I used to run a reputable Fastlube and did many T-tech flushes. With that unit you filled a long visible cylinder with 15 quarts and attached the same place you did used the transmission pump to do the exchange. It also had a second visible cylinder that showed old fluid coming out. The customer could see the whole process and assured them that we were not compromising their car. We also added a bottle of Lubeguard conditioner. Back then the process was about $105.00 plus tax. Many mechanics said it was harmful but I saw it work on many high mileage vehicles. I did it on and old Volvo that would barely pull itself when it came in with 204,000 miles. Weeks later the customer came back and said it was running like new. I guess it's just a matter of opinion. Great video Ray, It brought back memories for me.

I had a flush done about 20 years ago when I had what I thought was a shuddering torque converter. When I pulled out of the transmission place, I lost all but second gear before I even got to the second stoplight. It was the crappy fluid that was keeping it going. I’ve seen it work both ways. Sometimes the fresh fluid fixes the issues, but only if the trans is still good.

I worked a few oil change shops and we used the Wynns flush machines the model with three tubes "Green" "Red" & "used" fluid and never had a issue flushing transmissions, even on older high mileage plus I some shops warned the customer and made them sign a waiver if over 86k miles. The only problem we had was a dude who looked exactly like William Murderface from Metalocalypse trying to scam us out of a new tranny claiming we put the wrong one in his El Camino. We don't install or rebuild just flush or replace filter and/or gasket.

About 5 weeks ago I was scheduled for eye surgery, and for a week neither eye was really working. I tried browsing through KZbin for music and ended up with Rain Man Ray (it might have been that bit of "Für Elise"). For 5 days before and after the operation you were my exclusive channel. I found that your narration was so clear I didn't need to see to know what was going on. And of course there were the sound effects: wrench gravity once heard is not easily forgotten. Ray, I’ll give you a little trick on pouring out the box of transmission fluid. When pouring out the fluid into the machine or even into a funnel turn the box around so the spout is at the top of the box when starting to pour this allows for the air and fluid to equalize and doesn’t make a mess.

You can also get a greater angle this way before any liquid comes out, all us real old fart Brits know this from the ancient, rectangular, 2 (Imp) gallon petrol (gas) cans that had the very short spout in one corner.

From an older guy who worked at a GM dealership in the 1980's: now that you took the car out for a test drive, which has actuated ALL of the servos and accumulators, drop the pan and change the filter one last time please. You have released debris and pink shmoo from the last hiding places and this needs to be addressed by a filter and associated fluid change. Otherwise you did get there in the end. Congrats.

I don't think he's repairing individual owners' cars. Seems most of the vehicles he's been working on have been for re-sale. Probably a small dealer with their Red Light auction cars. Such a waste of Ray's talents if that is indeed the case. A friend of mine local to the new shop tried emailing them and didn't get a response and they even blocked his email address (now getting return to sender but mine went through). I feel bad cause my buddy is a disabled vet that loves Ray's videos. He's always worked on his own vehicles but now that he's almost 60 , it's getting harder to get into the tight spaces under the hood. Hopefully he'll have better luck once Ray gets all settled in the new space.

Thanks Ray, I am with you reliving my two transmission sagas: Ford Taurus 1998. My dad's SOHC 24 valve Taurus, 32000 miles and the transmission started slipping. We were out of town. Long story short took a chance, Ford dealer, recycled all the transmission fluid, a relatively new process at the time. Never had a lick of trouble with that transmission after that. Second transmission flush story: 93 Ford Explorer. 96,000 miles. Out of town again. Transmission slippage on the highway. Drove into St Augustine. Found a transmission shop. Had them do the transmission flush. Drove said car the following months to Alaska never had another lick of trouble from that transmission. Verdict: Transmission flush works in the right situation. And it is a mystery and one does cross their fingers not knowing if it's going to work or not but two out of two times it worked for us.👍🤗

In my experience water/coolant disintegrates the clutchs and you can only really buy time. Eventually it will start slipping but how much time depends on how long the water was in there and how well it was flushed. I think you bought this little unit a few more years but only time will tell, great job ray!
@ChrisTheBmxGuy

Yep transmission clutches are water soluble. Any amount of water is terrible for them and is why it's bad to try to use a transmission thats been sitting dry out of a vehicle. Water will condense in the case from temp fluctuations and destroy the clutches.

I can't see repairing this vehicle, an 18-year-old chevy cobalt that judging from the smashed hood is at best a drive to work beater isn't worth it. I'm guessing you could pick one of these up in better shape for 25 to 35 hundred and not worry about how long the transmission might last after being contaminated with coolant. you can't really guarantee the repair and it's not worth having someone running around bad mouthing your shop if it goes out after a month or two.

