It is a gorgeous and magnificent plane. I've always tried to figure out what makes it so striking. I'll make an attempt. First, it's robust. Second, its wings are pretty far aft and have a pronounced sweep-back, giving the plane a sporty and space aged look compared to a 747 or A340 with their more forward placement. And then there is the cockpit with its somewhat sharply angled windscreen and its huge side windows. Of course there's also the number 2 engine, caping off the overa imposing look of the DC 10.

In October 2000, my parents and I had a great takeoff in a Continental DC-10 bound for Rome from Newark. We took off to the northeast and made an immediate bank to the right (probably no more than 200 feet off the ground). Even with a full load of fuel and passengers, the acceleration on takeoff was incredible.

@granzukakoko actually its fine. If the pilot is told "After departure fly heading 090, maintain 3000, Winds 180 @ 06, Runway 22L Cleared for takeoff" its pilots discretion when he turns. I don't remember any rule saying he cannot turn before the end of the runway in ATC school. Pretty sure there isn't. As long as the pilot can maintain visual seperation from the terrain, I don't think there is a specific rule.

Great takeoff roll and attitude, but the left turn is by designed by Newark One Departure (SID) which states to "climb to 500 ft, then left turn to HDG 190..." if one is using 22L. 22R calls for a right turn departure. I'm sure this is for noise abatement and also to clear airspace for Linden airport about 3-4 miles directly on the takeoff path. It's nice to see that great airplanes like this 10, and others still live in YTB, but reality says they will never fly again.

@GalaxyMaster99 ..yes, it was a nice looking jet and great to fly on, but sadly ..not the best safety record.The worst single aircraft disaster was an AA DC-10 taking off and rolling like this..but never recovered because an engine had fallen off...and this was not a design flaw, but due to a man made maintenance error.
@manhhilston30637 жыл бұрын
Starboard76 it was both - pylon assembly design flaw and bad maintenance that brought 191 down the hydro lines were compromised as the result of the design and was re fitted in 79 otherwise Cpt Lux should have been able to recover after V2 - subsequent to the investigation determined so. Aside from That incident all other incursions of the 10 were the result of maintenance and or pilot error -

When I shot that, I was shooting at EWR all day long...so I have wonder why no other airliner banked so quickly as this beast did - and I have the video to prove it.
@David-ty1xz4 жыл бұрын
@@Starboard76 Heavy airplanes take so much longer to get off the runway. With that said, the EWR 22R Departure requires a turn at a certain point, no matter what. So when a light airplane lifts off the ground (much earlier) it has plenty of time to get to the point for the turn, so its less dramatic. The heavy airplanes as soon as it gets into the air its almost right at the point for the turn, so an immediate turn is required.

Only Northwest Orient / Northwest and Japan Airlines ordered and operated the DC-10-40 with P&W JT9D engines (also on P&W powered 747s). Continental was an original DC-10-10 operator. DC-10-30s such as this came to the fleet much later.
@granzukakoko When I flew from a small airport that had a noise abatement procedure, we commonly would turn pretty much right after getting airbourne. Maybe give myself 100ft, then turn, but it always ended up before the end of the runway. Many other pilots did the same, some aggressively. So if it is a rule, no ones enforcing it. I've never heard tower say someone turned too soon. Whoever said its a rule is a Flight Sim junky and thinks they know it all. I may be wrong.
