I took my CPC exam a week ago and received my score in 4 business days. I passed thanks to Victoria’s videos and her CPC review course. I also purchased the 3 practice exams on the AAPC site(very important!) My advice from this experience is to watch Victoria’s videos and to do as many practice exams as you can. I just recently too an online exam from home as well as a coworker of mine did too and we both got our test results same day, or at least by the end of the day, we both took the exam in the morning and got results at the end of the day!

Hi Victoria, I received my actual books from Preppy, ICD-10-CM (2024) and CPT (2023). But I am realizing that I really want to be practicing coding using software and not the physical books. Not sure how much Select Coder is. I requested a trial, but it asked for organization (I just put student). If Select Coder is not affordable. Can I use the AAPC Pro Fee Coder Software they have? I am obtaining my AAPC membership tomorrow and was going to get the monthly Pro Fee Coding software access. What do you suggest?

I have my exam in about 2 weeks and I feel like I have been spending too much time on the ICD stuff (i purchased the AAPC course) since there are only 5 questions…what would you suggest to be able to get through the ICD-10 stuff efficiently? I feel like I am spending way too much time on that one book for only 5 exam questions..

There’s no break. You’re clock is not going to stop eventhough you go to restroom. So my advice use the restroom before the exam. Goodluck!

Do you know where on the meazure website you can find testing centers that offer CPC exams? There's one in my town but it doesn't say if and when CPC is offered.

They're not scheduling any CPC exams at the exam sites yet as far as I'm aware. There will also be a blackout period where no exams are given (online or in-person) through Jan 1 - Jan 14. You can find the locations here: www.meazurelearning.com/candidate-services

Will I be allowed to use the 2023 books in my May 2024 exam? I extended my exam voucher from AAPC and am just not ready to take it this month Jan 2024. I was hoping to add in any extra codes in my 2023 books by hand (if there isn't a crazy amount of updates). I know eventually I will need the new books if I start a coding/billing job.

The exams get a refresh every January 1st to reflect the current calendar year's code sets. Feel free to use last year's books, but just know you might be at a slight disadvantage. All AAPC exams are based on the current calendar year’s code sets, so we strongly suggest you use the current year’s books. The previous calendar year’s books may be used on an exam, but you would be at obvious disadvantage doing so. The upcoming year’s books are not allowed for exam use. The amount of preparation needed can vary from person to person, especially with a background like yours in nursing. Since you already have some experience with coding, you might find that you don't need to go back to school for an entire program. However, even with your background, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the exam's specific content and format. My videos aim to be comprehensive and can serve as a strong foundation or refresher, but they're not designed to be a complete substitute for formal training. For someone like you, I would recommend starting with my video series and supplementing it with practice exams and possibly a review course. From there, you can gauge your readiness for the exam.

So I am currently taking the CBCS program with my college but am interested in doing coding. I have done some job searching and realized a lot of employers want the cpc certification instead. Will I be able to take that exam after i am done with this program or would i have to take another program with aapc? Im feeling defeated and disappointed😞

Certainly, your current CBCS program will give you a good foundation, and it’s possible to sit for the CPC exam afterwards without additional formal education. Many employers do prefer the CPC certification, so you might need to study a bit more on coding specifics. You can self-study using guides and practice exams to bridge any gaps. Don’t be disheartened; each step you take is progress in your coding career.

@@ContempoCoding do you recommend taking the Fundamentals of Medicine course with AAPC if I have minimal knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology? I saw that it is kind of a requirement to have that experience to take the CPC exam. I am just not quite sure what to do. Also do you recommend taking the training course with aapc even though I am in the cbcs program currently(i am assigned very little to no outside work in this program)? I feel that I would get more practice and a better understanding of it if i take the training course but I am not sure what the right choice is.

Hello! I am 21 year old looking to see what certification is best for me. I was aiming for a CCA through AHIMA but after looking at possible future jobs, a lot of them surprisingly didn’t accept the CCA. It seemed as if they wanted a CCS or a CPC certification. I don’t know if that’s just the CPC or the CPC-A. I am also new to learning about AAPC because I started with AHIMA first about a year and a half ago. TYIA! ☺️

Hi there! Your observation is quite accurate; many employers do prefer the CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) or the CPC (Certified Professional Coder) over the CCA (Certified Coding Associate). The CCA is generally considered an entry-level certification, while the CCS and CPC are viewed as more comprehensive and specialized. The CPC comes in two forms: CPC-A (apprentice level) and CPC (full certification) but they are the same exam, there is no "CPC-A" exam so to speak, just the CPC. If you do not have prior experience coding, you will automatically be designated a CPC-A and remove the 'A' after gaining the required work experience or equivalent. Your choice between AHIMA and AAPC may also depend on the work setting you're interested in. AHIMA certifications are often preferred in hospital settings, while AAPC is widely recognized in physician offices, clinics, and other outpatient settings. Given your age and the time you're willing to invest, aiming for the CCS or CPC could offer you better job opportunities right off the bat. Best of luck in your coding journey! 😊

I got scammed by AAPC. I became homeless and they did not like my exam room in the library twice, so I forfeited my exam attempts. They refuse to refund me and are making me pay $400 for another exam attempt. Don't know where to go from here. I'm disabled and this was my only chance at having a career. They refuse to help me or let me take the exam again. Anyone in the same situation?
