I did this for a while (about a year) to save money. moved into my midsized truck. Used a gym membership to take showers. It was a little easier for me, being a guy. a little concerned about your safety. I fended off a couple of "animals" trying to break into my truck a few times with a ah'em.. protective device. Thank God I never had to actually use it. Could tell a few more stories.. Once transitioning back to a normal living situation, had a hard time sleeping at first. was so used to the truck. Another thing to deal with was laundry and keeping my living situation private from my employer. was afraid it would not look good professionally. I know this post is a little older now. Hope you are doing well and staying safe. God bless you ❤

Im 6’3’’ so i ended up sleeping vertically as well. I remember my classmates making fun of me as they started pulling into school in the morning and seeing my living situation. I felt like living in your car put you into this forsaken corner of society. Just today, my family and I got back from the Smoky Mountains in east Tennessee, and while I'm not a fan of cold weather, it was a good trip. While there, we got to see a wild black bear. If you've never been to the Smoky Mountains, you should go. It has a lot of beautiful scenery with lots of trails, creeks, streams, and small waterfalls. Just make sure your brakes are in good shape! I bought 4 sets of black standard window shades/coverings from Walmart for all the windows at night. They pop open and close up quite small. I had black throw blankets and dark colored sheets so everything would look dark and be covered when someone looked into the car during the day. I did add a roof top rack and a rooftop box for more storage, a kayak and my bicycle. It really was my mini-RV!!! Good job sharing budget and compact vehicle living!

0:41 "was able to sleep vertically" What? Neat tour. I live out of my 2017 Toyota Yaris during the warm/hot months, just moved inside a couple days ago because it was getting costly to stay warm all day. Been doing it for the last 3 or 4 years now, I kind of lost track. If I had known I was going to enjoy the road/van life so much, I would have invested in a much bigger car - I'm 6ft and the best place to get sleep in my car is sleeping in the reclined drivers seat with some fleece blankets below to soften it up (if I'm lucky to find an incline, it's a lot more comfortable). I have SO much gear/stuff in my car/trunk/cargo container - I'm prepared for most things, and I can handle overnight temps as low as -10c, but extended extreme cold is a no-go for me though. Here's a few things you might consider: A cargo container to store some things - I keep my sleeping/camping gear up there and there's still plenty of room left - I often top it up with firewood. It leaves my car with a whole lot more room. A (passenger) seat organizer that hangs from the headrest - SO SO handy. Keeps all my small electronics (and more) organized and right beside me, I have another in the back seat for less important things. They are specially handy for when you have to brake unexpectedly - keeps all your stuff from sliding off the seat. You might consider putting your Yeti cooler on the floor in front of the seat and having more than just snacks to your right though it looks like it may not fit just right. Some rubber dashboard mats - store a few things on your dashboard (but be wary of that summer heat and thieves). With some brown packing tape, thin-pressed cardboard, and some fine measuring/cutting, I made custom storage areas (behind the seats, the trunk, on the passenger seat). I also made windshield and back window cover to block out the light. (You can get some really nice FREE pressed cardboard from the TP skids at Walmart, they use thin cardboard sheets to separate the layers of TP - you can usually grab it and walk out without anyone asking questions). A car booster/an emergency tire repair kit/an air pump is good to have on hand. I secure an extra key outside my car so I don't have to break my window (again). :P Fabric window covers from Amazon - roughly $15-20 for a set of 4. It's the single best thing that improves my sleep quality - I hate trying to sleep with a streetlight overhead or waking up to sunlight shooting me directly in the eyeballs. Similar to how you used cardboard, I initially used custom-shaped black construction paper to cover all the windows at night - it was cheap to make ($1/window), lightweight, black on both sides and I especially liked how I could roll them all up together and toss an elastic on it to keep them all contained. I bordered them with packaging tape to prevent tearing. ALSO: Not sure what kind of music you're into... but here's a few I've been digging a lot lately - Artists: Bush, Chevelle, Like A Storm, Nothing More, Saint Asonia. Tracks: 10 Years - The Optimist, Badflower - Jester, Falling Apart - Zebrahead, Blindside - Pitiful

I'd have enough room behind the drivers seat to the rear which is an area about 12" wide and 4 feet 8 inches long for storage of a food chest, folding sterno stove, water, etc. clothes would go below the floor because the Soul is front wheel drive thus the floor is flat. It has a 1000 pound load capacity so that vehicle would work. The Soul has 3 side windows but I'd keep the 2 in the rear covered on both sides because I drive by mirrors that way I only have to cover 4 windows each eve.

