This is slick! Worked great! The only problem I had was at the very last step It may be because I'm using the US version, but the command, "bcdboot D:\Windows /1 en-us /s Z: /f ALL" Didn't work for me. The laptop does not have any OS yet (yes I encountered some error with win10 and changed eufi mode to legacy). If I follow your instruction on creating bootable usb which is eufi compatible, can I access the bios, change back from legacy to eufi, THEN start booting windows from bootable usb? 2. UEFI specs require the presence of an ESP (EFI System Partition) with a fat filesystem. You cannot skip that. The size of this partition should be enough to hold the boot configuration data. It can be less than 200 MB too.

Some more detailed observations: The EFI system partition created by this method is placed behind the Windows partition, which is unusual. The restriction on booting after conversion is that boot order has to be set as either "UEFI only" or "Both, UEFI first". The default boot setting for Lenovo ThinkPad with "Both, Legacy first" won't boot the computer.

If I'm not interested in keeping any of my data would just formatting my drive, changing boot type from legacy to uefi in bios, and installing windows 10 work ?
@NehalJWani9 жыл бұрын
+Alexandru Parausanu Yes, but you will have to make sure that you change the partition table from MBR to GPT and boot the Win10 installation media in UEFI mode.

I mounted windows 10 ISO with Rufus on a USB flash drive, and I checked MBR intead of GPT file system, as a result after OS installation, I could not enable secure boot nor fast boot in my ASUS laptop BIOS, which sucks because those two bios features are IMO must-have-enabled features. Will this method in the video un-grey out the features in my BIOS ? Or do I have to re-install Windows 10 ? I'm asking because it would be great if the method of the video would allow what I want to do, since it's faster than reinstalling the entire OS as well as having to download all the apps again :'(

Yes, after this method, you will be able to use secure boot.

Partition table applies to all partitions on a block device. It doesn't make sense of converting one partition to 'GPT'. We convert the partition table not partitions themselves.

Did all the steps (on Windows 7, with a Windows 10 Recovery USB), and everything went smooth. But, when i go to msinfo32, there's no BIOS MODE entry. I checked Google, and it was also suggested a .log file from C:/Windows/Panther (setupact.log). The Detected Boot Environment is BIOS, so i'm guessing i'm still, somehow, booting in Legacy. Can you help me out? Thank you for a great share :)
@NehalJWani7 жыл бұрын
Setupact.log is only created during installation of Windows. Can you go to the command prompt, type: diskpart list disk And see if there is an asterisk symbol (*) in the GPT column?
@jppmarujp7 жыл бұрын
Hello Nehal. Yes, there is and asterisk in the GPT column. Does that means that it's booting in UEFI?
@gvklaveren9 жыл бұрын
Nice explanation :)But.... at step 10 you let the use dangling around a bit: how to start in UEFI?! Because I the user had a working Win10 system, booting from a MBR disk, they were booting from MBR/BIOS. After changing the MBR disk to GPT the system will not start unless you make changes to the BIOS (AND you have to check PRELIMINARY (before you do ANYTHING) whether the motherboard is capable to start via UEFI and how to change the settings. (For experienced users this is clear, but for newbies it can be a pitfall.)
@NehalJWani9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I'll add an annotation in the beginning stating that the user's mobo must be UEFI compatible and he should read his mobo's documentation to know how yo switch the boot mode.

Hi, Nehal. I notice that you're interested in helping people in the comments and I'm extremely grateful. I used your older guide and it just rendered my PC unusable. I had to use the command line from an install disc to wipe the drive and restore my system image (which I nearly didn't make; that would have been so very stupid!). So, first, is there any thing I should know about doing this with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit? My HDD is 3TB and when I built this PC Asus Disk Unlocker was installed to account for that, and it uses some virtual drive thing to let me use all the space, and Windows reads my HDD as 2TB and another 1TB virtual drive. I don't really understand how it works but could that be the problem? I don't care about the data on that 1TB partition/virtual drive as it's just my Steam games that can be downloaded again. I may have done one of your steps wrong as I think they're a bit vague (on your older guide at least) for those of us that don't have experience with this, but I can't be sure. Thank you again, sincerely.

