Hi Gary! What brand Coco Coir do you use? I have been looking on Amazon, but I have seen reviews saying some have high salt content that killed their plants. I’d like to add it to my containers this year! Thanks!!

I use worm castings in my potting soil. This year I tied to add Epson Salts as an additive. I found that the peppers and tomatoes had a stronger stalk, but also a thicker skin. I will not do that again with tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. I make my own worm castings from my worm farm.

You should use perlite to improve drainage. Also, bucket-in-bucket method provides a 1 gallon of water reservoir for the 5 gallon homer buckets. Helps avoid plants drying out and grow larger in the same volume.

I tried using the enzymes in castings to deal with lawn bugs, it was amazing! Soaked the castings and added some fish fertilizer and applied with a pump & sprinkler (ten years ago).. I used a 5-gal bucket of castings in a small garden, it was thriving and all the people walking by would rave about the garden plants in what used to be neglected grass.. Worm Castings have a huge role in the eco system to a more productive garden.

Another great video. I have been intrigued by Vermicomposting though it is much different than regular old style. I have heard the red wiggler worn is fast producing and can really break down things way more quicker than regular ones. But they are picky about heat and cold. off this videos subject and about your beefsteak tomato challenge. Im sure you seen Calikims video about starting hers and how she found a loop-hole in rules. Basically it allows her to get stalk deeper for better rooting and larger plant not necessarily bigger tomato. I had an idea to even it back out. If you took a pot cut out bottom split side (so you can put around plant without damaging it) put it into ground around plant with 6 or so inches still above ground could fill with soil when plant get big enough allowing plant to root more stalk. just a thought.

Im hopping it works (i know peat is cheap but im wanting to add native soil to see if it give a more distinctive flavor). This is my first yr growing my own garden. As a child i helped my grand-parents and parents in theirs (i hated it). I am just starting to use grow bags in the Arizona desert in my third attempt to have a vegetable garden in the desert. Low rainfall, hot days and poor soil forced me to abandon a stationary garden in the ground. Five gallon plastic jugs in wagons for movement was my next attempt. The plant spacing and root ball limited by the plastic container created a lot of disease problems. My latest attempt is a "raised bed" of5,10 & 20 gallon growbags on a repurposed commercial grade wood picnic table w/plank seats. More spacing between containers for disease control, drip irrigation for the lack of rain, breathable containers to "burn off" roots from spiraling around and a shadecloth/PVC canopy for sun control. I am using moisture control potting soil from a Big name because the grow bags dry out quickly. Do you have any experience with growbags and suggestions for vegetable gardening in the desert?

Gary,, Not sure the size of your brick , but it looks sizable , I usually get the 11 lb brick and it takes 8-9 gal of water totally saturate the coir which I happen to like, but I also like to add some course vermiculite to mine. I did catch what organic mix even though it may not be needed. I also raise my own castings and make my own tea.. I did a worm casting test once before but cannot find that test but it really shows the difference , one of the main difference was large sizable leaves. On my test I used 1/4 of the mix, but less could be used.

Hi Gary! All your videos are very informative and you have a good way of teaching, so thank you for that! I've been growing veggied in containers quite a bit because I've been in the process of getting established at a new home and haven't haven't had a space dedicated yet for a garden. I've used mostly 15 gallons so I think I've really been using an oversized container requiring more soil and amendments! I want to try the soilest mix. Will that work OK for a crop of tubers like potatoes or will that hold too much moisture? Thanks again!

Good morning Gary, I have 4 raised beds that were built within the past year. 3 of the beds have a potting mix and 1 has a mix of potting soil, sand, coco core, and pearlite. I have a variety of vegetables growing now. All of them are alive but failing to thrive. I am trying to figure out why my plants are not growing. They all have the same type of symptoms; few leaves, thick leaves, curling, light green in color. I was using an organic fertilizer with the recommended ratio on the bag. According to the directions I only fertilize 1 time every 2 months. I water all my plants at the soil level when my moisture tester measures just above the red line. I use a straw mulch on all the beds. So you have any suggestions as to why my garden is failing to thrive? I would like to feed my established plants in the raised beds the worm castings. Can you tell me if I should use the liquid or solid casting, how often to feed, and amounts. Thank you so so much for your detailed videos. I love learning from your videos.

So sound like lack of nitrogen. I would really have to know more but compost, manure in the fall would help for spring planting. Right now, I would get some Fish Emulsion, any brand. Water them with it every 2 weeks. You just need more NPK and organic matter in there, I bet. I understand with this soilless mixture you are concerned with water retention, however during the spring season when lots of rain is coming does this rot roots? I am using grow bags for my extra plants that I cannot accommodate in my raised beds. I have been employing your principle of using mulch at the bottom of containers (a rich, 1 yr finely grated wood-native soil mulch from the removal of a large tree stump that was removed from the site and has been aging for a year in a pile in my side yard) to supplement for using expense of potting soil. I add that as a base of containers with some bonemeal for longevity and then adding potting mix and peat moss/coco coir for good drainage and water retention- but I worry too much water retention is going to make for soggy grow bags? All this water retention will be great when its late July and August in Ohio but May and June has been very wet and I don't want the plants to drown before we get there!

Lucy2317 W all the excess will drain. If you have a good draining mix, all the excess will drain, no matter how much rain you get. Question, won’t the layer of wood block some of the water drainage at the bottom? If you are still worried, try placing your planting containers above the table/surface they are on. A square wood frame works well.

Do u ever mix the pine bark/shredded hardwood in the actual potting mix? I'm finding I like it a lot mixed in the soil itself too. I add a little extra lime if the plants don't appreciate the extra acidity but Im finding the moisture is better balanced when using pine bark with the peat moss in a mix. I'm in the Pacific Northwest on the Oregon coast and it gets very wet. I started heaven facing peppers too this year. I make my own Chinese Chili Oil

Good stuff. I live in south Texas, very hot. I have to water at least twice a day. Some of my plants, like strawberries, have mulch around them. When I water with a liquid fertilizer should I pull back the mulch so the fertilizer gets directly into the soil or should I pour it on the mulch and hope it gets through to the soil? None of these are in the ground. The soil here is terrible. It's all rock. Everything is in containers or a raised bed. Thanks in advance.

Just water on the plants and right over the mulch. Some of the fertilizer will be taken through the leaves and the runoff will make it through the mulch as you water. Especially if you water twice a day

We are in the desert of CA and also deal with salty hard soil. IF water cost is an issue, remove the mulch. If you have plenty of water, it can soak thru if watered for long enough. When using earthworm castings and tea, the microbes in large numbers will change the soil. They condition it, allow it to retain more water, and releases the clay and for you, salt which is what's making it so hard. Hard soil can also be difficult for the water to penetrate below the surface.

Airborne - Over the mulch - as the water percolates thru the mulch you are creating a biology web of mycorrhizal and beneficial bacteria that the plant roots interact with- a very powerful synergy is created! watch a few John Kaisner Episodes for information and explicit instruction about this subject i wish you the best aloha - p.s don't forget to add beneficial organisms to your water regime.

And lastly, after harvesting, will i be able to re use this soil-less mix the way you are showing with the second method? Can I still use worm casting tea on the plants or would it be too much for them? Thank you for the inspiration and expertise.

Thanks for purchasing it. I really like it. You can do a top dressing of the casting around the plants. Gently scratch it in. Rain watering will move the casting downward. It will help the way. If you just have tea. Just follow the routine on the bottle. It will work with the organic fertilizer. Just start a routine you like now and stick with it.
