Control BMPCC 6k on DJI RS2

In this video I solve the one problem I had when using the BMPCC 6k on the DJI RS2, thats controlling the camera with the gimbal. If you're recording to an SSD drive on your Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, then you don't have a free usb-c port to use to plug the camera into the gimbal.
In this video I share with you this nifty little CFast to SSD adapter I found so you can free up that usb-c port.

I'm building out a studio for my office with the 6k pro and an RS2 in my cart when I realized the 1 USB C problem. You're the first channel I've seen say anything about it. Because this is for work I might just spend the extra for a Cfast card, but this is probably the best solution I've seen so far!

You answered the exact question I had in regards to a BMPCC 4K or 6K and the DJI DS2 before I considered buying either of them. I mean the BMPCC 4K is pretty much guaranteed to become part of my workflow, and this solution may make it more attractive.

Since you are now using the USB C port to the RS2, you can now ditch the focus motor and just control the focus to the RS2 wheel (AF Lens Capability/Compatibility).

Unreal spot Jared. Literally never thought about the memory storage! I have a Samsung T5 SSD which looks like it will be just for computer storage now. Have you had any issues with the adapter and what SATA drive would you best recommend?

I use a western digital and a Samsung evo. No problems with either. I mean, any internal ssd should be fast enough compared to any cfast card, and those are fast enough for the BMPCC’s.

I'm using Crucial MX500 1TB SSDs, never had any problems with them. Even recording Q0 in 6K works without dropped frames.

Have you testet, if a Samsung 860 Pro can record in all Qualities? 6k50fps RAW 3:1, 5,7k 60fps and so on? Would be nice to know if there are any recording problems when using the best quality with most frames. Thanks

Is it possible to use an USB-C Splitter instead? Can the single USB port serve multiple functions simultaneously? The reviews for the Zitay adapter(s) isn’t very good and a splitter is a lot less expensive. Keeps you from having to buy an additional ssd also. Have you attempted that approach?

The motors will handle the weight no problem, the challenge is balancing the wait, might need som counterweights on the top. Tilta makes a v mount plate the goes below the camera cradle, you could check that out.

@@sportyjen62 no. The weight the motors can handle doesn’t have anything to do with properly balancing your camera on the x,y, and z axis. But yes you’d stress the motor on an axis if you just put your camera on there without balancing it. The rs 2 pro can handle a payload of 10 lb / 4.5kg.

Dude!!!! Why is no one else talking about this? Everyone else just chalks it up to "oh well". So with the usb c port freed can you control the sigma electronically without needing the focus motor? Also I thought the ssd had to be supported by black magic? Or is any 2.5" ssd drive good?

With the usb c port freed up you can plug it into the gimbal and control recording, aperture, and iso. You still need a focus motor for focusing, the camera doesn’t have auto focus really, you could set focus with your phone but that defeats doing everything from the gimbal. I’ve had luck with all the 2.5” I have, they are fast. The camera doesn’t see it as an ssd, it sees it as a cfast since a cfast is what’s plugged into the camera with that adapter.

search for SmallRig Mini V-Mount Battery Plate with Crab-Shaped Clamp. The battery is a IndiPRO Tools Micro-Series V-Mount Li-Ion Battery (98Wh). I use a long d-tap cable so I have plenty of slack.

Good Video! But how could you balance the heavy Sigma lens with this setup? I have the same setup, but it’s not working very well. The Fokus Motor also not working in any Direktion 🙁

I’m able to balance it just fine. A lot of people use this setup. RS2 can handle a lot of weight.

Great video! Quick questions. Can the v mount battery power the RS2 and the camera? Is there an input on the RS2 for a dtap connection? Also, did you mount the v mount battery on your briefcase handle ( I couldn’t really see in the video). I’d much rather try this setup than have to purchase the expensive Tilta pass through plate. There is not d tap connection on the rs2, but most v mount batteries have a d tap and a usb-a on them, so you could get a usb-a cable to usb-c and plug power into the rs2 that way. Yes I mounted the v mount batter on the briefcase handle using a v mount clamp, the one I have is from smallrig. Search Amazon, tons of options from $15-$40.

Did you have to use any extra plates to get the 6k onto the Gimbal? some people are saying you can't balance it without a cage and I'm trying to decide which Gimbal will be the least hassle to pick up. I'm using the 6k with the battery add on and a sigma 18-35 so it's a little bulky

I balance it all the time with no cage. It’s slightly of center, but you can still balance it, the safety lock isn’t engaged though, but you can still lock the plate. It’s a great gimbal for the 6k. I use it everyday.

Is there a specific setting on the camera you had to set in order for it to allow gimbal control? Using a different gimbal (Crane 3S) with the same wiring scheme, USB C to USB C, and it won't recognize the BMPCC 6K v1 even though it's marketed as being compatible.

That’s a gimbal issue. There is no settings in camera to set to make this work.

Great setup... Bought the adaptor but dam! how to you close the SSD slot cover with the cable? I feel like forcing it will break it!

Few options, gaffe tape it shut, take the door off or what I do is have the the cable come out towards the bottom and I’m able to wedge the door tight enough to where it stays shut though not all the way shut. Hope that helps.

Not sure what your talking about mounting under the plate, if you’re just talking about the mounting plate, the plate doesn’t need to slide all the way over to mount the camera.

@@JaredSpink with the BMPCC6K being so wide when I mount mine I can’t put the plate dead center with the lens, I have to off set it otherwise it won’t mount as the camera hits the side of the gimbal, so I can’t use the lens strap because it’s not aligned with the lens

Make sure you’re using the right cable and that you have it plugged into the right port on the gimbal. Try a different cable maybe the one you have is bad.

Trying to decide between the Sony FX3 and the BM 6k pro as a first entry cinema camera. I’m confused about the AF. Does the gimbal somehow provide a solution which allows Autofocus? Thanks!

If you’re not comfortable pulling focus, get the Sony.

@@JaredSpink Yeah, I’d like to learn how to pull focus manually. Feel it will be more expressive. But will be a one man crew for the initial sorts of projects I have in mind. But, just curious if the gimbal or certain lenses allow for AF. Or if there’s some way in which the phone interfaces with the gimbal and focus pulling motor. Seems harder to pull focus while using the gimbal especially?

No not hard to pull focus with the gimbal. BMPCC does not have continuous AF so you either need to pull focus or you can look I tot he raven eye for the rs2. It works with cinema lenses that have have hard stops and not your typical photo lenses that don’t have hard stops I believe. There are also some distance limitations with it as well as framing limitations. So you’ll just have to get use to how it works and adapt if that’s the route you go.
