I absolutely love how you are both churning up the miles, but really enjoying time spent on the views, sights, towns, and people you meet. It is amazing to watch. You never seem rushed (like so many others), and yet you are moving at an incredible pace - making it all look so easy. Last year I finally made the switch from hiking boots to trail runners, and it's amazing how freeing it is to just trudge through mud and/or water and not even care because you know everything will dry quickly. I think the 'take off your shoes' ideas are from those still stuck with 'waterproof' hiking shoes/boots. 😆

One does not obviate the other. Why not have the best of both worlds in one design?? It is possible. If we can walk on the moon. . .
@fluffbigrollingmarshmallow4 ай бұрын
@@johndonahue4777 Oh for sure! That was my point - she is doing both SO well! I however, can only do one - enjoy the hike as I plod along at a snails pace. LOL
@johndonahue47774 ай бұрын
@@fluffbigrollingmarshmallow ok. But I was only referencing the idea of waterproof trail runners with GoreTex integrated bootie built in. I'm working on it. . . And yes they seem to be doing the hike right and making the most of it too!
@fluffbigrollingmarshmallow4 ай бұрын
@@johndonahue4777 Ah - I see. For me personally, I found that when I switched to trail runners (so much lighter), I tripped way less as I got tired near the end of the day. Yes, I still do somewhat, but WAY less. I also found that with boots, I clipped one heel against my other ankle - often. Never do it with trail runners. I was more careful about walking through mud/water in boots, with trail runners, as I said, it was just freeing - just trudge through, no big deal. I've also found that even on a hike with lots of snow and post holing in the spring, walking right through freezing snow melt water streams was wonderful - feet got a quick cool down, and my trail runners were usually dry in about 30 minutes. At this point I can't even remember why I ever thought any sort of water proof boots were a good choice. But again - that's just me. As for your feet staying dry, if that's the goal, I would think seal skinz/trail runner combo would be the way to go? I have a pair, but have never used them so don't know how they are.

I did my first mini thru hike a few months back and the last day was torrential rain and minor flooding all day. I had the chance to bail after breaking camp, but literally was thinking about your comments on the Florida Trail about just get your feet wet and then you don't worry about getting your feet wet anymore... So I did, I just set off wading through the flooded fields and tracks, got absolutely drenched... and had the best day of my hike!! So thanks for the inspiration there.

Your comments about hiking wet were enlightening. I've been able to minimize that in my more limited hiking experience, having never hiked more than about a week, & usually able to avoid deep water. I'm wondering how you avoid feet blistering, having to hike wet & long with some frequency. i've never hiked in the type of shoes you're using. Is that the main way of minimizing that? I've used boots, made of leather, Gore-Tex, etc.

Alot of if upland game boots are very lightweight like Browning kangaroos and have GoreTex waterproof booty layered in. I trout fished in a pair and not a drop got in if I didn't go deep. Hoka could do this if they decided to but probably aren't thinking of through hikers, just day trippers running in the woods etc. That's sad. Also there should be available a GoreTex laminate ultra lightweight gaiter to cover the Hokas to prevent rain from top filling them. The whole system might add three ounces max. Probably half that. As is the available gear is stuck in time and lacking. Grandma Gatewood primative. They should just throw in a jar of bouillon cubes to suck on and admit they have given up. It's pathetic.
@newplanet74 ай бұрын
People don't want that.
@austinturney7454 ай бұрын
When you actually try it just walking through water in non-goretex trail runners works totally fine and they dry quickly. I was converted by an Andrew Skurka guided backpack trip where they basically insist you use that approach and it simply works and is very efficient.