Nehal J Wani I'm really really close! but I did eventually get stuck. In step 9, where you say to determine which partition has Windows, mine is now F. We're then to type bcdboot F:\Windows /l en-us /s Z: /f ALL but when I type that it doesn't tell me the boot files were created successfully; instead it gives me the whole bcdboot guide that you'd get if you'd simply typed 'bcdboot' and pressed Enter. My Windows is in Irish, and whilst I didn't think it mattered, could that be the problem? Thank you again!
@NehalJWani9 жыл бұрын
+Ei’ríġ Proinsias Dammantaċ Ó Gamhna. Yeah, in Windows 7, I think you need to type: bcdboot F:\Windows /l en-us /s Z: /f UEFI

Nehal J Wani Thanks very much. I tried that and several variations on it, all of which produce the same results as before. In the guide it brings up, there's a few examples of commands listed, one of which appears to copy the files. It's the first example command, and it is more or less the same as the first half of the command you're having us enter. Well, when i tried that using the correct letters for my situation, it told me it had failed to copy the files. Is that normal? I'll need to get back to it in a few hours. I don't have access to gmail because I'm using the Midori that comes with System Rescue CD and for some reason it crashes gmail. I'll attempt Hangouts when I'm back, and hopefully you'll be available. Thanks again.

Hi! Tried your method twice and after completing the proces both times I ended up with a laptop that couldn't even boot up. It like it is no operating system anymore. I had to do a fresh install of Windows 10 to even get it working. Any advice on how to solve that problem?
@NehalJWani9 жыл бұрын
You were probably booting the OS after conversion in Legacy mode. After the conversion you have to change settings in the BIOS to boot the operating system in UEFI mode or turn off Legacy Mode. If neither option is available for you, then your motherboard probably doesn't support UEFI.
@Hrvojejur9 жыл бұрын
+Nehal J Wani It does support UEFI but here is the deal. I can't install windows on UEFI because it doesn't recognise my bootable USB. Another problem is that when installed on BIOS is has some issues, 20% of the time it won't shut down. Do you think that converting to UEFI would help? Tnx for the reply :D
@NehalJWani9 жыл бұрын
I don't know if installing in UEFI will help in what way. But I do know that you can turn in fast startup in Windows. Also, for the USB to be bootable in UEFI mode, it has to have fat32 filesystem.
@munsoormalik84498 жыл бұрын
Mr. Wani, Sorry for the delay but I was trying to figure out why my system stopped booting. I finally reset CMOS, replaced the battery, unplugged everything and restarted. Eventuall, it booted up......and so did WIndows.....in UEFI mode. Sorry to have bothered you on this. It may be a good ides to warn users that if the BIOS is corrupted, like mine was, they should recover the BIOS before troubleshooting elsewhere. Alas, I also ordered a Z97 motherboard, the processor and a Noctua heat sink as I thought the motherboard was screwed. I guess every lesson has a price but I will try to return these or sell them off to someone. Thanks again, your procedure was spot on and very helpful. Munsoor Malik

+Nehal J Wani thanks for replying. So carry on with the SSD even though there is only one partition? and do you know why the secondary HDD has an offset of 351mb? Thank you :)
@NehalJWani9 жыл бұрын
Well, actually, you can convert both the disks to GPT partition table. The 351MB partition is probably a system partition, which you will anyway not require after converting to UEFI and creating an EFI partition. If you face any trouble, feel free to comment here.
@GregTheCamper9 жыл бұрын
+Nehal J Wani It worked! I love you my good man. I haven't done anything to the HDD where system is installed, but the SSD with windows is now UEFI :). Thanks so much. Do you think I should change the HDD or just leave as is?
@NehalJWani9 жыл бұрын
That is upto you. Most probably it has a MBR partition table, which restricts you to only 4 primary partitions. After that, either you convert it to a dynamic disk, or use logical partitions in an extended partition or you could just convert it to GPT partition table and forget about the number. In case you want to keep only one partition on th HDD, then it doesn't matter what partition table u choose.

hi, im running windows 7 64bit and i have a 2tb hard drive running on a legacy bios machine. my motherboard/bios does have the option to run uefi. i want to upgrade my hard drive to a 4tb hard drive but to do so i need it to boot in uefi so all 4tb are recognized as one drive. i want to use your tutorial to do this but when you say "without data loss" does that mean after I do this process both my windows 7 installation AND all of the programs I have installed will be available on the newly formed uefi drive so I wont have to reinstall any of the programs I had installed on my legacy drive? thank you.