9:20 I recommend A1+ sunshades ... 10:10 Oh, you already have one (or similar). Mine keep out streetlight light at night. I have several to cover all the windows and even use them when I'm out of the car so that thieves can't determine if I'm still in my car or not. If you get them, be careful of their erroneous size chart. Medium has functioned best in a medium sedan.

When I was a teenager and on a road trip with my Mom, I brought the tape of Led Zeppelin's 'Presence' album. You brought back memories of when I was in college. I removed the vertical part of the back seat of a rusty beat up 4 door 1967 Nova and removed the braces that ran vertically. This opened up the space into the trunk. I was able to put in a full size mattress into the back seat. This was my sleeping quarters. I lived in it for 2 years while attending college. I was able to use the gym at the college and shower there. My college parking pass was as good as gold. I blacked out my windows in the back and seldom drove the vehicle more than to occasionally move it to avoid suspicion.

@@ukulelebutterfly - I agree, and also am being forced into this. I actually tried a version of this about 20 years ago. I put everything in storage, gave up my appartment. The plan was to sleep at 3-4 different peoples houses, 1-2 days each week. I thought I could do this for about a year and pay off bills. I spent days working or in my car. It didn't work out very well, I spent too much money on food, ended up in my car some nights. But all that was easier than I'm having to attempt now, older with some health and mobility issues. You might not want to use the bear bell for your bag. There's a good bit of research into their effectiveness, and if anything make you a bigger target. The sound isn't really scary to them, but is unnatural so it can even make them curious and come closer to you. Best deterrent is talking to someone else while hiking. If you're in bear country where you'd need mace and a bell, then you should be with someone so just talk to them. Not trying to be snooty or anything, just want everyone as safe as possible!

Wow this is awesome. Takes some guts to do this too. I'm not even old yet (37) but I already get it why older folks like nature and simple life. I've been living an office worker in a big city my whole life and it's exhausting. I knew it when I visited my mom and got excited just from seeing trees, fiields, waterfall, I thought to myself "wow this is so refreshing". Deep down inside we love nature. The ability to live both worlds - working, exploring, refreshing - is just phenomenal. Younger folks won't get it yet. Damn. Only if I could have even half the salary I get in the city in the countryside, I'll move in a heartbeat.
@potbellyfatguyfromnewyorkcity Жыл бұрын
I personally hate nature but hate paying rent even more. this is a very nice channel showing that car living (not suv or van as they are larger and less "stealth") can be done...why do I hate nature? rats, bugs, diseases, elements of rain wind snow heat, lack of facilities (running water, electricity), I can go on. I love modern infrastructure and living in a car is indeed that if you play your cards right (gym shower, cheap supermarket food, so many free activities, can go on). I really really hate paying rent to NYC landlords who love price gouging.

Never happen U get that becuz the prices there demand it Rural living is poverty level Unless u own ur own home there, forget it
@KittenBowl1 Жыл бұрын
@@YeshuaKingMessiahlol rural living why do you need a home? Things are cheap in rural city. In the city is where you need a place to live since the rent is a huge expense. If you own a home you’re stuck with mortgage, in the city mortgage you would need to be in a rat race since you have to spend so much. If you can find a decent job even in a rural city you can earn a comfortable living wage. Only the problem is it’s hard to find a good job in a rural city. That’s when it’s a problem. Poverty level in rural America is because people don’t work.

Get an eco billy ( the large one on rods camping gear au ) for heating water quickly. It's a hundred dollars but it's built like a tank. It burns sticks and twigs. It heats water super fast that way you can fill up your solar shower with hot water quick.. You can also get a small flat pack grill to cook on that uses sticks and twigs or charcoal. You can make you a cardboard partition to cook behind. You can find the flat pack grills on wish and also wish has those light bulbs that plug into a power bank. If you had two or three power banks keep them charged and you could stay out for a week before you need another charge up. Also get you a 5 gallon bucket and a new plunger and some Irish spring soap ( dollar tree ) and you can wash your clothes. You can spray off the soap at the car wash and hang you clothes up later also at car wash fill up a water container for using to wash up later instead of buying water for washing.

Hey Angie! New to your channel. Something we learned from using a van as a camper. In weather in the +30'c when the heat is unbearable. We found that screen netting for storm doors. If done correctly can be secured to the windows to allow air flow but not the bugs as well allowing the window to open and shut without wreaking the screen. If I remember correctly we used the back and front door to wedge it tight to the van. Maybe some magnetics could produce a more easy to remove alternative. Hopefully this helps !

But if your current clothes is your comfort and are of sentimental value, then you can just keep using them :) Also, I think it would be nice if your window shades can be attached on velcro pieces. Imagine how nice it would to just slap the shades to the velcros and then you have more time to lie down and read hihi
