I was pleasantly surprised by the number of Alabama fans online who understood why Alabama did not make the playoff this year. Yes, the format should be tweaked. It doesn't make sense for two lower ranked conference champions to get a bye in the first round, but that was the agreement for this year. But I am not enthusiastic about the B1G and SEC being guaranteed 4 teams each. That would take up 2/3 of the 12 open spots. Even 3 teams each would take up 50% of the openings. I like that the lesser conferences are guaranteed a couple of spots to make the playoffs more inclusive; but other than that, I'd like to see the open spots go to the best of the remaining teams.
@MattBuild44 күн бұрын
I mean as long as they are consistent in the logic and not that you are changing the format to favor a particular narrative. For example - the amount of hate directed at Boise is so funny to me. How could you possibly ever put a lower ranked team in a bye position over teams that outrank them? Oh idk how about we go back and look at the 19 P5 teams over 15 seasons that Boise State outranked, but got auto-bids into the NY6 and BCS over them....... The level of outrage on this, meanwhile in 2010 #6 Boise State didnt even make a bowl game because an UNRANKED P5 champion got an auto-bid over them....... The hypocritical takes and irony are palpable.
@johntucker59944 күн бұрын
@ Hi Matt, I haven’t followed Boise State over time so I am ignorant of their particular situation. But I was on balance happy with how things turned out this year. I had never watched a Boise State or SMU game until this year. I’d call that a success in increasing fan interest across the board, and the ratings for all media are up. I am well aware how western teams and schools in less elite conferences can often be dismissed or disregarded re bowl and now playoff selection, which is why a couple or three spots should be guaranteed. The B1G and SEC are elite and don’t need the help IMO.

@simpleysims4 күн бұрын
I agree. I think the SEC is fine with 8 conference games. Cuz most of those teams play a noncon rival like Florida when they have to play Miami and/or FSU in the same year along with 8 other conf games. If they played 9 like everyone else, then they'd potentially have to play 11 power4 teams out of their 12 games. That wouldn't be fair to them. Instead, I think every other conference should go down to 8 games, include a rival like Florida does and then play Mercer in week 11 like Alabama does year in and year out lol. Because thats been my issue with the SEC is when these non-con games are scheduled. If you're going to play Sister's of the Poor in week 11, then we'll also play [insert FCS team here] in week 11.
@MuhGlassRibs4 күн бұрын
@simpleysims those are just 3 teams. fsu/uf, ga/gatech and clemson/sc. even kentucky doesnt play Louisville every year. that's 3 teams out of 16. but for a 16 team conference, playing 8 conf games is ludicrous.

LSU instead of Rutgers for instance. Our 2025 schedule is so trash lol

The winners will be Conference Champions and ranked #1 - #4 by CFP Committee according to existing guidelines. *Semi Final Playoff #1 vs #4 *Semi Final Playoff #2 vs #3 *The losers will be ranked #3 & #4 by CFP Committee according to existing guidelines. * The winners will be ranked #1 & #2 by CFP Committee according to existing guidelines. *The CFP Super-Duper Bowl #1 vs #2, the winner is National Champions. *The Notre Dame dilemma of being an Independent solution, should they continue to want to stay Independent. UND should agree to play 3 games from each of the power conferences and to continue with their commitment to play Navy every year giving them a 13-game season as the other CFP teams. Notre Dame would have to be ranked above one of the conference teams that is the lowest ranked #2 to be selected to the 8 team CFP. #1. Alabama has nothing to complain about missing the CFP after losses to unranked Vanderbilt and OK, so shut up AL, you are the FSU team this year! #2. Miami lost to an unranked Syracuse & GA Tech, so no way Jose! No way in the world should Boise State be in the top 4, they have played no one in the top 25, but Oregon and lost. Weakest schedule out of all the CFP teams. And how did BSU jump over ASU when ASU had a huge blowout in their conference championship game? Since Clemson won SMU for the ACC Championship, I have Clemson #11 an SMU #12. How in the far world of rankings does Clemson not get ranked above SMU after winning them in the ACC Championship, this has got to be a mistake. Everyone was complaining about the 4-team playoff and the mess it created, now it's even worse with people making these ranking doing stupid stuff. The only way to deal with this is get rid of the scheduling on teams outside the power 4 conferences and anyone on the outside of the power 4 conferences don't play in the CFP primarily because of a totally weak schedule! Then have only and 8 team CFP with conference champions in the top 4 and the runner ups ranked in 5-8. We need to discuss how the committee is selected!

