Some stupid shit like that would never be broadcasted. I like the phrase as well, but it ruins any semblance of realism in this context. A news station that has the ability to broadcast warnings to locals will be among the first to go in such an event. How would they know? “Oh ok, we just got word from our magic news mage that the last family has passed, cut the transmission.” Psh
@Finamajig3 жыл бұрын
I get what your saying but remember this thing is meant to be a network hijacking, whatever this is it’s not a real government broadcast (the theory with these videos is aliens but that would take a long while to explain)
@TrevorLahey33 жыл бұрын
@@Finamajig I should rewatch probably, but the impression I got was the actual network trying to warn us, with high jacked “corrupted” messages coming through in between. Either way, everything I’ve seen in this genre Analog Horror seems to be made by younger people that haven’t yet grasped the art of subtlety over blunt attempts at overused creepy dialogue like “it waits for you to sleep”. Still, I do have some respect for the work that goes into the aesthetics. I just can’t get over my disappointment with what I’ve seen so far. Imagine a world where literally nothing could kill or even remotely negatively modify human beings(aging ends after said person is physically 25, and anyone older becomes physically 25). I read a case about Japanese families who resided in Manchukuo were forced to commit suicide after the Soviets took Manchukuo from the Imperial Japanese. Before it became part of China, Manchukuo housed many Japanese people and also both Japanese and Kwantung troops who would be deployed into China to fight the Kuomintang (KMT) troops. At that time when Japan realized that they were losing WW2 along with their occupied lands throughout Asia, they tried to retain Manchukuo for themselves and make it as part of Japan because Japan didn't have enough space for residence and plantation during that time. Manchukuo was like a home to the Japanese before it was taken by the Soviets and then passed to the KMT. And also, due to the fact that many Japanese veterans couldn't accept their defeat in WW2, many of them returned home and committed seppuku. Some even took their families with them. Luckily many Japanese today don't have this kind of samurai culture. I have a few Japanese friends and they told me that their friends, families and relatives in Japan think that this bushido code is just bullshit.
@charonsferryold5 жыл бұрын
It was Germany's attitude as well. For quite some time, officials spoke of how death would be highly preferable to seeing Germany lose. As the war came to a close, they took extensive measures to ensure the suicide of as many Germans as possible, with Hitler himself famously doing it on the 30th of April, 1945.

@@charonsferryold If you were a German soldier fighting on the Eastern front of Germany, it's either you get killed in action on the battlefield or get brutally tortured/butchered by some vengeful and merciless Soviet soldiers once they had their hands on you. So if you were fighting a pointless battle against millions of angry Russians, you might as well just take your own life to avoid being captured. On the Western front, many Germans took their lifes on the brink of defeat. But there were many Germans too who surrendered to the Allies. Every American in the "room" clocked what was going on almost immediately, while everyone else needed a couple minutes to piece it together. I have seen this video and Local 58 itself numerous times, yet out of all of them, this is the one that still sends huge chills down my spine. I know people already mentioned various parts of the video that gave them chills, and I certainly agree with them. But to me, the most chilling sentence at least to me, was "Join your neighbors, your family, your God". There is something so chilling and horrifying about that line itself, coming from a person with religious beliefs. The thought of people committing mass suicide, killing their pets and children for a supposed "greater good" under direct orders by the federal government is an absolutely terrifying concept.
@ralk7048 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I watched this video when it came out and it reminds me once in a while that the Local 58 channel existed. The search term I used to get back to this channel was "if you are afraid, we will look together" because it's so distinctive, but in terms of overall vibe and ability to be unsettling, nothing really tops this video. "Join your neighbors, your family, your God", and "This message will repeat until there are none left to read it", gives me a slow, creeping chill. It's oppressive, tyrannical, unfeeling, but at the same time full of despair. It's a bleak situation indeed, that alien invasion (moon being the "51st state") contains such inconceivable malice and harm to humanity that it drives a nation to broadcast this message as some form of salvation. The lingering doubt is that it's supposedly accidental this time, but we don't know if the "hoax warning" itself is interference - it's in theme because the inability to trust these official/safety messages is just what Kris the author is trying to show.
@averagebub Жыл бұрын
@@ralk7048as much as I wish to believe that the message was indeed a hoax, the title card near the end seems to indicate otherwise, suggesting that the plan was real, but was played at the wrong time. But the scariest and most successful part of this video is just how real it feels. Considering the tape is dated from 1970, if someone were to see this live on TV, lots of people would've believed it, even if it was a hoax. The concept of people killing themselves because the US "lost" to their worst enemies is a silly concept when thinking about it, but the way it is portrayed here makes it feel so real that it is entirely believable. In my opinion, this video is perhaps more terrifying then most horror movies just because of the dread you get when you watch this and other videos in Local 58, rather then cheap jumpscares.
@ralk7048 Жыл бұрын
@@averagebub You're probably right, it's already scary in retrospect, but if it really was the 1970s when tensions were at an all time high, and this went live on TV, the "power of the situation" in human psychology would have caused hysterical, uncontrollable panic. And there is the truly terrifying and undeniable possibility that the shared experience makes it so believable people might actually obey said command. I think there are two dimensions to horror, there's the external and internal dimension dealing with outside threats and the malice within the human soul, and also the visceral and imaginary dimension, where you have the highly visible jumpscare/gore, but also horror implied off-screen. Letting people fill in the blanks with their own versions of events shakes people up far more than a finite visible depiction.