When my wife's car flooded in the seventies, I removed it and rebuilt it, replaced the torque converter and idt lasted well over 100,000 miles when we sold it to my niece who put another 100,000 miles on it before selling it. The car was an AMC Hornet with a Chrysler 904 Transmission. I think that was easier and more reliable than flushing. It took me 3 hours total to do the job, and I had a clean rebuilt transmission with no worries of hidden water pockets in the many convoluted passages.

I have an 08 cobalt I bought with 70k miles 2 owner. When I got it the trans had never been serviced. at 90k miles I replaced the cooler lines, dropped the transmission pan, changed the filter, and did a partial fluid change. I just replaced the exact amount of trans fluid that came out with new fluid. It was almost 9 quarts exactly. While I was servicing it I decided to replace the transmission pan with an aftermarket pan with a drain bolt on the bottom (amazing for draining the trans for future servicing). I just want to say about the gasket you made the proper call I also re-used the factory gasket. One more thing I would like to say is that the amount of clutch material in the transmission pan was a lot thicker than the material in my trans. There was some material, but no where near as thick as the pan you showed in your video. You are probably correct when you said the trans must have been slipping.

A couple of years after my teenager had a front end collision with my old Volvo 740 (a friend did repair), I noticed purple lumps floating in my coolant recovery tank. I took it to my Volvo mechanic and he confirmed there were compromises in the radiator that allowed coolant and transmission fluid to mix. He replaced the radiator and flushed the cooling system and transmission (did latter 3 flushes), then told me to drive it for three months and return for another tranny flush. I was relieved to see that no damage was done to transmission, and I drove it several more years and sold it to said mechanic with no apparent problems.

I reused those tranmission gaskets and had no issues over the years, now if we had a customer roll in for mileage or maintenance service and we serviced the transmission more than 3 then we would replace the gasket with the same type. Never had a customer come back with leaks. Some people might agree or disagree but whatever works for your style.

I'll give that transmission maybe six months. Though you drained, flushed and filled it properly, the coolant has attacked the clutches and valve body check balls as soon as it entered the transmission. Beware of any blue Cobalts on Craigslist!

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you and the cobalt owner. Hopefully he didn’t drive it too long with the contamination to terminally damage it, that fact it shifted well bodes well for your rescue. Any additional miles he gets out of that transmission are totally due to your efforts. It’s funny you talked about it possibly being a time bomb because I consider all components on a vehicle as potential time bombs because nothing lasts forever. Hope the owner realizes what a great save you performed for him, nice going Ray!

Learning how a full fluid swap is done...given what a gearbox would cost for that rebuilt and what you have saved the customer as it sits, I say the machine paid for itself already...we the viewers learning and seeing it done is the icing on the cake...not pink icing either:-) I hope everyone in viewerland had a merry Christmas :-) I hope that your Christmas was a good one with the family Ray!!

Our shop switched from BG to MOC and it’s a hell of a lot better. IMO the products are better plus the machines are pretty easy. They all use the cars battery as power but the new coolant machine is air powered. Hasn’t arrived yet but can’t wait to see how that works

My FiL owned a BMW car. Gear box was sluggish changing gears and sometimes was slipping clutches. He took it to a BMW garage and they sent him to a auto box reconditioning center, who quoted him $2500 to overhaul. A friend recommended he see a retired mechanic who did small jobs to fill in time. He flushed out the system and changed the filter and charged FiL $250. FiL sold the car 5 years later and many thousands Km later and it was sill going strong. I hope this car does the same.

love the video ray, and this is a good attempt of putting off the ending. water / moisture will de-laminate the clutch materiel it is a time bomb it will go boom. i have had the same thing happen to family and friends and i know of a few more and they all end the same way. and before the armchair quarter backs start conditioner is only a bandage at best and only if used right.

Hey Ray if this was to happen to me I think I would have rigged up a hose to feed directly into the trans pickup port. Then I would have left the pan off and ran the trans through the gears while on the rack, maybe tape up a heavy duty trash bag to the bottom of the trans to control the escaping fluid into a big catch basin . This way the constant source of clean fluid would have the best chance of cleaning out the goo without re mixing in the pan. I think even 40 -50 quart flush like this would be worth the gamble if it saves the trans from long term damage. I recall a trick of dripping a bit of the fluid on a hot exhaust manifold. If it sizzles, it has water in it. If it just smokes, you’re all good. I think this trans will survive. Great video.

Love your effort and the new toys. In Germany it would financially not be feasible to do this operation. We did the trans-flush and it cost us about 500€. This time and effort you put in would probably buy another beater that will be good for two years. On a technical note, did you shift gears during the flush? On our 2005 CRD Grand Cherokee they did. Still drives like a dream. Doing a transflush seems to really be worth it on ye older cars :)
