Louellen I grew some 6-7 foot tomato plants right on my patio in only 5-10 gallon pots. You are supposed to use larger pots but they grew beautifully. I recommend using generous amounts of worm castings in your soil mix before planting. The worm castings are expensive but I think they really helped my plants cope with the smaller containers. Happy gardening!

@@louellenhackel9310 You have a wormery? That's outstanding. So as far as I know there's no upper limit on how much castings to use. I think a 1:4 ratio would give you insane yields, but I used much less. Castings won't burn plants like other fertilizer which is one reason why they are so amazing. I added mine to my soil mix before planting. About a ten pound bag for every big 20-30 gallon SIP. I think adding a generous handful to the base of your plants every few months will be great. The castings will slow release throughout growing season. I think the best answer to how much castings to add is "as many as you can get your hands on". Check out AlboPepper channel and his website also. He has the best info on SIPs and fertilizing next to Leon.

If you were going to use this method in a 5 gallon bucket & already have your PVC pipe could you go ahead & use it to water or is that over kill? Thank you for your video’s & devotionals.

Hello Leon. ...Great to see you back......I got hot pepper plants that are 5 years old in one of your tubs in our greenhouse...in the same planter jalapeños, habinaras and Serranos.. it's a pepper making machine ..they never stop producing....I can't tell you how much I appreciate your knowledge and method.....nothing works better than a self wicking planter in my greenhouse ...you should see my better boys...absolutely delicious...have a good day ...we plant are lettuce in our tubs along with tomatoes and squash and cucumbers just to utilize the space...

If you don't have a drill, I used a handheld pencil-soldering gun to melt the holes you need in the plastic containers.

Yes he said they do wonderful but on blueberries you need to add a cup of vinegar or dusting sulfur twice a year to make ph lower on blueberries!

another good one sir;;;I was given some totes from walmart for my birthday;;;they were in toy section about twice the size of five gal buckets;;;;planted tomatoes in them this last year;;;;they worked great and with the weather we had last summer;;;I didnt have to cook;;;;just go out and pick my stewed tomatoes right off the vine;;;lol;;;also the tubs barely made thru the summer;;;when I went to move them over by the fence to store for this year the lips where the rope handles attached broke when I tried to pick them up by handle;;;then when I bot dolly to load on and move they cracked down the sides and now no longer usaable;;;I have been trying to locate rancher that used mineral tubs for stock but can't seem to find a source;;;;when I stop and ask they have already thrown them away;;;I even left phone no for them to call and I come pick them up but no calls;;anyway so old tree containers and five gal buckets it is for now;;;;eight dollars a piece at wm for junk not happening anymore;;;;thumbs up and keep em comin

You need a catch pan to catch the water that will come out your hole when you water them

What about burying a large clay pot in the ground, so that the top of the pot is at ground level, in order to keep the temperature of the pot lower in hot climates, such as in southern Arizona? Thanks.

You can put a wad of tulle behind the drain holes in the bucket, and then cap the fill pipe with something like an end cap fitting or the bottom part of a small bottle cut in half or even another wad of tulle. Just make sure it's not going to blow off if it's windy.
