Why is it critical to discuss, debate and dissect contemporary art today? What is vital about contemporary art discourse? A conversation with generations of critics. Those who are interested in art, enough to bother seeing or hearing what critics have to say, need to be attracted to it all. Without that 'hook' the audience slips away. One hook that nearly everyone goes for is 'perceived value equals real value'. So, no wonder that so much press is devoted to that tiny fraction of art superstars. When there is so much confusion about how to see or interpret art, it is easy to see why they go for the hackneyed proxy perceived value line. However, art that is easily perceived as fascinating (therefore valuable) can be openly and enthusiastically criticized because there is something there ... there. There is no need to argue about how to place value and attention on it.
