I love this conversation so much. It makes me feel safer and more relaxed just being in the world, knowing these two people are also in the world and several steps ahead of me with the big picture, and more secure in that knowledge (it seems to me, at least). This is absolutely brilliant.Lila Abu-Lughod's introduction was terrific and Judith Butler and Cornel West do a fantastic job in honouring Said and rightfully not deifying him, as Said was always open to criticism. I have seen this talk 3 times now and all I can is that hopefully I will be able to attend both of their lecture's in person one day.

Judith Butler has been influenced quite strongly by Foucault. Traditions, history, language and heritages that she talks about come from an idea that humans are created/formed through power structures that are in many ways not entirely visible in the way they work. The two books that I can mention when she says that "we are formed in history, we are formed in language" are Foucault's 'The Archaeology of Knowledge' and 'History of Sexuality'. Examples of Traditions and heritages are somewhat addressed but they mostly cover the theory of how a 'human' is 'created'. P.S If this is what you were looking for I would recommend Nikolas Rose's 'Governing the Soul: The Shaping of the private Self' as well.