Yes, you will have to install Windows 7 in Legacy mode and then convert it to UEFI using this method. If you have an existing installation, you can try to move it to the 4TB one, and convert that for testing it out.

Before proceeding, please backup your data and confirm that your motherboard supports booting in UEFI mode.

Nehal J Wani great, thanks, will try it out. It's anyway a new laptop, don't mind losing the data

Ideally, you shouldn't be loosing data, but I ask everyone, just in case.

I need help the BCD command at the very end won't work, I know it's small "L". My problem is that I type the string and it doesn't do anything, it just lists the help menu for bcdboot. I'm unable to copy the BCD. I know I'm in uefi mode because system restore told me when I tried to repair and restore the system. Do you have any solutions as to why I'm command is not working? Thanks
@NehalJWani8 жыл бұрын
If bcdboot command lists you the help menu, then you are typing something wrong. In order for me to help you, please state which version of Windows you are trying this on, and the rescue media which you are using to reach the command prompt, is of which version of Windows, and also show me the exact bcdboot command that you are typing.

Wow. I had completely messed up my boot files and partitions fortunately, cause I don't know how how I fixed it I'm able to boot. However, I can no longer boot from the the actual drive but from bootmgr. Is this OK?
@molotovgod8 жыл бұрын
So this is what happened, I followed your instructions to the dot and managed to convert to UEFI but when trying to copy the boot files over to using the command, nothing would happen. Turns out I had a damaged EFI and the System one that you say on your video to replace was the culprit. I ended up erasing it, recreating the EFI over the System file and it worked, all night I was freaking out because nothing would work, System restore didn't even help because it warned me that the BACKUP was Legacy and couldn't recover because I was UEFI (that's a good sign). Now, the weird part is that I can't boot directly from my 850 SSD, but I can boot from WINDOWS BOOTMGR. Is this an image? Also, I'm going to try to see if Clover see's Windows, backing up my system with the new UEFI config just in case.
@NehalJWani8 жыл бұрын
I am glad it finally worked for you!. As far as I know, Clover does see Windows. About the boot entry, if you are able to boot from 'Windows Boot Manager", then yes, that is expected, as that is the UEFI boot entry for Windows. It's probably the case that when you try to select your SSD to boot from, your computer tries to boot it in Legacy mode. This differs from manufacturer to manufacturer. There is no harm in booting from the UEFI Boot Entry. That is how it should ideally be. Do you mind sharing the make/model of your computer?

It's a custom built I'm writing from my phone I'll get you the specs if you still want them sometime today. I am running El Capitán on a m. 2 and windows 7 on a 850 still unable to have Clover boot windows so I gotta F12 everytime.

Hey there, I have removed my separate MBR partition using easyBCD. It is now part of the main OS partition. Can I still follow this guide or do I need to recreate it?
@NehalJWani9 жыл бұрын
+SaladFingers If you are talking about System Reserved Partition, then yes, you can still follow this.
@SaladFingers_9 жыл бұрын
Nehal J Wani Yes, my win10 drive only has one partition with the OS, without the 100/200mb part. Good to know, going to try this tonight. Is there anything extra I should consider for doing this on an SSD? PS: Wow, what a quick reply..

+SaladFingers Well, I have two different methods. The other one is at kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5yZkH5vnbuolc0 . So, if this one doesn't work, you can always follow the other one :)

Nehal J Wani Yes I got here from your other video :) Ok, backup time to avoid crying later.. heh. Will post back once I'm done with this. Thanks for answering my questions!

@NehalJWani9 жыл бұрын
+mac9219 It is not really necessary, but if you want, you can use the locale for your country/region.
