What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine, causing it to bend to the left or right. It can occur in the cervical, dorsal, or lumbar regions of the spine and is derived from the Greek word "scolios," meaning bent or asymmetrical.

How does the normal spine differ from a spine with scoliosis?
The normal spine has natural curvatures called cervical lordosis, dorsal kyphosis, and lumbar lordosis, which help maintain posture and distribute body weight. In scoliosis, the spine bends abnormally in the anterior-posterior direction, leading to asymmetry.
What causes scoliosis?
The causes of scoliosis vary:
1. Idiopathic Scoliosis:
The cause is unknown and is most common in individuals aged 15-25, accounting for 70-80% of cases.
2. Neuromuscular Disorders:
Conditions like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis can cause scoliosis.
3. Congenital Factors:
Abnormal spinal structures such as tethered cord, spinal cord cysts, or hemi vertebra can lead to scoliosis.
4. Degenerative Scoliosis:
Age-related changes in the spine, such as osteoporosis or disk degeneration, can cause scoliosis.
5. Syndromic Scoliosis:
Conditions like Down syndrome can also result in scoliosis.
How is scoliosis diagnosed?
Diagnosis begins with observation of symptoms such as an uneven gait, rib crowding, pelvic tilt, or visible hump on the back. A family member or primary physician may first notice these signs. The initial investigation involves an X-ray of the spine from the cervical to the lumbar area. Further imaging with CT scans or MRIs helps assess spinal structures and identify any anomalies.
What are the treatment options for scoliosis?
Treatment varies by age group and severity:
Observation:
Regular monitoring with X-rays every six months to assess changes in curvature.
Bracing:
Wearing a brace to prevent further curvature, especially in children.
Surgical Treatment:
Includes growth rods or magnetic growth rods for children and spinal fusion for adults. Surgical correction aims to reduce curvature and restore alignment.
What are the key considerations during scoliosis surgery?
Safety is paramount, especially in the dorsal and cervical areas. Intraoperative neuromonitoring ensures the preservation of neurological function during surgery. Advanced equipment like microscopes and nerve monitoring systems are used in specialized operating theaters.
