"For Carl" is Carl Sagan. The movie is based on his book "Contact" published in 1985. Carl Sagan was involved in the production of the movie, but he died in 1996, about 6 mos before this movie was released.

Clinton was actually speaking those words, but he was talking about a discovered rock believed to have come from Mars. The actual footage was edited into the film to make it seem like he was talking about possible alien contact. There was actually legal controversy over the use of the presidents image and words in a commercial product. And the Carl the film was dedicated to is Carl Sagen who wrote the novel from which the movie was adapted. For another Jodie Foster reccomendation, check out the movie "Nell" (1994)

@@MattRowland No it was a meteorite they believed was from Mars found in Antarctica that had possible signs of life. There were supposedly microfossils of bacteria within the meteorite. I actually remember that press conference and Clinton giving that speech. Of course, it all turned out to be nothing and the "signs of life" were debunked. The cloning of the sheep, Dolly, in Scotland was one month earlier in the same year, though. 1996.

The Beach that Ellie was on after the ball dropped was identical to the drawing of the beach she made for her father. I hadn't noticed it before. Carl is Carl Sagan. Nicely done James, excellent reaction. One of my favorite films.

That shot of her running through the hall as a child to get the medicine, and it turns out it was a reflection in the mirror, was actually the toughest shot in the whole movie. Finding a way to film it the way they wanted without exposing reflections of the film crew took a lot of really tricky setup.

I love this movie. It's grounded in science, but it recognizes the importance of faith, not just in religion, but also faith in your convictions too. I always cry at the beach scene because Ellie makes contact with the aliens, but also gets to have a conversation with her "dad" too. Even though she knows that is not her dad, she is comfortable enough with this form to speak honestly.

This film's theme, which of course was the theme of Carl's novel, is exactly what you suggest: the struggle for the search for truth in both science and in religion. With religion, you need to have faith. Science is supposed to find truth in fact. Dr. Ellie Arroway has lost her faith in God after losing her parents yet has to rediscover faith when she has no real evidence of her trip to Vega. All this from a novel written by a self professed atheist. It is freaking brilliant! I consider myself a Christian believer and don't personally think that science and religion are at odds. Science is the ultimate religion...it can show how beautiful the universe truly is which basically proves that there has to be a God.

@@bjgandalf69 Carl Sagan himself said that he was an agnostic. He actually outright disliked being referred to as an atheist. Here are some of his words on the subject: _"An atheist has to know a lot more than I know. An atheist is someone who knows there is no god. By some definitions atheism is very stupid."_ I agree with your thoughts of science "vs" religion. They don't have to be at odds and historically speaking they haven't always been.

So great that you recognized both Tom Skerritt and John Hurt, from different movies they’ve done, but isn’t it great that they were both in the original “Alien”, probably the most terrifying depiction of alien life, and this movie, probably the most comforting depiction of alien life? Carl Sagan it was for he wrote the book “contact” if you don’t know who he was he was astronomer who also had a tv show called “cosmos” he died in ‘96 a year before the movie came out in ‘97

Carl Sagan, the world famous Author, Professor, Astronomer, Astrophysicist, Astrobiologist who wrote the novel "First Contact" in 1985. He passed away in 1996. You can dive into his history and all of the work that he was involved in or promoted and never come out again. A great american.

I was 16 when this first came out and it quickly became a favorite of my mom and me. We went several times to see it in the theater and our favorite part was when it came to the part of the "18 hours of static" and we'd stay really quiet and you could hear the entire audience gasp. lol I always watch for the gasp when reactors do this movie and you didn't disappoint. lol I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

This is one of my favorites. Jodie Foster is so good. My mother was a book worm like you, from England, born in 1934 and survived WW2 as a young girl in Brighton. Caught a rose from an American Soldier going to Normandy. We barely ever watched any movies together, but we saw Contact the week my father passed suddenly after elective surgery. The day after my 27th Birthday, and the week Princess Diana was killed. Very , very memorable flick. She would have LOVED Arrival. Loved your reaction. I can’t get enough of that movie. Amy Adams is so great in it. Thanks for your authenticity!

Carl Sagan was the Cornell U professor that helped assemble the images put on the Golden Record carried by Voyager 1 spacecraft. His TV series Cosmos intro'd many Americans into space exploration from an interesting science perspective.

If you've seen "Alien", then you saw Tom Skerritt and John Hurt in that film as well. 🙂 "Contact" is an excellent film that far too many seem to have missed. I consider it one of the best "hard" sci-fi ever made, although I probably place "Arrival" (which you've seen) at the top spot. The story behind "Contact" was written by one of my childhood heroes, the eminent Dr Carl Sagan. I never missed an episode of his "Cosmos"! Thanks for the reaction!

