Containing the dichromate volcano

The ammonium dichromate volcano reaction is one of the most iconic chemistry demonstrations, yet the risks associated with the using chromium(VI) salts have led to them being banned in many countries, including recently Ireland. Despite the risks, it is entirely possible to safely execute this demonstration if you follow the proper safety procedures.

How dangerous is potassium dichromate? I did use gloves, safety glasses and a lab coat. But I did weight a small quantity outside a fume hood. Did I take safety risks?

At 1:41, when you start heating the powder, there is what looks like aluminium foil sitting underneath it. Is that an illusion of some kind, or is there really something there to help the reaction? I also didn't notice any "foil" at 1:20 when you add the powder.
