Just flat out fantastic. Use some sort of a paint or coating that will reflect sun and insulate. The summer sun will turn the space into an oven. Something with some grit in it, because at some point it will get slick.

As a 47 year old general contractor, I cant say enough how impressed I am with this young man. Love that he just lives the way he choses to live. Very hard worker, talented, and independent. One day my wife and I will buy a piece of land and build our own home. Im hoping sooner rather than later. We did buy a small piece of land with an abandoned ranch style home (1400sf) and we completely renovated it and built out an onsite shop (900sf) for our general contractor business. Its a good base for now, but we both want a non-traditional home.

I'm glad to see that I am not the only person out there thinking in this way. I plan on using a heavy type of roofing along these lines on the exposed parts of my structures. Definitely hail/wind PROOF and very easy to mount whatever I wish without any worry about the usual concerns. This is rather expensive but the peace of mind would be priceless! I won't care about the weather and my buildings roofs having issues with very high winds. Rhino-Liner is what I will use to cover any exposed steel and then marine paint for the top coat. I would put coating on all surfaces coming in contact with sun or earth. Expensive perhaps but I'll never worry once it's all done. My hat is off to Andrew, he gets to do what I'd like to be doing right now while he's still young and able. I hope that I can do half as well when I try my hand at building my ideal fortress in the north. And all the wonderful tools/materials to update my plans I see on these videos! Glad I found another useful channel amongst the foolishness I've had to wade through doing research for my project. Again, thank you for a well done series.

Oh, another thought. Around my house, I've used Rustoleum. I've used the primer so it bonded to the oil based paint. IT lasts for years. My aunt bought a house in 1978. It was two tone inside. Yellow and lime green. In 2010 she was in the hospital with a heart problem. I went to the paint store and told them I have washed the walls down and needed paint. I said the paint was thin and almost down to the drywall paper. This guy told me to use Valspar with primer included. I picked out a 5 gallon bucket and started in. I did a dining room first. As I was painting and when I was done, I looked back and thought "This is going to need a few coats". I went to run a few errands and when I got back I just about dropped my jaw. That room was beautiful. I'm telling you it dried and made it look as if a professional painted it in a mansion. I did the kitchen, two hallways and three bedrooms and still had paint left over. Paints have changed in recent years with new formulas coming in. If i was you, I"d snap a picture of your roof and contact Rustoleum, Valspar and a few others for their recommendations. I watched a video where Valspar (samples) commercially painted roofs didn't fade after 50 years. But their new products are always improving. Who knows? Someone might sponsor the painting of your roof. Tell them you have your youtube channel and need advice on the BEST paint for long term and color choices.

I used to work for a company painting steel structures similar to your roof. Mostly industrial bag houses and the associated ductwork. A lot of that stuff is located outdoors. We always used a Alkyd steel primer. Any quality top coat will be fine. We used mostly PPG products. And make sure you get a cheap mop, and a few gallons of acetone to wipe the roof down before you prime it.

I know andrew says he wants steel on cars and the tin foil sucks, but I'm pretty sure most of that is for safety in crashes, it's meant to crumple and absorb the force of the crash instead of sending it to you strapped inside a ridged steel box. Finding a happy medium is probably the key, long lasting and durable but not too stiff of material so it gives way during high speed collisions.

Andrew, epic videos, well done and loving it from England. I have built commercial steel framed buildings and I strongly suggest you pay special attention to potential lightning strikes. Either (best option) employ a specialist to develop a calculated technical design or deploy a dedicated earthing system based upon some technical research. I think it's especially important not simply to rely on the steel frame being sunk in concrete footings that are buried in the ground to provide a viable method of dissipating a lightning strike. You need to run copper bands around the structure and these should be terminated on copper plates burried in the ground. In addition, I think it would be a good idea to measure the conductivity of the sub-soil to ensure the charge from the strike can be effectively carried to earth. Failure to deploy an effective system could be dangerous to the occupants. Keep up the great work Andrew - you truly embody the American can-do spirit.

And now to the latest headlines: meteorologists were shocked when an EF-5 tornado struck a home in the upstate region. The tornado, although trying its best to stay together, was torn apart by the sheer strength of the structure and quickly dissipated. Neighbors were quoted later recalling "Oh yeah, that's Andrews' house. That tornado never stood a chance." Meanwhile, in related news, geologists investigating the recent reduction in seismic events in the region surveyed the structure and found that the house was in fact so strong that it had geologically stabilized a region 40km wide. The owner declined an interview but directed us to his KZbin channel.

For anyone who follows you knows that you build solid products and you have a great engineering mind. Most would be honoured to have quality work done by you. What a great shop you have and it only gets better. Keep up the great work and excellent content here on KZbin.

I am once again reminded why this is my favorite KZbin channel. Andrew films, documents, explains and gets it done! I love how his editing is so good, that I'm not tempted to fast forward. (e.g. welding this bracket, I'll show you how I start, then speed it up.) Plus the doggos! I do get a bit nervous seeing them up there without harnesses on, but they are skilled and lucky. I can't say that I'd be up there like that!

Andrew, I have around 30 yrs coating roofs and structures. I would use uniflex rustinhibitive metal primer as the primer and uniflex top coat or a elastomeric top coat.
@rodolfoplasencia4953
@rodolfoplasencia4953 4 жыл бұрын
J it doesn't contract and expand that much actually. But yes, I would go for white elastomeric after a good one or two coats of primer. And, every year or every other year I would power wash it and give it a coat or two of elastomeric on it.

Elastomeric is trash, and would create a nasty buildup over time as it degrades. 100% silicone coatings are way better.

You're right about our concern for your safety, and I felt the same way, probably pretty safe. The problem with that is if there is a spill of liquid that sends you off the roof before you can even react, like hydraulic fluid, water, or maybe paint..... Be Safe Bro..

Let it rust lightly so the slag from those plates come off, pressure wash it, then after it's dry put a liberal amount of phosphoric acid on it Then zinc primer 3 coats and then after that your primer and paint of choice, that's how non immersed surface are painted on a boat
