Parabens aren't banned in the EU. There are restrictions to use levels and not for use in diaper type applications though. Raw materials that cosmetic chemists use are typically cosmetic grades, not just mineral oil. In the EU, they require "allergens" in fragrances to be listed in labels if it is over a certain amount. So yes, most of components in fragrance are hidden from product labeling. Coconut oils have varying grades too depending on degree of hydrogenation, refining and melt points. Great on hair and body, but agreed could be heavy for facial skin. You would almost need that sulfate based cleanser to emulsify and rinse off :) 2 cents from a formulation chemist

Since 2015, the EU has banned isopropyl- and isobutylparaben in all personal care products, because of the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety declaration that “adequate evidence has not been provided for the safe use of propyl- or butylparaben in cosmetics” (SCCS ). These parabens are also banned in personal care products in 10 Southeast Asian countries, as determined by the intergovernmental Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The use of propyl- and butylparaben is restricted in the EU, ASEAN and Japan "As of April 2014, only Isopropylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Phenylparaben, Benzylparaben, and Pentylparaben have been prohibited in the EU ,due to the lack of data to evaluate the safety of using them. In September 2014, the European Commission followed the opinions of its expert Committee and published a regulation to limit the use of Butylparaben and Propylparaben" "Today it appears that the main toxic potential of parabens comes from their ability to disrupt the endocrine system, particularly in the case of parabens with the longest alkyl chain."

Parabens are not banned in the EU but we've limited their concentration to safe amounts (based on current knowledge obviously, it may change in the future); companies that sell products with the "no parabens" label have been fined in the past because they can't advertise a formulation as not containing a safe ingredient as it unfairly influence consumer decisions and I think that fines here in EU on this should be higher. On the "breast cancer" aspect, several papers has been published since the first one and none of them has found any correlation at the concentration usually approved by regulators (parabens activity was discovered to be 1/10000 of the estradiol) and often paraben replacements are either less safe or less effective. I think that it is time that dermatologists and formulators really fight to change people's perception on parabens and other unjustly denigrated ingredients.

Very good overview Susan! I like how you differentiate statements. Nonetheless, I´d like to add some information on mineral oils, as from a dermatologist´s view there are some aspects we should not underestimate: 1. Very important: mineral oils have no active ingredient character, i.e., they do not integrate into the structure of our epidermis, but form an impermeable layer. If the skin is covered with a kind of foil - which we also call “occlusive effect” - then moisture and heat build up underneath this foil, and the skin no longer cools down enough by evaporation. Longer-term processes of skin renewal are delayed via the impermeable film on the skin . 2. At first, after application the skin may feel soft and pleasant, due to a slightly swelling and smoothing effect. But once the “foil” is removed when you clean your skin, the moisture trapped underneath escapes and, as a result, the skin dries out even more. 3. Blood vessels may expand permanently and thus worsen conditions like couperose or rosacea. 4. Also, as touched on in your video, sebaceous glands may become "clogged" (occlusive effect) by the impermeable “foil”, so that sebum, cornified debris and bacteria accumulate underneath. That promotes enlarged pores, blackheads and pimples. 5. Finally: mineral oils considerably burden the environment.
@azyatar5 жыл бұрын
Susan, the reason bergamot essential oil is usually recommended to be avoided is because of a compound found naturally occurring within it call bergaptene. bergaptene sensitizes the skin and can cause phototoxicity. there are varieties that have been processed to remove the bergaptene and therefore the risk of sensitivity but they are more expensive to procure and do have a slightly different aroma note due to the additional processing and it isn't labeled any differently in ingredient declarations so unless you know the formulator, you'd have no idea which version the brand used.

I think it’s important to look at the current research as well as what highly educated experts in the field say like dermatologists and cosmetic chemists since they will use their education and background to interpret the current research. I think estheticians can be good for general skincare questions but not for more in depth questions or areas that delve into the actual science of skin and skincare. I just don’t believe that a 4-6 month esthetician program makes someone a medical professional or scientist. You’re lacking even the basic science courses that someone will take before going into the medical field. There are of course exceptions and I’ve met some medical estheticians and of course nurse estheticians that I really respect.

What about Vitamin C? Though it's not as controversial as certain other ingredients, there has been a lot of debate regarding its efficacy. The point is natural products have a lot good things to offer and so does the chemical based! So it's always better to balance out and use the best of both the worlds!

