Converting a DeWalt 110v battery charger to 240v for $1.75

I bought a DeWalt drill and impact driver set from a recent trip to the US. The problem is that in Australia we have 240v electricity so I swapped a capacitor to make the charger work here in Australia.
If you want to do this yourself I accept no liability whatsoever. Do so at your own risk!

Things to be added mate /!MAKE ! SURE!!\ You use the same (uF) values and only replace the main cap's voltage (Example, 100uF 200v to a 100uF 400v) Replace the MOV's (again, same reference to 250v) Replace the Polyester capacitor (Same nF/uF to 275v) Replace the FUSE (Same Amps but 250v) Done this after converting a Yamaha XS205 Sega Saturn PSU Heat's not a concern, but i do recomend adding a Heatsink with Artic Silver (or any other) thermal paste. Also you won't burn down your house if a power surge goes through your device.

for all the guys who ask about how is it that simple, well, this charger uses a pwm power supply that works anywhere between 85 and 240 volts, the circuit is universal, but they just installed a lower voltage capacitor. so when on 220, the rectified dc will be around 330 volts, the pwm.circuit will work according to the fedback setpoint from the output of the puls transformer , and the battery volt will not increase. one more thing, many mentioned a varistor, the varistor is only for protection againest a higher voltage, if your charges comes with a varistor you will need to change it with one that withstands abit higher than 240 to protect your charger against higher voltage. but the varistor itseld does not help in the conversion itself. well done Bruno.

Hi, Mohammad. Does this mean that if I make the changes you outlined above in my 110 v Dewalt, provided I find the same circuitry, that if I take it back to the US, I could use it on 110v again without any changes? In other words, are you saying that Dewalt screwed all of us who might need multivoltage capability for the cost of a few pennies for higher rated parts???

hi, i have a Nintendo adapter(110v) which someone plugged it to the outlet (220v) so i opened it to find that the main capacitor (200v) has exploded so i changed it with 400v one and nothing happened, so i went through troubleshooting and found that one of the output schottky diodes was faulty , after changing that it worked perfectly, thank u. شكرا مهندسنا الفاضل لانك اعطيتني الثقة والمعلومة الأكيدة

I have a serious doubt that changing the capacitor only is enough for this conversion. Actually, in almost every power tool charger conversion I've done until today, I had to change the Thermistor. Other video here in youtube shows even the need to add a Varistor. Even if your charger works, it doesn't means it sends the right voltage or it won't burn on the long run, as well as damaging the batteries. It just have no sense to change the Capacitor alone.

If you have a stepdown transformer where to plug the charger why did you change the capacitor? For this to worl at least the inner transformer needs to be changed it is the transformer that brings the voltage down to 20v not the capacitor.

I am brining my Dewalt tools to Thailand next month, and was looking into this. in 2018 they have step down transformers for sale online for about $12, so it is pretty cheap to keep your charger original, and use it for both voltages

Maybe, the capacitor burst out. First of all, Check out those all part on PCB with naked eyes and use multimeter. It's simple. Just replace those parts that were burnt. 1.Capacitor 2. Fuse 3. MosFET 4. Diode. These 4 things are critical.

The MOSFET has a drain-source voltage of 600 volts and a RMS isolation voltage of 2000 volts - no worries on that component. The capacitor is used to filter out ripple voltage from a bridge rectifier (converts the incoming AC voltage to DC voltage), if anyone is curious. The reason why the capacitor needs to be rated for 400 volts or greater is because the DC voltage is way too high. Consider that your country uses AC voltage ranging from 220vac to 250vac. Remember, that is the RMS voltage. Multiply the RMS voltage by the square root of 2 (1.414). Once the AC voltage is rectified, your DC voltage will be 311-353.5 volts. Now, put that voltage through an electrolytic capacitor rated for 200 volts and...pop!

You can sometimes get lucky with a "regular" T15 Torx, but the actual screw is a ST15 security Torx (with the nub in the middle). Might as well buy the set, especially if you intend to play with DeWalt battery packs too (they take a ST10 bit).

hope someone can help before I go down this path want to be sure I only have to change the capacitor I have same model charger dcb107 just got it from ebay USA didnt even think about the 110v issue? stupid me. Found the capacitor on ebay $2 450v / 100 uF. I live in Thailand so sending the stuff back means more time money shipping import duty etc. So dose this conversion really work? is it this simple? Is it still working? Any tips Im not an expert dose the capacitor go a certain way? Are the terminals easy to see and solder? would appreciate Any advice . will 450v/ 100 uF be ok? cant find the 10uF? Thanks ant

I saw the Russian video too, different model charger. He added two extra components verisistor ? and heat resistor looked a bit doggy to me but it worked older dewalt model dcb 112 ? i think? Hope this isnt a stupid question but what's a heatsink? you mentioned adding it to somthing? massive ask but anyc chance of an updated video of exactly how you removed the circuit board and soldered the capasitor. best regards ant. Just dont want to F.....k it up bro.
