to ML & KZbin, I think I see how I can save money, trees and space on my magazine rack.

I can't wait to see which fridge gets colder for the least power. Then to see which one has the best compressor so you can tell which one would work for longer at the least lifetime cost. I like the addition of different tear-downs to the channel. It would be interesting if you did a comparison and tear-down of a bunch of top tier solar panels so people know which ones offer the best watt per dollar. As well as which one is most likely to last the longest with the fewest issues. Keep Up the Great Work Everyone.
