Very good points. I wish this realisation was arriving 20 -30 years ago. Now St Pauls Cathedral in London is dwarfed by crowds of what appears to be an example of what you describe. They would have been OK further down the river at Docklands, but they all look like flashy nightclub dressers jostling for attention , while the ancient cathedral sits quietly there behind !

You should check out Francis Kéré's designs. He combines visual elements from traditional styles in Burkina Faso, with respect to light, air flow, climate and building materials.

I can't really consider Kengo Kuma as a contemporary vernacular architect. What his studio creates is usually any oder postmodernistic "freak" building with a "wooden" mask to cover it. His use of wood is beautiful, but sustainabilty philosophy isn't there. Peter Zumthor has a very interesting take on this subject. His buildings do not reflect the Swiss traditional architecture, but I feel there is the same soul, and philosophy.

Just looked into Peter Zumthor. You're right, his buildings aren't exactly "traditional",but I like his philosophy. Didn't realize he was the one who designed the new LACMA building. Thanks!

I dont think i would mind too much any city looking like a theme park. I loved walking around disney world and im sure city like that would be a great place to live.

But European buildings are Not traditional. Traditional European architecture would be huts also.
