I did an experiment with my third graders once with different colored plates with petroleum jelly on them. Sure enough, the yellow attracted the most whiteflies. Interestingly, the colors that had yellow in them (green, Orange) also attracted just a few, but the colors with no yellow at all attracted almost none.
@classicrocklover56154 жыл бұрын
My guess about the purpose of the dish washing soap: The jelly just makes the insect stick to the cup, then I guess it would eventually die. Some might struggle and break free. Dish soap works as an insecticide because 1) it coats the insect body and suffocates them or 2) in cases of hard shells, it dissolves a bit of their protection which helps kill them. Either way, Miss Wanda is painting portraits of sunshine at 6:30 am with Dawn. I think it's a sign...

Danny, you can also use worm castings to deter white fly. White flies don't like the taste of worm castings and will go away. Just incorporate a little worm castings around your vegetable plants and white fly and aphids will leave your plants alone. :-)

Danny I have done been down this entire Road we had most of our crops wiped out the last 2 years by whiteflies. I tried everything organic first and then went to pesticides we have spent thousands and thousands of dollars fighting whiteflies we finally found the solution it is a fairly new product called sivanto it is very selective it will not harm beneficial insects like worms and bees and others it only targets harmful insects. Like whiteflies the drawback is this is something new and it still has a new price, 325$ a gallon. But after two years of battling whiteflies it done away with them in seconds. It seems to me to be a great product something we wish they had been making all along instead of the poisonous crap that kills everything. Oh by the way this is David from Old South I changed the channel name to match the Facebook group

Interesting! Also, petroleum jelly comes in useful for so many things...I use it on my pressure canner seal. My father used it long ago to make the tv antenna pole slippery so raccoons wouldn’t climb up the side of the house and get into the attic to lay their young. He laughed to watch them get part way up, only to slide back down again. I can’t get any food from growing outdoors. The possums, raccoons, and squirrels eat everything including some flowers. Even growing things in pots...pots are turned over with ginger gone...from the leaves to the roots. Squirrels here eat the whole fruit...tomatoes, peaches, avocadoes, oranges, mangoes. Not in the country where I could deal with them...suburbia. Even if I could get traps...where can I drop them off? Every wildlife area closed. Thank God for where you are, had planned to sell my home before this lockdown. Guess God wants me here. Am growing indoors under lights. Starting a few things in pots but crazily having to drag them outdoors to water and be in sun all day, then drag them back in the evening. Can’t afford a greenhouse, so will have to just survive.

Great tips! I'm very interested in seeing how the petroleum jelly works! Walter Reeves has several videos on gardening with the Georgia Public Broadcasting channel, who said use the yellow cups applied with the cheapest oil treatment you can find in the automotive section to attract while flies, mealy bugs and common house flies. I used wood surveyor's stakes to put the cups on and used push pins to hold the cups to the stakes in case of high winds. I'm curious to learn if the jelly works as well as the oil treatment as it would be more cost effective; if it doesn't "run" to the ground in 90+ summer heat. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for the video . I am struggling with a white fly infestation. I am for sure going to try your method. I do have yellow paint handy and I do have some old blinds so, I am good to go. I have been trying a dish washing soap spray but with limited success. I have been isolated now for over 6 weeks, live alone and am so thankful I did a bunch of canning last fall. For whatever reason, (and I do believe it was "divine intervention") something told me I had to ramp up my winter storage endeavours. I have always been a bit nervous of pressure canning but after watching you guys and following some of your advice I gave it a go. With my compromised immune system I have been told to stay home and not to go to town even for groceries. A couple of my neighbours have picked up the few perishables I have needed (wanted???) which I could have survived without if necessary . My thanks again to you and Wanda for the encouragement . Take care, stay safe and God Bless you both. Sandie from Ontario Canada.

Then I found some info in one of my books. Ants bring them in your greenhouse. They carry them from overwintered vegetation to the soil. I had ants in my greenhouse beds then. I got rid of the ants and the aphids disappeared. But it took some time. If I get them again I will definitely use this trick till I can rid the ants. Thanks for sharing!
