Wow!! I did this experiment for my 6th grade science project back in 1977! Made a 2 foot tall papier mache volcano with a tin can embedded in the top and covered it in thick runs of plaster to fireproof it, painted it, and filled the can with ammonium dichromate. Makes a perfect example of how cinder cones form!!! So fun to see this again! Great video! Yeah, just try bringing pyrotechnics into a classroom these days!!!

The Powder remained as residue is cr2O3 ... And in this reaction nitrogen is evolved along with water i.e, :- (NH4)cr2O7 on heating gives N2 + cr2O3+ H20 .... we study it in salt analysis (jee) as heating effect of ammonium salts .... 😊😊❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻

At high school and college we ignited the mountain with a burning magnesium strip stuck at the top of the mountain like a wick, more concentrated heat.Palomar College and SDSU grad, BS Chemistry with background in Geology. I am retired ink chemist and helped date water for a bottled water company.

When I did this in grade school 50 to 60 years ago, the instructions were to mix match heads with the chemical. Also, we built a volcano from clay, and used a very small empty juice can inside to hold the chemical.

In this reaction (NH4)2 Cr2O7 with heat gives Cr203 nitrogen gas +H20 (water) That is (NH4)2 Cr2O7----with heat-------Cr203+N2(gas)+4H20