What “works” is seeing great matchups. A playoff, by design, limits the meaningful matchups. Let’s start with the observation that 5 vs 12 will NEVER be interesting because what it sets up is a much larger, faster, more complete team against a smaller, slower, less complete team. Fine. But maybe, maybe, maybe baby, #12 actually has something going - like a big team that lost a few early games before maturing by the end of the season. This year maybe South Carolina could fit that description. Ok, so if 5 vs 12 and 6 vs 11 are such a bad idea, what alternative do we have? A play-in format. Start on Week 1 with the Bottom 4 (9 v 12, 10 v 11). Week 2, Winners advance to play 7, 8. Week 3 - Quarterfinals we now have 8 teams - 2 teams survive out of 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 - teams 1-6 have all had 2 weeks off - now we have an 8 team setup - assign matchups strictly by rankings (1 vs lowest survivor from Week 2, 2 vs second lowest survivor, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5) - two of these games are likely lopsided, but 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 should be competitive) - none of these teams should be “unwatchably bad” thanks to play-in Week 4: semi-finals - matchups based strictly on ranking survivors: highest winner vs lowest winner, 2nd highest winner vs 2nd lowest winner - both of these games should be solid because all possible trash teams have been weeded out Week 5: Championship game - This should be a great matchup between 2 big, fast, very talented, complete teams - There is no “easy path” to get to this game thanks to weekly selection of surviving opponents This Would Give Us: - More competitive games. - Limited opportunities for weasel teams. - A 2 week bye for upper tier teams. - A championship game that football fans would love to see. Give us games… but make more games interesting!

Difficult to get in needs to mean the same. It's easy for lower level teams. And the competition at the playoff level is lopsided. That's kinda the point. You're not talking down to 3 losses. It's literally the first year in a playoff, so of course there's precedent. Case and point, Clemson. Who literally just loss to an in state rival in Clemson a week before SMU and somehow got in, in a easier conference with 3 losses. Then you have the Boises of the world.

Oh im sorry - remind me again what SEC team played 3 P5 conference champions on the road in the last 4 years? Cuz little Boise State did that. But tell me more about how Boise doesnt play anyone...... In reality the last 25 years Boise State has scheduled the MOST ranked teams in OOC in the nation. They have played 32 final ranked teams, 14 Conference Runner ups/Division Champions and 10 P5 conference champions. This aint the team to be questioning schedule on. They want the smoke anywhere, anytime, anyone - and theyre really the only team in the nation that does this. Next year they got Notre Dame on the road and the year after they have Oregon on the road again - name a single other team scheduling like this? So then your argument against Boise becomes - oh you play in the MWC. Guess whose fault that is? Cuz its pretty silly to reject Boise State 13 times (7 by the PAC, 3 by the B12, 2 by the ACC and 1 by the B10) and then turn around and penalize them for not playing in these conferences......

@@SS11660 Problems with college football that make picking the "12 best teams" impossible. 1. Selective bias of programs 2. Selective bias of what constitutes a good program 3. Belief in conference superiority 4. Historical formation of conferences having nothing to do with competition 5. Historical selection of teams for post season being inconsistent, illogical and/or corrupt Like Alabama is considered one of the best programs. They claim this because of wins and # of titles. They also record wins going back to 1889 when none of the conferences even existed. They also claim a whole bunch of championships that are arguably complete nonsense (aka seasons they didnt win the SEC, seasons they werent #1 by most polls, seasons they literally lost to teams who claim a title, seasons they literally lost the championship game). A lot of programs do this, and then over the last 50 years these same programs create rules for the rest of the teams that put favor against them. For example a program like SMU has been playing since the 1900s, but they are restricted in claiming wins pre 1950 for some reason. SMU also has 5 seasons polls ranked them #1, but they are persuaded to not claim these. This is a complete double standard that incentivizes greater favor for particular brands even though historically as a whole it makes zero sense. Like Boise State is considered inferior because theyre G5. If they were able to include all time wins they would have the 40th most wins in the entire league and as many to date as Stanford. That means they would have more wins than 18 P5 programs. So why is a team still in the G5 if they have been more successful all time than nearly 25% of the P5? And how do you claim the P5 is truly superior if you dont select teams into the P5 based on competitive ability?

@@A-Aron5151 I think you would be surprised how Boise State did in the SEC. For one, this is their roster making $2M a year - in the SEC that explodes for $50M a year. Second while there are a lot of good teams in the SEC, theres a lot of garbage in the conference too - historically Boise State has played the top end of the SEC and is 2-5 all time. So are they going to win the SEC? No, but they can be a mid to upper competitor. T hird the SEC has never played in Boise, beating Boise in Boise is very difficult to do. That stadium holds the all time consecutive home win record in the league and in the last 25 years, BSU has lost just 18 total games at home. If They play an SEC schedule at least 4 of those in-conference games will be in that stadium.
@MattBuild43 күн бұрын
@@A-Aron5151 Boise State is likely the single most reason why the G5 gets a seed in the CFP as well as why a super league will not happen. During the BCS era there were a couple of extremely serious lawsuits against the league by a group of G5 teams. These lawsuits were not some PR show like what FSU did. They were civil, state and most importantly federal lawsuits on corruption, fraud and anti-trust. Boise State is the last remaining G5 team that was involved heavily in both. Most importantly is that the 2009-2012 G5 lawsuits made by the US DOJ and US Senate against the BCS and NCAA were never outright disbanded - they basically got put on hold when the CFP was announced. So if the CFP took action to prevent a program like Boise to make the playoffs at all and use the G5 argument in any way, Boise would have legal precedent and existing legal evidence to show decades of corruption against their program in previous lawsuits. Really no other program has a weapon like this. No Boise doesnt really talk about doing this openly, because these actions were taken as a last resort method (the NCAA sanctioned them and other G5 programs involved in these lawsuits as payback in 2013-2016).
