I used this video as a guide to be able to travel across Europe and do some regular/stealth camping with my girlfriend on my 2019 Peugeot 208. I cut some MDF board to fit the exact dimensions of the boot of my car and be able to fold it back up quickly in case we needed to leave in a hurry, on top of using a cheap inflatable mattress with a foot pump and I still had leftover space for a butane gas cooker and a carry-on case for clothing. We traveled several weeks through many places across Spain and France, up and down the coast of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, visiting friends and Family with nothing but my car and what we could pack in it and we did not spend a single cent on accommodation. When we couldn't spend the night at some of our friend's or families' place we just parked in a secluded spot where we wouldn't be disturbed and the experience was not bad at all. We also went to some camping grounds with our friends and while they set up their tents we just secured some tarp to the open boot of the car as to shield us from rain or wind and camped comfortably throughout the weekend. Of course, it's no substitute for a Hotel or a camper-van but it will do if all you have is a subcompact car and a bit of ingenuity. My advise for people wanting to travel like this is to SAVE MONEY IN ADVANCE. You never know when need might arise that you need money for the hospital, food, clothing, supplies, etc. Life brings unexpected things around and you need to be prepared. We're not rich and had to put aside money for a year just to do this, so keep that in mind. In any case, this amazing video showed me the possibilities of being creative with space and to use what was available to me so that no matter what I could always do things if I put a little thought into it and some elbow grease. Greetings from Spain and cheers for this incredible video ;)

My biggest question with these vanlife/nomad road life styles is what do people genuinely do when they get violently sick? I'm talking both ends. I genuinely want to try this out myself, maybe no longer than a month or two, but what happens when you get caught out and can't just roll up in bed and run to the toilet every two seconds?
Safety?? Really? No one is concerned??? Is everyone really that equipped to handle any situation when parked in a secluded place??? Water??? Car battery dies or breaks down. Adventure, yeah why not for a day or two. For months? I am not confident 🎉😢

Best subcompact suv for car camping is the honda hrv (except 2023 model) with magic seats. I have 2016 honda hrv lx fwd. The seats fold almost completely flat. I use 3" foam to make the bed completely flat and comfortable to sleep on. For storage, I've added a Thule cargo carrier on the roof of the hrv with Thule roof rack. My wife and I have been car camping for over 10 years and it has saved us a significant amount of money. I really like your video and how practical your setup is. Keep up the good work.

Its only an inch or so higher and then I have a second sheet of wood (same size) that slides out towards the front. Nice! I have an even smaller camper lol;) Mine is 12 Year old Fiat Panda 1.1. Unlike you I have removed the back seats (with the permission of my insurance company) fitted OSB board with brackets where the seat was mounted to hold it. And a lift out panel covering the boot area. All the underside is covered with foil insulation. I made a folding "head board" so when I moved the front passenger seat forward and tilt it I have a flat bed with an adjustable headrest. Tools etc go under passenger front seat, gas stove under driving seat. My electrics (USB for charging and LED lights CCTV cameras etc) is a large standard 12v van battery sitting in passenger foot area connected to my auxiliary power sockets,so no need to use the cars battery. I have window black out film on the rear plus bubble foil barrier I made for all windows.. really helps with condensation! Wind deflectors rear so I can get venting etc in the wet. Folding toilet that doubles as a table for the evening.. I could go on.. fitted carpets.. nice rug.. inflatable mats and an amazing sleep bag.:) Been nice and warm even with ice snow outside..

Sounds so cool. It seems like you have a permanent micro camper setup for now. I tried to rotate the front seat and face it backward. So, I could use it as a dining seat (like swivel seat). Unfortunately the screws are not in square pattern. So had to fix it back to original state. So far, I enjoy seating outside to eat or drink. That's the whole point of being outdoor. Even when laying down and watching movies inside the car, I still keep the boot door fully open. The only time I close is the night time.

I've slept in a Yaris 1, which is a fair bit smaller than a Fiesta. I left the back seat up, reclined the passenger front as far as it would go and put a box with a foam pad in the foot well. That doesn't give a level bed but it's close enough not to be too uncomfortable and might be the only option for a small car (short of taking out all the passenger seats).
@TeddyAndMaddy15 күн бұрын
I took out the back part of my back seats to add extra headspace when back there and storage when I eventually moved cross country. The part you sit on is still there for extra comfort when I drive my dog around, and because it sits very level with the lower area of the trunk. We mostly slept in a tent, but the car was plenty comfy for my pup and I for nights we got to a camp spot late or stealth camped in a parking lot

Anything is better than sleeping in a tent! I occasionally go camping in my 2005 Pontiac Vibe. The great thing about it is that when the rear seats are folded down, the back of the seats and cargo area are perfectly level. I think this feature should be required by law for all hatchbacks! Sadly, my Vibe is getting worn out. And it seems to be impossible to find another one that does not have a huge number of miles on it. Awesome vehicle!

Hmm, no. I can stand in my tent, sleep in a cot, have my 2 dogs (35 and 70 lbs) I can walk and move freely in it specially if is raining, sit down to read in my camping chair and even make coffee on my small table I’m not cramped crouched down for the duration of the storm or if I just want to be inside, I have a Gazelle T4, takes 2 minutes to pitch. But hey, we all are different and the main thing is to get out there and enjoy life whichever is your preference. I’m a retired woman that camps mostly solo very often, in fact I just got back from Yosemite, rained on and off for 1-1/2 days and was very comfortable with plenty of space completely dry.

Very neat. I have a 2017 Honda Fit. I haven't yet slept in it but could easily do so. Since the backseats are rarely used, I keep them folded down. Part of my job is installing APUs on semis, and for Freightliner installs we have to cut out a large section of the padded floor for the evaporator under the bunk. I just keep two of those pieces on the floor of my car. They are very durable and provide a good padded base for sleeping if the need arises. In case of emergency, I keep a sleeping bag in the car.

It allowed me to carry bulky stuff that otherwise wouldn’t fit. My Golf has weird fold down back seats. I haven’t really figured out what I can accomplish. This video gives me some great ideas. ❤️🐈⬛😎 Now if I could just find a good VW mechanic (not a dealer) to go over the whole car, I’d be on the road. It’s an old Golf and needs a top to bottom checkup so I don’t have issues on the road. BTW, I’d probably get one of those hatchback tents to give me more room when camping.

Very nice--but the operative question is how much trouble it was to find plastic tubs of exactly the right dimensions to fit in the back seat floor space *and* come up to just the correct height to extend the sleeping space. There was also time involved in making the wooden extension. Still, a very cool setup IAC.

Thanks, the wooden piece is from IKEA. It's a tabletop without modification. The small box supports the big one. The big one on top is also secured by the front seat pressure. It doesn't have to be the perfect size. Can always be adjusted based on the car model. They're making many types of these boxes these days that come in different sizes. So it should be easy to find a good size.

Great video. I think I will use this when I get a car. Work long hours, and long travel time. many places are to noisy for some shut-eye and really no need to going camping or hitting up a hotel or such. waste of money in my view. Great for when I travel alone.

I have a Hyundai i10 , you need to take-out the passenger seat at front to make it work for sleeping , unless you're under 4' 6"
