I'm guessing the remake's stage 5 is a nod to that one weird boss in "Contra: Shattered Soldier".

You need to see contra hard corps for Sega genesis, stage 5 is just a copy and paste from the genesis game

Goddamn Konami! I remember being psyched about this game (because at the time I didn't own the snes original) and thought it was going to just like (or close) to the Super NES version of one of my fav action titles....BUT PORTABLE! The first week it was released I played it at a gamestop as a friend worked there. I was floored how TERRIBLE it was. I saved my money and bought Castlevania Circle of the moon instead.

Hi I was a young teen during 1988 when the original Contra was released my brother & I would play Contra for several hours this Contra is very similar to the original this is a nice upgrade still have the Contra roots very cool give Contra a chance have a great day :)

Is it possible to dodge the bullet at 13:30? I tried everything still couldn't dodge it on emulator.

You have to lure it to fire. Go below it so it fires but return right before it catches you. Otherwise you can’t dodge it. At least in the snes version it works. You can also try to destroy the cannon before it fires at all

is it posiblle, the only think you need to do ks to bait with a jump that cannon, after a few jump baits, that cannon waste that shot and you can pass with no fear to be killed because he can only shot once

I'm guess ing that the Super NES' famous Mode 7 graphic effects couldn't be used for the GBA and that is why some of the stages are different.

It blows my mind that they didn't include those stages. The GBA was capable mode 2 which is similar to mode 7 i.e Mario Kart Advance, F-zero. I'm guessing they couldn't fully replicate the stages and or wanted to showcase the genesis stages. Similar thing happened on the Ghouls and Ghosts GBA game.

I think it was probably a time crunch thing - if the fully 3D Asterix and Obelix is possible on the GBA, they sure as hell could have brought those stages over from the original.

It may have also been a legal issue, Mode 7 required 3rd party hardware on the SNES. I think that's what the GBA version of Yoshi's Island was basically completely remade instead of being a straight port

U. Reverie Mode 7 was a graphics mode built into the SNES, you’re thinking of the Super FX2 chip. The GBA was more than capable of it actually, matter of fact it was capable of a parallax two layered version of it which the SNES could not do. The bottom line was that this port was a budget title, and it was probably easier time wise to bring the Genesis stages over than to port over the overhead ones.

This definitely looks better than either of the NES titles. It's basically Contra III with a couple of levels from Hard Corps, neither of the terrible top-down stages, and bad music. Pretty decent experience if you ask me. Would have been better if they had just made a new game though.

Didn't even know this Contra game existed till today. No atrocious overhead levels!! I'm in. That was the one thing that ruined Contra Alien wars for me.

I don't get where the hate comes from. I would have gladly picked this up had i known it was essentially Contra III without those terrible overhead levels. Seriously, those levels sucked. I'm glad they replaced them with (actual good) levels from Hard Corps.

The hate comes from the poor way they tried to work around the screen crunch combined with the removal of the weapon switching and bombs, plus the conflicting graphical style of the Hard Corps levels, which were designed around a health system and didn't get any changes whatsoever when it was brought over to the GBA, plus a whole host of other flaws in the controls, missing graphical touches and such (e.g. Stage 3).

Honestly, I liked the removal of the weapon switch & bombs better, makes the game easier than limited to just a single powerup idk what's the fuss with the porting, but knowing my roots with contra, the difficulty makes it more fun overall (and also make a homage closer to the very 1st Contra), my 2¢ edit: Ok, there are differences with the 2, the gba port is smaller (otherwise it would actually be harder than Contra III bc you and your enemy'd be so cramped that you'd pretty much die much more), although they could've shrink the size of everything more but I wouldn't bet on that either while they tonned down the enemy movements.. although a little too much if you ask me (either got afraid or just lazy, give or take), they also nerfed laser gun's rate of fire as another thing, as saying, I prefer the single slot better than with switching (or both) and bombs, my other 2¢

This port is a sick, disgusting joke. And sad thing is, there are more disgusting ports on the GBA (Mortal Kombat Advance and Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis).

@@jballs5434 Compare the visuals and music of this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpipiKyXnc15etU To this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppDCoIWgaphleNE The GBA was powerful enough to do a way better job of transferring the SNES spritework, and is also capable of much better music adaptations than what was in the final game. The Hard Corps stages would be fine, the problem is the migration of Contra III and Hard Corps was done really lazily and it isn't as good as it could and should have been.

Wow, just wow. This GBA remake are complete weak and terrible worse as Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis. Especially the GBA version soundtrack of this game sound bad enough. This is exactly why I'm better off buy Zelda Minish Cap, Klonoa Dream of Empire or Sonic Advance Trilogy over this. Even I also better off sticking to SNES version of classic game where it had better sound and music.

Also the GB port by Factor 5 did retain the screen clear bomb and top down levels,despite missing the dual wield and laser,it is very impressive for a GB port

Fuck me running, this soundtrack is awful, and combining Stage 5's theme with one of the final levels of Contra: Hard Corps, and KEEPING IT GOING ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE BOSS FIGHT, is dissonant as all hell. And soundtrack aside, did they really not have the capability to replicate Stage 2 and 5 from a freaking SNES game on the GBA? Or at the very least, if they really and truly had to replace the stages in question (frig knows that Stage 5 is nobody's favorite stage from the original), why replace them with stages from a game with both an art style that clashes heavily with the Contra 3 aesthetic, and is designed around game mechanics that Contra 3 does not possess? You could probably do worse than this port, but you could easily do a hell of a lot better, too.
