A short film by Preston McLanahan interviewing Paul Rand, the great American Modernist designer. Filmed in 1996, shortly before his death he talks about his process, art, aesthetics, and design in general. A very inspirational video and soon to be released on DVD.

The title is "Conversations with Paul Rand" and runs about 30 minutes. It's a full interview with him in his home and at school with students. Very awesome video.

I agree. On another note... I find it humorous how the average business is constantly reinventing themselves. Logos and all. Trying to front as if "To cool to care" but really terrified of being left behind and no real clarity on what they are (as a company). This probably doesn't even make sense... but I was so bewildered when I saw the New Ups logo. Why would you get rid of an amazing logo of a parcel and replace it with a sheild?

True, his work is simple, but it's not about production times, it's about the idea. And if his words were "easily devised through ones own cognitive ability", why has no one else written or commented on design and art this way? I have to disagree, but everyone's a designer with an opinion these days.

"...soon to be released on DVD." What is the DVD called? Is the DVD all about Paul Rand? I'm guessing the video is much longer?

I love and respect Paul Rand and his work, but when he says Rockwell has "no form" he's dead wrong. The formal composition of some of Rockwells compositions are as sophisticated as the old masters. Rand has a point though, if he means that in Rockwell's painting the content dominates. Rand is a little bit jealous because he couldn't render and manner as well as Rockwell.
