If you can detect a torpedo then you could counter it with a smaller torpedo that detonates in the proximity of the incoming torpedo and disables it.

The US has deployed such counter-torpedo systems aboard their larger ships. They are relatively new and basically untested at this point. This is why an LA Class attack sub is always included in a task force.

Unless the torpedo is stealthy enough, you can. Rushing through the water at 40-60kts with fast props (they cannot have large, slow props as the torpedo tube is not several metres wide) makes some noise. But if the torpedo comes in from the baffles or some other blind spots (say, masked behind underwater "terrain") or even reduces it's speed for stealth ...

Interesting.... I had just yesterday saw a video showing these torpedoes are specifically designed to counter these exact counter measures, and now this one is telling me these counter measures can counter it. Perhaps these guys are to use to making commercials for land lubber products. I'm not sure which one to believe, seems like one or the other is a scam.

Theres no torpedo in the world with 100% accuracy nor any countermeasure (CM) that works 100% of the time. Only because there are torpedos with the CAPABILITY to avoid such CMs doesnt mean its completely unaffected by it. In the same way a CM may fool the most advanced torpedo or doesnt fool an older one. Its a thing about better odds the more modern the technology. But also of course this is a commercial to sell this product.

Very logical actually but this system is no longer effective :) Now new generation torpedoes like MK48 ADCAP can classify smart decoys and go around them then begin their searching instead of directly pass decoy and begins search. In a situation like in this video, the torpedo most likely go around (draw half circle) from right (because of the vessel's last known bearing and heading) and it simply pass all these decoys and able to clearly listen and acquire the vessel. Of course this situation applies when torpedo lost it's wire. Because of wire-guided torpedoes can be manually guide from it's parent submarine, none of the decoys can be effective against them.

They could also program an algorithm that computes the known characteristics for a vessel so it could rule out false readings based on where it would actually be possible for the the target to be, by comparing the last known speed and bearing as well as the targets abilities to all of the readings being received.

However because of this the propellers are always most secret part of the submarines and they never be revealed. This is why they cover the propellers of the submarine even while launching them to sea for the first time. Because the enemy knows the exact shape and size of a propeller can fine tune their sonars to look for a spesific sound range.

To defeat any torpedo, just have a few guys on the outside of the ship firing 12 gauge magnetized bird shot in the direction of the incoming torpedo, it will trigger it to explode.

This is bunch of BS. Modern torpedos can eliminates such noise. The best way to evade a torpedo is to deny its launch in the first place. Also, the Russia VA-111 can reach speeds upto 200Kts and will reach the target way before these tiny things are even deployed.

Do some research first. That 200kph torp can't track anything at that speed and is "dumb" 'till it arrives in it's designated zone, then it slows right down-like a regular torpedo and starts searching. It's dumb nature, is why the U.S hasn't shown much interest in pursuing that line of research. You're better off with something like ASROC, as it's still dumb whilst en-route, but is a lot faster than 200kph getting there and is invisible to the sub 'till it drops in the water. Imagine the noise a 200kph rocket torpedo with a shield of plasma around it makes! The same thing that makes it's onboard sensors useless. Speaking of signatures screaming "I'M OVER HERE, HERE I AM", the enormous heat signatures generated by supersonic missiles is why the U.S and every Western nation has stuck with high subsonic and passive seekers for their latest anti-ship missiles. Something hypersonic would generate so much heat, it would be detected immediately upon launch from space. Speed; is a poor man's answer when he can't have what he really wants, stealth. Not to mention NATO has been contending with supersonic anti ship missiles and even hypersonic ABMs since the '70's, so they have many layers of defence against them. Something half a ton travelling at 800+kph hits so hard it doesn't even need a warhead and even with an active seeker would only become visible once it breaches the radar horizon which is a mere 40kp from the ship. If it's LO and passive; you have even less time. And that's the timeframe that matters.
