Hi Warhipster, I plan to start painting and I buy a few miniatures already. Because your farb shemes are the coolest on YT, can you tell me, what colors I shoud use for a standard Dark Angel. I want to try first a bunch of non hero miniatures because my funds are limited:(. Thx in advance.

The list of paints above are what I would use to get something like a Dark Angel Intercessor Battle Ready. If you’re looking to keep the cost down, I’d have maybe look at dropping the paints that are used to shade the metals, though you might find that leaves them a bit flat.

These look great, I just ordered some dark angels contrast to try a similar method myself. Curious though why you didn’t do a thin layer of the warp lightning on the marines like you did the dread? I was thinking of doing that on all of them as I feel like it produces a better “natural” highlight that way, and anything I can do to reduce the amount of edge highlighting I have to do the better lol
@Warhipster3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! So I do that final glaze to pull everything together on the Dreadnought and help stop any large flat areas that mightn't have the best coverage from standing out. When I was painting mine I didn't feel like it was needed on the infantry, but you could absolutely do it to your own if you like the feel.

I'm thinking on getting DA Green for the cloacks of a rangers unit, but it seems a really tricky paint. How does it perform on clothes? do you reccomend any other contrast green to mix it and achieve that dark slightly blueish green? thx!

@saurrel84443 жыл бұрын
(i just try your recipe ! it works so good ! Many thanks !! )
@Warhipster3 жыл бұрын
In a way it is better as it introduces some of that Contrast Element by using the contrast paint but Lahmian is just as sufficient at doing the job. You could even use Water! You just need it really thin

I really wanna try this out but I'm worried about having the blocky paint. It seems like just dragging out the paint/keeping it from pooling seems to fix this though?
@Warhipster3 жыл бұрын
I find if you paint towards recesses/the edge of panels with the paint you tend to have fewer issues with it.
@goldfishthedestroyer32333 жыл бұрын
Could I prime black or would that mess up the contrast paints?
@Warhipster3 жыл бұрын
If you're planning on priming black I'd recommend either hitting the models with a zenithal spray in a lighter colour or a zenithal drybrush. Contrast paints rely on a lighter base colour to do their thing and it can get quite lost on a black undercoat.

Are you saying you did warp lightening, dark angels contrast, then 8:1 medium calibran green on all the green models?
@Warhipster3 жыл бұрын
Only where it needs it. The Caliban Green basically acts as a corrective glaze. If the panel is already perfect it doesn’t need it, if it’s blotchy or scratchy or too thin then using the Caliban Green on the panel, not the recess or edge, helps to fix that issue.
@slingshotmaster993 жыл бұрын
@@Warhipster you are MY (dark) Angel. I have been having the absolutely worst experience with this paint and it’s been really, really discouraging with the whole hobby. I will pick up caliban green Tomorrow. What would you say would help with dark angels contrast being too dark? Larger brush?
@Warhipster3 жыл бұрын
Layer Brushes from Citadel are the best in my opinion, the balance is making sure your brush is nice and wet but if you hold it up for 3 seconds if a drip is forming the brushes, that’s too much paint. Similarly, if the brush looks like it’s drying out or like you can see every bristle because it’s all splayed out then that’s not enough paint. Too much paint and it’s dark, not enough and it’s paler and scratchy.
@pho70203 жыл бұрын
what are your thoughts on the contrast dark angels green? compared to just using caliban green. im very new to the hobby and i see mixed opinions on contrast paint so i am not sure what to think, but i really like the outcome you produce with your method. you would consider this more difficult than just using caliban green? or not
@Warhipster3 жыл бұрын
I love it! I think Contrast paints take a bit more getting used to than a regular paint and a lot of people formed their opinions on them when they were first launched and the marketing message was ‘One thick coat’. If you look at the work of people like Juan Hidaglo and those in the ‘Citadel Contrast Painters’ group on Facebook you can see quite what can be achieved with these paints when you take the time to get to know them better.

I just ruined an entire tactical marine squad with Dark Angel green. I can confirm it does take some getting used to. I could honestly cry over how bad it looks but I really do believe in how well the contrast paints can turn out, also because of this video. It just feels like the DA green or any other contrast is so hard to control. Im honestly afraid to use it on any other models now Ive seen the damage it can do if I mess up again.

Bog standard normal Palette as you want to avoid where possible getting any water anywhere near Contrast Paints as it can dilute the effect that Contrast has thus rendering it scratchy and blotchy
