I saw my neighbors out looking at something intently. I went out and they were killing these black and orange bugs. I got out my phone and looked them up. I ran back outside and said” wait don’t kill anymore of those bugs. They are ladybugs. We got a good laugh and stood around watching these larvae turn into ladybugs. We had thousands of them in our little area. It was awesome.

People: if you can afford it Cover your susceptible plants with light row cover! You can even just cover the broccoli head. Avoid the aphids in the first place because aphids lay LOTS of eggs! When I was studying botany and entomology I had to make an insect collection (where you pin them in place and I.D. them). Well, I had collected an aphid in a glass vial and put the stopper in. The next day when I went to work with it there was a mess of baby aphids in there with her!! Also: check your plants every day and go out with masking tape. Wrap tape, sticky side out, around your hand and press down on any aphids you see. I checked this morning and found one plant (still in the nursery pot) with one stem with aphids. In no time that would have been an infestation. A new aphid becomes a reproducing adult in ONE week!

I had my brassicas covered and got aphids anyway - I figured they had come up from the soil. We don't usually have hard freezes where I live (although I think we did last winter) so I'd really like to know more about how to prevent them.

Am in 9b also never had to deal with aphids, went to Socal for couple weeks and my entire veggie garden was infested, had to destroy entire garden of my favorite veggies. Didn't bring any soil in nor any plants. City water this year has been very salty tasting with a strong smell. None of my neighbors garden so I don't know how aphids found my garden. My home backs up to an elementary school playground and we share a 7ft cinder block fence. I've also noticed new type of moth that looks like hummingbirds but smaller. There are other flying pests & insects I've never seen in any of my gardens or anywhere in Norcal, Socal or Central Valley in my decades of gardening and Ag related activities. I studied agriculture at Fresno State. I've collected several different flying pests but the County Ag dept isn't interested.

Aphids yearly attack our 100-foot Tulip Tree. The sap (honey dew) rains down, carried on the breeze, on the lawn (adversely affects the grass), patio furniture (sticky), and passing people (annoying). A side issue is that the Tulip Tree canopy is too high for spraying or hosing down, but planting sacrificial plants can decoy attract the aphids away. Thank you for your video.

I get aphids every season on brassica crops, especially broccoli and collards. I start spraying before I see any visible infestation and continue to spray until harvest. I spray every day with a soap solution making sure to get the undersides of the leaves. I spray twice a day if I see any visible aphids. They seem to appear just about when the broccoli is starting to form heads. I’m going to try companion planting, a lot easier than having to spray every leaf, nook and cranny!

I usually don’t have aphid problems, but this year I was being frugal and used an open bag of potting soil for starting seeds inside. Big mistake and I should have baked it on our grill for 20 min at 200*F. I also got the terrible gnat and mildew problem. I put vermiculite on top of plants to curb the mildew and drenched soil with a 1 to 4 mix of water and 3% peroxide along with yellow sticky traps and that took care of those two with monitoring. The aphids, sigh, I keep manually removing and Neem oil. They liked basil, marjoram, celery and new to me artichokes. Not detected on rosemary, oregano, geraniums, petunias or onions. To pick them off the artichokes is easy, but the celery? I isolated them so far. If anyone has suggestions for getting rid of aphids inside I’d be glad to hear. I have pre mixed Neem, but concerned about it being too harsh on seedlings. 😂😂I seen a lady bug on the kitchen window and wanted to catch it to put on artichokes and it disappeared. It probably heard what I was going to do with it and got scared😂

Aphids can be a devastating pest. Prevention goes a long way. I always seem to get them on my honeysuckle. Living in the mid-west I will spray neem oil starting in march and usually hit them at least 3 separate times thru march/april. Theres not much more aggravating seeing beautiful flowers form then leaves and flowers curling and distorted just from the aphids. Get the early start and you may get a few or maybe even none.

For application of the DE: How about sucking it into a bellows and then blowing it onto the plants? I also have an old Black Flag powder sprayer like you see in the Tom and Jerry cartoons for applying DDT powder. Gonna try it with both if I get an aphid problem, but my yard is full of scallions, so I've never really noticed them.

Believe it or not, one flew into his ear, and he could hear it, but we could not see it. We went to the ER, they got him into see a doc quickly.
