Apu was beloved by watchers of this show. He is a true liver of the American dream. He came with nothing and is a successful businessman. He is repeatedly shown to be the best person around, and they use his culture to tear down American culture. This character was great, and people who never watched the show, had him removed because a white guy did the voice.

I loved Apu but "best person", remember selling expired milk in the title sequence and that one episode with the hot dog. The one with a band aid attached that made Homer really ill. Now I think about it, well in Springfield thosemaybe the least offense things to happen.

I will never understand why Apu got backlash. He owns his own business, he has a degree from University, he's married, he's raising children, he's a volunteer firefighter, he works a ton of hours..... hes religious..... he's like one of the most accomplished characters in the entire show

Errrr he doesn't own a bussiness, he is just an employee of a chain store. This specifically is a now outdated stereotype of indian americans (The new one is them being underpaid interns on tech related jobs). On the bright side, he has the privilege of being his own manager.

Apu was a much loved neighbor! My sister in law immigrated; and had to go through the citizenship test, after which she knew things about the USA that those of us living here all our lives didn't know. It should't be THAT hard! My ancestors were illiterate. They came here with nothing and started working like crazy. I'm happy for new neighbors who have something special to bring to the block party!!!!

The writers of the Simpsons were ridiculously well educated Harvard graduates and I have to believe that the character was named Apu based on the Satyajit Ray moves with Apu as the main character. I'm just assuming this based on how popular Satyajit Ray was amongst Hollywood directors during the period they would've been in those classes at school. Idk if that's ACTUALLY the case lol, I've just been thinking that😋 Edit: so, I just looked it up and he WAS named after the Satyajit Ray films! Pretty cool😋

It's very difficult for non-Indians to differentiate between Indian accents. Been married 15 years to south Indian and it took me 3 of those years to hear the difference.

Like the others below, I saw nothing but good in Apu. There was nothing at all objectionable about him in any episode I ever watched. Who cares if he was voiced by a white guy? It would be one thing if he were portrayed by a white guy in a negative way, but he never was. Just another manufactured controversy

I am American and I never met an Indian person who was not very polite and kind. It might have been the late Beatle George Harrison that loved Indian music that made me want to learn more. I love the Simpsons and know Apu is a stereotype but I hope people don't think Homer is like the average American. Really enjoy watching your reactions. Thanks you.

I am an American from the State of New York but not New York City. I must admit, i had a little bit of a hard time understanding you guys at the beginning. But you seem like sweet, wholesome people and I'm glad you liked Apu because he was always one of my favorite characters on the Simpsons and I kinda hate that they cancelled him. I get the exact reason why Apu isn't in the show anymore -- Harry Shearer now doesn't think it's right that an Anglo guy like him is voicing an Indian and all of the known name Indian actors in Hollywood don't want to touch him with a 10 foot pole. Still, cast a wider net and have the actor in on his dialogue and that solves the problem in my opinion. But it just reminds me that in public perception, "Fair For Its Day" can still age out of being considered acceptable. _Better_ examples, probably, include Fisher Stevens doing so much research on how to play Benjamin Jahrvi in Short Circuits 1 and 2, but today... there's brownface. I don't need to say more.

Lord Vishnu is the most well known Hindu God at least outside or India. That is why it is always him. Which only increase how well known outside of India he is making the situation a self-feeding cycle. Plus he is one of the three rulers of the pantheon. Plus he interacts with mortals in the myths more then most of the other gods do especially on a somewhat "equal" level thru his avatar. And at least from what I can tell the most well liked and well known gods in most pantheons are ones that most often walk among humans even more so if they protect the people and existence/order.

Since...the Beatles, there's been a huge interest in what can be learned from Indian culture. Many books. But very few people actually learned that much. Still that was now 60 years ago. So many Indian words have now found their way into our language, although perhaps not well defined.

3:30 "Why you guys are always talking about Lord Vishnu". If I am not mistaken, there are many gods in Hinduism. However, most (non-Hindu, obviously) westerners, not actually knowing very much about Hinduism, have only heard of a few of them. The Simpsons was aimed at an American audience. They don't want to name a god and 90% of the white audience goes, "who?" and are distracted from the joke.

Vishnu! as usual , they assume all Indians are Hindi. On the west coast, we have a lot of Sikhs here. I learned a little bit about them. I know they are very patriotic Americans, and a lot of the young men join the military. They are very hard-working, and have a lot of farms in California. They are very welcome as immigrants in America.

Growing up I noticed some of my Indian colleagues kept pronouncing vegetables as "Veje-table" and I said you mean "veg·e·ta·ble" based on his explanation I can understand why is difficult to pronounce correctly but it is such a struggle if they are not raised in the US. I can only imagine it they transition from India >> England >> USA. The reason why Americans use Vishnu mostly is probably because Americans are not very knowledgeable of the Hindu Religion. They only know Vishnu and maybe Shiva. USA is more a monotheistic culture (One God) and Vishnu would be the closest to the Christian form of God being the protector and preserver of the universe. In certain areas Polytheistic Religions can be taboo. Just like every where else, America still has its prejudice problems. So when it comes to Hindu, Greek and Norse origin; etc.) Americans can be a little reluctant to take interest. I love how channels like yours show that humor and laughter can create a common ground between different cultures. Blessings and best wishes to you both!
