Find yourself a Sony Digital8 cam that outputs through the DV port via FireWire, those old Sony camcorder takes old analog tapes and converts it to digital and even has a time base corrector to deal with distortions and jittering. The cheap $10 dongle and Elegato tend to suffer from jittering/distorted images probably since they don't have a built in TBC. I didn't realize how crappy the Elegato capture was until I used the Digital8. Also for post processing use QTGMC deinterlace and your home videos will look amazing in digital playback.

Use shielded cables, and record as best quality as you can for settings. Because the sound on the tape is the best its going to get as it degrades over time!
@TroyRalph-TomkenRoadMS3 жыл бұрын
While the sound may only be in mono you can get an audio splitter to send it to both sides. I do this on my NES to my Crt. It makes the sound come out of both sides even though the nes has only one audio jack. It would not be true stereo but during playback, if watching with headphones you would hear the audio in both ears.

Once you convert a VHS cassette to digital there can be lots of dead tape space that got converted. Those segments of converted video can be hard to find and not needed. PyVHS is a Python package that removes those unused tape spaces. PyPi and GitHub is where PyVHS is located. Say you converted a lot of videos and do not want to manually edit them then they can automatically be removed while you do something else.

On my Sony TV which has 3 phono typical socket: yellow for composite video and both red and white sockets, for audio. Now it does matter which socket you use for audio as if you put a mono phono (often black on older cameras) in the red phono socket you just get audio from the right channel (and while mono it still sounds odd as in unbalanced and TV needs to be made louder as only one side speaker working) but if you put a mono audio signal in the white (left) phono socket on the TV you will get audio from both speakers all be it in mono but it will sound far better and louder then just an unbalanced mono from one speaker on one side of the TV.

Hey Raphael. I was wondering if you knew if it's possible to use a Hi-8 camera to stream? The reason is to obtain a vintage effect for my viewers. I have a black magic intensity shuttle but the image on OBS freezes. Is there a dongle or some sort of capture device I might need?

The Blorgstein one way to avoid problems when live-streaming from the old cameras would be to convert the old tapes first then play it back back during the livestream as an offline video.

Peace be upon you. Can I know the latest Sony 8 mm camera and what is the difference between an 8 mm digital camera and a regular 8 mm camera
@imraphraph4 жыл бұрын
The 8mm digital camera uses digital signals to write the data onto the tape as oppose to analog. If you have a digital 8mm you can convert anything before but if you have an analog 8mm you cant convert digital 8mm tapes. Hope that answers your question 😀

@imraphraph3 жыл бұрын
You will need to buy an old tape player from ebay to play them. But most of them are more expensive than the cameras themselves. They are also called tape decks normally use by pros back then to play back content on broadcast television studios.
@roontoon5806 Жыл бұрын
There are so many videos on this and once again there is no solution for capturing the video WITHOUT capturing the time stamp that shows automatically when playing the tape from the camcorder. With VHS-C you can use a tape adapter and avoid this by using your capture device from a VCR. But with hi8 and other cassettes that don't have a VHS adapter you basically have to find a camcorder that will display playback without all the screen info like the time stamp. Does anyone know of a hi8 camcorder that does this? Or any other solutions? No one on youtube or reddit is covering this
