Very nice work Kim...you can tell her I said that Bonnie F. :) I will check out the website...is it your guys' business? I'm just curious....I would love to have a business doing what I love....ahhh....fyi....I make beaded gem stone, shell, metal, glass, seed beads, etc...jewelry...I also work with mixed media, wood projects...that seem to always look kind of like folk art..imo...anyway enough about me...I'd love to hear from you gals...take care !!!

Hi Jeff, Thanks for your comments! Yes, all of the steps and applications are the same. Although I have used many thinset brands with glass some do a better job than others so check your thinset to make sure that it is suitable for glass tile applications and you're good to go.

@kimwozniak56634 жыл бұрын
Yes, If you are intending on using the container in an exterior application use an adhesive like Lexel or other silicone type adhesive that is recommended for exterior use. If your container is plastic make sure it is stiff and not flexible. Any flex in your substrate will/can cause your grout to crack.

Are you safe not to use a sealant on tile that is not high fire?
@not_today_satan_72 жыл бұрын
I made a mosaic table top with stained glass. It's a indoor table but I anticipate somebody setting a drink glass on top of it. Therefore I want to seal it. What is the best easiest product to use? Can I use a polyurathane? Can I use modge podge? It would be almost impossible for me to only seal the grout and not get any sealer on the glass. Can I put grout sealer over the whole top and quickly wipe it off?. The glass pieces are super close together so it seems like I need something that can go on grout and glass without damage to either. I don't want to take away from the shine of the glass. Can I just use a spray acrylic sealer ? Thank you love your videos
@MakeitMosaics2 жыл бұрын
Your question is so timely. No kidding just today I was editing a new video about making a mosaic table top for outside! I will post soon. Kim and I have pretty strong feelings about not sealing, why? Really a lot of work and sealants trap water, both in a protective manner, but also underneath. If any water finds its way under the tabletop substrate that may cause damage. Unless the work is very high traffic (a floor,) it may be far less work to scrub the spill out of the grout than do the labor intensive work of sealing, You must get the sealant into the grout and get it off all the tiles - yep every single piece of glass otherwise the sealant will dull the surface. Recommend you use the same manufacture of sealant that you used for grout. If a light-colored grout bleach in a spray bottle may do the trick if red wine was spilled. NO NO NO to modge podge, or spray acrylic. You could pour a resin over it, but confining the resin may be a problem (table would need a lip). You could get a custom piece of tempered glass to put on top. There are grouts available that have sealant properties already in them, such as Laticrete's Permacolor. Good luck. Bonnie

Is the grout sanded or unsanded? Which kind do you use?
@MakeitMosaics Жыл бұрын
We always use polymer fortified sanded grout.
@julieblake40884 жыл бұрын
Thank you that was great and very informative. Do you seal your pieces at all, or do you believe that the polymer in the grout acts in this way?
@kimwozniak56634 жыл бұрын
I personally do not seal. I feel the polymer is enough. It has also been my experience that if the grout gets stained or mildewed it is much more difficult to clean if it sealed. I feel like what you are trying to clean off gets caught up in the sealer. If your main concern is keeping the water from soaking in. We already left the pot unsealed so sealing the outside won't help much. The water will come from the inside out. The most important thing is not to leave them outside in freeze thaw states.

Hi.. I really loved your tutorial.. I am doing mosaic for the very first time following your instructions.. I left a damp towel inside my terracotta pot after finishing with the thinset. However, when I checked after 24 hrs, my mosaic tiles were moving with visibly runny thinset. The thinset was no longer peanut butter consistency or even thicker. In fact it absorbed the water from the pot. Can you please advise what should I do differently to avoid this situation? TIA
@kimwozniak5663 Жыл бұрын
Hmmmm. Can you advise what brand/type thinset you are using? I suspect it may be the premixed variety, which it not the correct product in this application.

@@kimwozniak5663 I am using the acryl pro tile adhesive
@kimwozniak5663 Жыл бұрын
@@srishtisinghal3319 The instructions in the video are for a cement-based adhesive. Cement-based adhesives Cure to set/harden. The damp towel prolongs the cure time, making the bond stronger. AcrylPro is an acrylic-based adhesive that dries to harden, so adding the water and the wet towel prevent it from drying and making it weaker. Although your adhesive suggests that it is for mosaics, It does not make it suitable for all conditions, and it would not be recommended in the instance of constant water presence in a flower pot. It is a product made for homeowners to do backsplashes etc. You can finish your pot with it but stop damping the pot. I can not speak to longevity if used for a plant? I have no experience using it.

Did you state that mosaic pots such as this one cannot be left out over the winter????? Our area has temps down to single digits on occasion. I wanted to mosaic a terra cotta pot for a toad house in a fairy garden but want to leave it in place year round. Bad idea?
@kimwozniak56635 жыл бұрын
Cynthia, It will really have to do with how well protected it is and I assume that as a toad house it will be upside down and therefore not really holding moisture. They can withstand freezing temps. I store mine dry in an unheated garage in Wisconsin. If it soaks up moisture outside from rain and/or snow and then freezes the terracotta will degrade. If in your climate you have left terracotta pots outside without issue it should not be a problem. It is really about the pot not the mosaic.

@kimwozniak56635 жыл бұрын
@@trishfrench1927 First did you use pre-mixed or regular Thinset? If you used Premixed then you need to remove the cover and stop adding moisture. This material is quite different from the thinset that you add water to and mix yourself and needs air and no moisture to dry. It is also not nearly as water-resistant so it shouldn't really be used where the moisture level is high. If you used standard thinset from a bag I suspect there is too much additional moisture. You are safe to uncover and allow to set. I used a grey-green grout on the pot in the video. It may be difficult to find but as Bonnie mentioned natural grey would be nice I usually error on the side of darker grout rather than light.
