A suggestion - when calibrating use a longer "line". In this case instead of using 1 cm on the ruler, use the 10 cm. This would reduce any error introduced in the clicking process by a factor of ten.

This is great, but I would add a note. To improve accuracy, if at all possible use a scan rather than a photo. A simple document scanner will work with a lot of flat parts. Second, if you are using a photo, you should try to correct for lens distortion before using the photo for modelling. You would be surprised how much our photos are distorted by lens curvature. I use Darktable which is able to correct for a wide array of popular lenses, and is free-open-source.

This 1000%. Not only will a scan get rid of distortion from the lens and the angle, but it also gives you precise measurements. Generally if you set your scan to 600 dpi, each inch will be 600 dots. Setting your scale to pixels will give measurements accurate to about 0.01 inches. Check your scanner by scanning a ruler too.

It's actually easier to put pen datum marks on a flat object before you photograph it ,rather than messing around with rulers and coins in the image

B spline is a good way for angles/curves. Allows for more fine tuning. I think constraint tangent would work as well but don’t quote me on that. Just some things I use. But I’m no pro by any means

Hey Don your videos have been helping me out alot, I am fairly new to CAD and I am having trouble with a arched line, the 2d piece I am sketching has 2 straight lines but the 4th being the top is curved and raised 2mm at the center how do I go about this?

You could also just change view mode to wireframe and you would see the image behind without changing transparancy

Cool video, however somewhere between creating the inner pockets and actually hitting the create pocket button, something doesn't work on my end. Instead of rectangles, I've drawn circles and no matter if I hit create pocket or create hole, it just doesn't do what I see in your video. I've even tried to follow every step by step and I get to this point and it just doesn't work. Any ideas?

It's impossible to take a photo without perspective and lens distortions. Without some king of algorithm to deal with these distortions this method will be very inaccurate.

this vid is crap freecad no longer has image workbench soo nothing in this video applies to those of us who just downloaded it and thus i still cant crop a part from an image to manipulate or rework or 3d print my free cad has all different icon's also so maybe do another vid on the freecad the rest of us have. I tried to find that crap icon you clicked on to make part a 3d model but i don't see that either it must be from one of the 500 workbenches available freecad is boo &%@@!! ive spent a week trying to crop part out of pic i still cant even put measurements for the part dimensions boo sh !worst cad and worst teaching vid