The German dub is even better. I kinda hate how Jodie just expresses so many of her phrases like questions. Like, I mean the infliction in her voice. That's better in German. Also the emotions translate very well in that dub. Acting-wise her performance was glorious. Very high energy. But the biggest crime I just found out: I saw on my Google tv that this movie is currently on Amazon Prime. Which, I don't have a subscription, I probably never will... But they showed the Rotten Tomatoes score next to it.. Guesss what rating this movie has! What would be fair? (Just fyi: I have rated it a 100 on my personal list)....

my rather brilliant wife who is a particle physicist was trying to use the Moon as a particle detector. She had to use an array of radio telescopes (as seen here), but said the sensation of pressing a button and having all the dishes realign on your command was... something special. Fund side note... radio telescopes are not designed to track solar system objects, they are usually looking much much much further away. The big telescope here btw was the Aricebo telescope which sadly collaped a few years back... its a jaw dropping vid with the suspended section smashing below in to the dish, easily found on yt. And yes... women DO INDEED have it very tough in science.. - also add me to the list of shocked people to learn you have not read Carl Sagan... definitely add him to your reading list.

Carl Sagan had a fantastic show on PBS called Cosmos. Some clips from it are on KZbin. I especially like the one where he explains tesseracts and the 4th dimension.

Cosmos was an awesome show. I've showed his 4th dimension explanation to my pupils a few times, and I still use some of the shows animations - like the one with evolution or how star formations change over time. Carl Sagan also explains how Eratosthenes know the circumference of the world rather well. It's important that people don't confuse the old and original Cosmos with Carl Sagan to the new one with Neil DeGrasse Tyson. I was really looking forward to the new Cosmos, being a fan of the old one, but the new one is made for another type of audience and sadly dumbed-down a lot of things.

One of my favorite sci fi films. Where science and faith converge. They don't show any aliens. Only one piece of technology which humans don't even understand. Just a movie about faith, truth and the human need to be part of something bigger. Great acting. Great cast. Carl Sagan, and his vision, is greatly missed.

Carl Sagan wrote the book. He was a brilliant astrophysicist and teacher. If you haven't watched his incredible series, Cosmos, you should look it up and stream it. It's one of the most globally successful series of all time. EVERYONE was watching it in 1980. That was my first year of college. We all gathered every week in the TV room of my dorm for each episode. The number of lives Carl touched and the number of people he influenced to become scientists is astounding. He was a huge influence on Neil deGrasse Tyson, the most notable science communicator today. He did his own version of the Cosmos series, using the same format, which paid homage to Sagan. But I think you should start with the original. Carl's passion and eloquence are a thing to behold.

Before Voyager ( I or II, i can't recall) was out of power, and just before it left our solar system, NASA turned it's camera back towards home and took a photograph of Earth. Carl Segan's monologue regarding this profound photo is called "The Pale Blue Dot." It's Segan at his best. R.I.P. Carl.

This really is such an excellent movie. I know you're a big reader and Contact by the world renowned scientist/author Carl Sagan is just as fascinating. The book goes much more in depth into various real scientific aspects of the story that couldn't fit into a blockbuster type of movie but, coming from an astrophysicist with a true gift for writing like Dr. Sagan, absolutely keeps you turning page after page in brain expanding amazement. As a big reader, it is absolutely a book you would really enjoy and comes very highly recommended by many incredible people. Cheers!

I was a big fan of the original series Cosmos and read the book after reading the Cosmos companion book and learning of its existence.

The control room seen in the movie is just a filming set, as the actual one couldn't be used. Special effects were used to integrate the room with the actual VLA, especially when Ellie rushed from the desert to that room.

Carl Sagan, astronomer and scientist, wrote the novel on which it was based, and was the host of the PBS tv series in 1980 called “Cosmos.” He also was the impetus behind the “Golden Record” that was attached to the Voyager spacecraft, which included sounds and photos of life forms on planet Earth, plus a mathematical description of where Earth is.

When I was in 6th grade, we were told to do a report comparing a film to the book it was based on. I chose this one, it just so inspiring. I can't say that it was received well by my peers, but I was already a smarty pants, book obsessed weirdo, so it didn't really matter. I love the respect with which both religion and science are treated in this work: neither has the answers, so why believe that we work at cross purposes?

I remember seeing this in theaters. But i made the mistake of buying a large soda before going in.😂 Long movie and i was squirming trying to get through the last 20 minutes. And i liked that the aliens were quite clear that someone had set up the interstellar highway long before them. And they had no idea who. Giving credence to a creator.

The point of the book is - next to the military sci-fi story - an alternate version of democracy where you have to EARN THE RIGHT TO VOTE [and be voted for] ... which seems like a good idea in these times, because many politicians treat the power they are given not very well.

Seriously watch the directors cuts or don't watch at all. Another reason to watch "Alien" is you will see Olivander in a scene that to this day is legendary and will be for another century. Also, both Alien films will give you a strong leading lady in very big rolls.

You may enjoy reading the book. The film deftly distills the concept and major plotlines of the book, but there are some plot points in the book that were cut from the streamlined film script that make the story even more compelling. In the end, I prefer the film, but I'm glad I read the book because it makes the movie that much richer. Thanks for watching.

2 actors from 1979's Alien appears in this movie : Tom Skeritt and John Hurt I think its the director's way of paying tribute to that sci fi classic .... which is also a movie about aliens.

Another Great Jodie Foster film with her doing a great job is "Nell" (1994), I'd highly recommend it.
