haha, yeah I remember playing this as a kid like ''OH great this'll be just like the other Contra!''..............that game collected dust until the rental was to be returned. Maybe this playthrough will show me something i missed as a kid

It's kinda clunky yeah. And certain parts where the game doesn't load props correctly/loads them again if you get back are a bit annoyingn at times. The "box drop" in level 3 is annoying with 2 players.

This is one of those games people need to play on an emulator that fixes both the lag from the CPU's lack of power and that sprite limit flickering fix.

@@shrim1481 That's because this game is Arc Hound, the Contra name was only thrown on it in the US to sell on name alone (it being a late release, I never saw it for sale, till years later, when I got it in a pawn shop). It likely didn't sell a ton of copies, and probably not a big production run for it. Nintendo Power magazine however did cover the game. The game was cancelled for it's original Japanese release, where it would've been Arc Hound.

I remember picking this up once as a kid at the rental store, brining it home, and thinking "This isn't Contra..." I wasn't even aware of the slowdown at the time. Back then I simply could not get past the title. As an adult I can move past that, but now I cannot get over that slowdown.

I kinda liked it back in the day, but of course, it's not the original Contra or Super C. It could use some performance hacks for sure. It's also quite easy all things considered from what I recall.

If I had to guess, the performance problems of this game were related with a deadline to hit the shelves before the holidays.

Alternatively, the game literally wasn't finished and they tied up all they had working just to make some kind of a return on it. Optimization usually comes last in a development environment, which this game never even came close to. That and it was seen as a game for a legacy console so it was given less care - the fact Contra 3 runs as great as it does on a console notorious for slowdown shows where their priorities were.

gradius iii for snes, tmnt 1989 for nes and parodius 1990 for nes suffered low-frame issues too, like contra force did.

Gradius III was Konami's first SNES game, they were still learning the console, Parodius Da was ambitious for the NES/FC (they tried to make it do too much), TMNT wasn't so much frame issues, but Konami unfamiliar with the comic and cartoon series.

Curiously, i have played a bootleg version of sorts of this game. It's pretty much identical except in the characters' names and portraits. Burns is named Rambo and looks like a grump guy from a 80's action movie poster, Smith is Guile and looks kinda like Leon from RE but with more muscles and dark hair, Iron is Ryu (yep, Ryu) and looks like a discount Toriyama character while Beans is Bill and has a muscley asian guy as portrait. The rest is identical, even the bosses, dialogue and ending. It had no intro though.

as interesting of a history this game have *even to the point where it was mentioned in the anniversary collection* I feel like konami could've re released this in an improved state in the collection *even if M2 needs to make massive improvements for the performance, considering the collections are on more powerful hardware, but hey, maybe it's just a pipe dream, would've been nice to have this in the collection, whereas castlevania got kid Dracula on nes nearly 30 years after its original release.

Beautiful memories 😍 I bought a 7 in one cartridge from Singapore! There was this one along with Goal, Ninja Gaiden, Chase HQ, rare version of Mortal combat and i don’t remember other two. Anyway it was robbed by one of my friends 😅 great days! Most of my friends only had played normal contra and not this.

I wonder if the overall opinion of this game would be different if it wasn't given the Contra name? I know that this is a reskin of another game and they just slapped the Contra name on it. Which was obviously a mistake because the first 2 Contra games for the NES were so great. I would have to think that it hurt this game because all people did was compare it to the others, and its obviously inferior.

@@PapaJoJ A good modern solution, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it released in an unacceptable state. It's like when the PC community provides tips on tweaking INI files or installing mods and patches to make a game stable. Helpful, but we shouldn't have to do that just to make a game playable.

There isn't much point talking about what was at this point though, just a simple tweak with an emulator will make this a much better experience

The slowdown problem is entirely fixed in modern emulators. I wouldn't even mention it in the review, it's literally a non-factor. Probably less then 0.1% of people playing it nowadays are doing it on an actual hardware NES.

This game, like Parodius Da, were far too ambitious for the FC/NES to handle. Yes, it isn't Contra, and due to overambition, it slows down a lot, but the game is highly entertaining to play. Just pretend the Contra name doesn't exist on the front of the cart if you own a copy (I'm lucky to have a copy, but good luck getting one now without paying high prices), or on the title screen.

No way Konami really tried to make this pass as a "16-bit experience on the NES". Return of the Joker and The Immortal laugh in this game's face all day long. The performance and the uninspired graphics put it in the same level as 1942 or Athena, and that's saying something.

OK, I gotta be honest here. I always rather liked this game. Sure, it's definitely not Contra and the slowdown can often be really irritating. But, the soundtrack is good and it does have some other great things going for it. It's not great, but I just can't bring myself to hate it with a burning passion.

this is the worst slowdown I've seen on the NES, I can see why this was cancelled from a Japanese release... this should exist only as a prototype but Konami got greedy... there's not even that much going on to justify the slowdown either, this was a work in progress not a finished game.

Yeah the slowdown is pretty terrible. But if you want to see an NES game run like shit, check out Ultima Warriors of Destiny. This is like turbo speed compared to that game 😂