just some fan lore At approximately 3AM on March 17, 1968, the television station Local 58, which serves the southern half of West Virginia, experienced a very strange anomaly. Just after the broadcast day ended, the station was interrupted by a message coming from the U. S. Department for the Preservation of American Dignity. It was a premade contingency message to be played "in the event of complete surrender to insurmountable forces", instructing Americans to commit suicide or assume the "victory position". The contingency message's broadcast began increasingly unstable until it was finally stopped after hasty efforts made by Local 58. Although Local 58 apologized for the hoax, the incident did result in 8 suicides in West Virginia. Almost immediately after the message, rumors and conspiracy theories regarding the message and the Department of American Dignity rapidly spread, but President Johnson refused to address the issue. It was not until 1975 that the issue was addressed; President Gerald Ford admitted that the contingency message was indeed legitimate as well as the department, but assured the public that the broadcast in 1968 was unintentional. The department was disbanded the following year, and the incident is largely what caused Gerald Ford to lose the 1976 election.

The most horrifying thing about this is that something like this actually happened in the closing days of WWII. In Okinawa and Saipan, propaganda convinced many Japanese civilians and soldiers that surrendering to Allied soldiers was a fate worse than death. According to several reports, entire families killed themselves either with grenades distributed by the military, jumping off a cliff, or with the method most available to them at the time. The exact number of civilians that committed suicide are unknown, but Okinawa and Saipan lost half of their population following the war.

The true chilling thought of this is the unseen implication. By any normal sovereign nation's means, holding the US is defacto impossible. The US could conjure tens of millions of armed guerilla fighters in a few weeks, and would readily do so in response to an invasion. The fact is, whatever compelled the US to surrender in this broadcast was so overwhelmingly powerful and so horrific to behold that not even surrendering to rise another day was considered. Whatever the US lost to was so monstrously evil that it was decided that the best course of action would be to ensure that no one would be subjected to a single moment of its sovereignty.
@rusva3755 Жыл бұрын
It would definitely be something along the lines of nuclear weapons fired from the enemy’s side. But if it wasn’t… …or if America fired the nukes and even then it didn’t work… …oh no.
@elchungo50264 ай бұрын
I interpreted it the complete opposite way, as in that whatever ideology or government that had taken over the united states in this timeline was so extreme as to encourage mass suicide in place of surrendering to the UN or whoever is invading here. This very closely parallels with the mass suicides of both high ranking nazi officials and random civilians in nazi germany at the end of world war 2.

The most chilling sentences in this episode: “Place muzzle to roof of mouth. Thank you.” “This message will repeat until there are none to read it.” “Local law enforcement has been ordered to ensure your compliance.” “REGARDING YOUR CHILDREN - Tend to them before yourself and use a calm, soothing tone.” This series is a masterpiece. This episode is especially frightening because of how realistic the possibility is of something like this being planned by a government.

Y'know I went through the comments and couldn't find a single person talking about the slide that I thought was the most horrifying in this video: "The 51st State is not a place" THAT'S terrifying. I think it's implying that the 51st "state", is a state of being. That by commiting suicide en masse the entire country transcends it's physical 50 states and BECOMES the 51st state, together. The spirit(s) of America becomes the 51st and final state of the "Union". This isn't just a spooky, surreal, final act of a defeated government. The cosmic horror is alive and well, if subtle, even this far back in Local 58's history...
@natsuyuskk Жыл бұрын
another thing thats plausible is the fact that the moon might be the "51st State", and with all the other theories pointing towards the fact that the moon might be an eldritch horror that has long been observing mankind, which in turn makes it not a state, but a *Living Being* . It's also supported by how moon-centric the other episodes are

The most chilling parts of this episode: The little glitch just after it tells you to commit suicide shows a test card stating "your country needs you to say goodbye with pride." - the 51st state is not a place - this message will repeat until there are none to read it - front lawn, face up, feet together - the fact it was announced as a hoax afrerwards. - the "thank you" underneath when it tells you to commit suicide. - that tempest universe ripped off the whole concept of this series.

In an era of stale and vapid jumpscares, it's fresh to see such a perfect storm of truly disturbing horror. It gets "that feel"-the one when you were eight or nine, and witnessed the "end of the day"- and felt alone, as if you were truly the only one in the world awake right now. The feeling that, at one point in time, this really, truly could have happened, and the warped patriotism and existential horror of the "American Ideal" being defeated... The scariest part about this for me is that, at least in the context of the Cold War Era, this feels like something the U.S government could have legit had or at least considered. I don't think so, buuut the puritans among the Americans do give me the vibes of a Jonestown-like sect too, with all their insane misguided religionized patriotism and outspoken willingness to die for the US at all times. Multiply that with the Cold War factor and I shudder with you mate
