Professor Loury is such an admirable human being. The fact that he is extremely knowledgeable, yet he transparently wrestles with these complex ideas instead of coming to quick conclusions like so many of our commentators in the world today is humbling. Whether on societal issues, problems facing academia, or even his own personal bout with the faith, He openly and honestly shows what true intelligence does when faced with complex issues....it wrestles. He is indeed an intellect in pure form, and young people everywhere should glean as much as we can from men like him. Having listened to this excellent conversation (and his appearance on Joe Rogan’s show), I am more than a little ashamed to admit that for years I have judged the proverbial book that is Cornel West by the cover without actually taking the time to listen to him more clearly. Like Glenn, I suspect that there is still much that he and I would disagree with, but as some other commenters have mentioned, his worldview does seem to come from a place of love which I think can be starkly contrasted with many of the prominent “thinkers” that are so prevalent today. Both he and Glenn are demonstrating exactly what our country and world need. They aren’t lecturing (or worse hectoring) one another. Rather, they are challenging, discussing, learning, growing. Thanks to all for having the courage to participate in this conversation (most of which admittedly went way over my head!).

I agree with you. I am listening to them discuss the poor. I am wondering if Mr. West heard Mr. Sowell's research on poverty. His research indicated that married AA had a similar poverty rate to other communities. Single AA had higher poverty rates than other communities. I take that to indicate that being poor is not so much a political problem as it a social problem on micro level, meaning the family has a great deal of outcome when it comes to poverty. Just a thought.
@thomaasfist64942 жыл бұрын
@@parentsarevips Dr.West is looking at that single parenting vs married parenting issue and saying we need to look at the history of white supremacy and the institutional relationship that influences the outcomes of black Americans. He is not denying the individuals ability to effect their own outcomes but if we ignore the pressures that influence those outcomes greatly than we can not fix those institutional issues to make a more equitable world for all people.

I just want to comment on how gloriously data dense this is for anyone who may have felt like the conversation went too fast - utilize the pause button, rewind if you need to - Mr. Cornel West really did come through with a beautiful standing point at the end of a deep, respectful and most importantly functional process of true dialectic. Seriously useful "Steel Man" material. I absolutely love the 5 day work week advocacy point. It's clear everyone had fun, and I'm positive most listeners did as well. The hard part is going to be conveying this message to faux-intellectuals wherever we can, by strictly avoiding Straw Man fallacies and choosing dialectic without compromise. Regards

@Brandon May I like both Glenn and Cornel. However, most of the comments seem to be celebrating the wisdom of Glenn while mocking that of Cornel. I, therefore, sense a bias against Cornel, hence most of the viewers of the Glenn show are diehard fans of him. There is a blind spot that I'm detecting. Regarding the bit where Glenn admits his "cover story" and his guests respond. Time and mortality are doing their work and it is a beautiful blend of humility and perseverance to witness. The concept of the struggle of birth, to be 'born again' may be what we are witnessing. It is humbling to witness. I pray that it is so. I sit here as one among many, I know. A single candle in a sea of lights shining in the darkness, bright and still in devotion one moment, waving and flickering in response to the buffets and blows against it the next. We are the throng who love and pray for our prodigals.

More than anything what struck me was listening to two people who for all the fact they come from very different points on the political spectrum are both underpinned by that most maligned and sneered at in the modern context of ethical positions, namely humanism. It was wonderful to hear them defend the outlook from their own perspective, in such articulate terms.

I love Glenn, so brilliant and though I'm conservative I love Cornel West and his thoughts, it's always good to see a different perspective. I grew up a 3rd generation Seventh-Day Adventist and I can tell you that religion does leave scars. Most judgmental "religions" do. I'm only now opening myself to Jesus and his teaching after a twenty year "sabbatical" and have come to the conclusion that human beings need faith/belief because if we don't we'll begin to worship man and governments, party's, become fanatical with secular "faiths" which appear to have no room for forgiveness or love in their philosophies.

LOVE Cornel West. So glad this meeting of two mutaully respected titans could happen. For those hating on Dr West, I implore you to actually put your Anti Woke pom poms down and listen to him. He is not Michael Eric Dyson, and he's not even Woke per se. He's an independent thinker, who is an advocate for black people. That is NOT Woke. He is actually very refreshing, considerate, reflective and articulate and we need more of that. Don't buy these comments that treat him like a verbose Ta Nahisi Coates. He is NOT.

Agreed, in fact Coates left twitter due to a disagreement with West. For West Coates made White Supremacy into such a powerful mystical force that it would be pointless to resist. West found it harder to engage activism as a kind of self righteous nihilism had taken hold of many, in part due to Coates writing. Coates disliked the correction-but instead of addressing it, and changing course, kept milking the guilt of one group and the resentment of another.

@Bob Charles Glenn Loury flirts with the idea that there may be a biological explanation for black delinquency. He says we at least have to entertain that scientifically. Now the entire Nazi regime stems from that French theory. Hegel may be the "core seed" of wokeism but i dont believe wokeism takes any of their founding tenants seriously. They take everything and turn it into cheap garbage. So simply by citing Hegel or even Marx isnt enough to disqualify Cornel. And apparently Glenn entertaining a Eugenics style causal factor isnt enough for him to be disqualified in your eyes, so spare me. Your disqualifying of Cornel West on the grounds that he sees some good points made by either Hegel or Marx is the same rah rah rah closed mindedness that we accuse the woke Left of. Youre no different. Not driven by intellectual curiosity, youre just a cheerleader for a different team.
@MrAhuraMazda3 жыл бұрын
@Bob Charles btw the same arguments can be made for every single Republican who champions Libertarian Austrian School of Economics principles. Libertarianism and its founders, if listened to in their totality would be a nightmare on par with the worst of Marxism with massive oligarch monopolies owning everything and dumping toxic waste into the water supply they also own. But again, do we silence Ron Paul cause he says we need more Libertarianism or cites the Austrian School? No we dont. Even if Dr West cites Marx ad nauseum, that still doesn't make him woke or unlistenable if what he actually says on its merits seems decent and helpful. Im capable of doing more than saying "oooh he cites Marx, im not listening." You probably havent even read Hegel or Marx lets be honest. I can promise you, Nietzsche is 100 times darker and people cite him all the time

@@MrAhuraMazda Well said. "Marxist" as a dismissive epithet is par for the course in the US. Reductive, reactionary labelling. Every serious scholar, intellectually curious person, person with a basic understanding of economics recognizes Marx and his critique of capitalism as indispensable to understanding the modern world. It does not necessarily mean one embraces his solutions. But "Cultural Marxist", a right wing bugaboo, plays well in the soundbite environment and the reactionary echo chambers.

There are sectors of society that don't have ability to understand the complexity and nuance of true lefties and that at the end of the day we are just as torn but have the best interests of everyone in mind.

Honorable Glenn. Your struggle with your faith comes out so clearly in your conversations. My prayer is for you to see how the Christians in your past and in your wife’s past has no bearing on your walk with the Lord. If Peter and the apostles had been your focus why would you follow the Divine? No brother, Jesus is your only example of love, and faith and service. Simplistically, your teachings on racism compel your black family to look forward. So much of your faith struggle is represented by exactly what you teach your followers on many fronts. You are the one sheep the Lord pursues as He leaves the other 99. Struggle well brother. He will never leave YOU or forsake YOU.
