Grandpa and I went everywhere in his old blue Ford. My favorite times were when we'd go up to the flea market on Saturdays; I'd stay over at his house Friday nights so we could get up and get going by 5:30 AM, when the sun was just crawling over the pasture and the grass was so wet with dew that you'd be soaked to the ankles after just a few yards walking in it. But I digress. Bless JJW and this song for always bringing back those happy memories.

I am crying listening to this. This was my childhood. My dad used to let me drive (although I’m not sure it’s as right to say he let me drive as it would be to say he *made* me drive) while he sipped wild turkey and chased it with a 20 ounce Coca Cola until one or the other was empty. Then he would either stop at a gas station for more coke or the liquor store for more wild turkey. We were in an old Chevy S10. Those were some of the best days of my life. Times were simpler back then, hitting old dirt roads as a 9 year old kid while my dad blasted JJW and got shit faced drunk. Then keeping the secret from my mother that I drove his drunk ass around 😂 He is now 11 years sober but this song and others by JJW still remind us of those carefree (or so we imagined) summer nights in Bowdon, Georgia. RIP JJW. Love, Me and Dad

Here we call it "The Hondo Hill" So several (20 30?) years back I was out in Luckenbach having a few & picking some songs. I decided hit the Hondo hill & go for the record, imaginary as it might be. With a fair buzz I hit the top of the hill, radio blasting & eased my old giant suburban into neutral. A few minutes later started slowing down & got into the smaller hills still coasting along. Then I caught a smell like burning clutch or hot engine. The moral of the story is..... dont EVER put an auto in neutral with the cruise control on! LOLOLOL That old suburban was never the same.

I first saw JJW at Billy Bob's Texas in 1982. I went by myself, and was lucky enough to get an odd front row seat at the box office. I got a little drunk, and before the show was over, JJW cussed me out from the stage. I felt like I had arrived. Then, in '84, I saw him again at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood. I wanted him to sing TOO OLD TO CHANGE, but he refused. I got a little drunk, and before the show was over, JJW cussed me out from the stage. Having been cussed out in two states probably isn't a record, but it was a lot of fun!
