Thanks Shane! It's similar to some of the box art circa the early 2000's. I tried my best to copy it back then, and it's been a go-to recipe ever since.

This is the best Aeldari painting tutorial I've seen! So in depth, with each step really well explained. I love how you show the wet palette as well so we can see the paint consistency. Small details like that make a big difference! I can't wait to go back to my Corsair Kill Team and give them this treatment to get them to the next level!

Matt great stuff as always. The leather is especially amazing! I was wondering how you came up with wyldwood + doombull? I feel like garaghak's sewer would be a close fit too. Also you've convinced me on skelly horde for creme. I'll be trying it next time out on my reiklanders.

Garaghak's sewer is close, but it's a little on the yellow side. Since I had to match an existing color scheme, I needed a dark brown with some red in it. Doombull brown brings in the red tone and adds some opacity. Wyldwood could probably be swapped out for another similar dark brown, but I felt that it needed to be a little more red to better relate to the highlight layers that follow (as well as to better match the old Citadel Scorched Brown color that I originally used). great tutorial they look awesome. I'm wondering what spraying them grey and then white all over does? I've seen zenithal (i think its called) before but not rreally anything like this. Is it essentially the same thing? Thanks

thanks! It's effectively a zenithal spray, just a few notches lighter that the black>white method that is popular right now. I really dislike starting with black; it's way too dark. Starting with grey instead means you don't have to spray as heavy with the white paint, and the final prime is much more smooth.

When I paint something my order of operations is to base coat everything first then do shadows and highlights as needed. You do one object / part at a time to final highlight then move to the next bit. Simply put: why? what is the reasoning there?

that's a great question! There are benefits to both methods and I usually find myself doing one or the other (or a combination of the two). For the most part, it doesn't really matter very much. Paint in a way that you enjoy and makes sense to you. Sometimes I want to see the finished result of an area before I decide on how to do something else. Or I may be enjoying part of the process enough that I just keep on highlighting it. Most of the time the reason is practical: The main thing I consider is: "when I paint this section, is there a high probability I might mess up an area next to it?", if the answer is yes, then I'll likely try to finish that area to completion before moving on to the next. Drybrushing would be a great example of this, and why you would want to drybrush an area before basecoating the things next to it.
