You heard Kandel-he said it himself. There hasn’t been any noticeable improvement in the medical treatment of mental illness in the last 60 years. This makes it important to rethink how we approach mental illness. Maybe it’s not just a biological problem but also a social one. And maybe it’s our society that needs to change its structures to address this. Take, for example, the over-representation of minority groups in mental institutions. These groups aren’t predisposed to mental illness because of their race. This trend is seen worldwide and points to broader systemic issues that need to be addressed.