I've been researching skincare lately and I noticed most skincare community talk essential oils being used as aromatherapy in skincare. Essential Oils are volatile and some are phytosensitive which could be really bad, however, coming from an organic herbalist standpoint, and from someone that uses herbs and essential oils daily for many uses besides aromatherapy-- essential oils are typically medicinal, herbal extracts that usually have anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antimicrobial properties. I never see skincare personas mentioning the medicinal or herbal characteristics of essential oils. I would never use a phyto or photo sensitive essential oil on my skin, but I find certain ones to be soothing and beneficial to my skin such as Lavender, Rose, Frankincense among others. Most essential oils have amazing medicinal healing properties since they're just derivatives from plants and flowers that usually have beneficial properties.

Is arbutin generally a safe lightening ingredient in skincare? Would it be considered as a milder version of hydroquinone?

Nope, nope,nope. I’m 100% against mineral oil. I’ve never had anything else break me out so immediately and intensely.

Everyone has their own individual triggers. You may break out from an ingredient that most people like, it happens

@@skinsciencebymira Very true. I have a hyper sensitivity to matcha powder as weird as that sounds. It makes my skin burn and go red and inflamed. However for most people matcha is an antioxidant rich, purifying and anti-inflammatory skincare ingredient! I've also been sick on matcha lattes before. Starting to think I'm allergic to it actually which sucks.

Juliette Kratochvil yep it happens! I can’t use propolis in my skincare, it clogs my skin really bad. Doesn’t make it a bad ingredient, it’s a really soothing ingredient for most that imparts a nice glow. Some people can’t use niacinamide even though the research shows that it’s a fantastic multi use ingredient that helps with everything from brightening to signs of skin aging to skin barrier support.

So true, I went off mineral oil back in the 90’s during some Dermalogica training - they basically told us it was the devil to skin, but actually nowadays it’s one of the few things that genuinely seems to keep my skin soft & supple - everyone is different, I’ve heard of a lot of people having terrible breakouts from coconut oil too.
@skinsciencebymira5 жыл бұрын
Borntoresist Dermalogica seems to really push that all affordable products are crap but meanwhile they have a lot of irritants in their products interestingly enough. And agreed, everyone is different. I tend to avoid mineral oil in leave on products because I’m more clog prone but it’s an excellent ingredient in say a cleansing oil because it has enough slip and thickness that it’s perfect for gentle massage. Mineral oil can also be better tolerated than plant oils for sensitive skin because it always has the same profile where natural ingredients can vary by batch. Coconut oil is too heavy for my face too but has research that shows its benefit for the hair since its one of the few oils that actually penetrates the hair shift and it’s been shown to really help retain hydration when applied to the body.

I've struggled with back acne for a long time. A while ago I used a showergel that I had laying in my cabinet for like a year 😂 but never used. On the package it says it doesn't contain mineral oil. I've used it for a few weeks now and my back acne is fading quickly! No mineral oil in showergel for me anymore.

I have curly hair and silicones and sulfates are not good for our hair. silicones are like a plastic coating that is not water soluable and it’s hard to rinse them out. It helps to make the hair look shined and healthy but really it’s a plastic coating over your hair and you have to wash it out with a sulfate shampoo to rinse it out. This is the information that I know from experience and I was curious that the same silicones in certain conditioners that I used to use were in my skin care products that I used to use. This is really helpful.

Even some of the experts don't seem to realize that coconut oil is extracted from coconuts. If it's "formulated" or contains "ingredients," it's not coconut oil. It can, however, be processed differently, or more likely, put into formulas with other things that are different.

I've used coconut oil on my hair as a hair mask weekly but I've heard that it can exacerbate dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis (which I suffer from also behind my ears) as the natural yeast on the scalp and other oily areas like behind your ears can feed off the oil making it worse. I was surprised to hear Dr. Desai recommend it to her patients for dandruff. Could you clarify please Susan as another dermatologist on youtube said that it isn't good for dandruff? Thanks.

I’m with you Susan, coconut oil is a no no for my acne prone oily skin. Much prefer cleansing balms anyway, they rinse cleaner compared to coconut oil. But if I had to choose between coconut oil and a makeup wipe I’d take the oil! Those wipes burn!

When it comes to parabens, I'm actually allergic to it as it causes chemical burns. I'm also allergic to oxybenzone (sunscreen) as well. So I tend to not use make up any more and I'm always looking at sunscreens very carefully!
