Thank you for always being so matter-of-fact about mistakes and setbacks. One of the most difficult ideas I try to get across to my art students is that mistakes and setbacks happen, and that you just need to figure out what went wrong, learn from it, and then move on. It is nice to see it from a professional!

I'd always assumed that books with this black leather spine section were placed OVER a cloth cover which went over the entire book. I tried this project with cloth instead of leather - without the details on the spine and so on. The biggest problem for me was to cut and fold the cloth to glue it in the book. Specially the part near the spine. I made some mistakes for sure and probably it was more difficult than it should be, but im happy with the result regardless. I learned with the mistakes (some stuff you just learn passing through it) and also managed to bind a decent cover (not perfect, but decent). Thank you for another awesome video. I keep returning to them to refresh my memory and try new projects.

This was exactly what I needed to see. I've been banging my head against a wall trying to figure out the best approach to type, tools and labeling. Couldn't figure the tools, and loved your demonstration of the hand-held type chase. All I usually see are these very expensive machines that take up loads of space. Seeing a small specialized tool for holding type seems the perfect answer to my problem. If I'm going to try to make a book, I'd like the title to look nice. May take a bit to save up for it and the type, but I know what to look for and where to find it. Thank you so much for showing all of the details, even the 'non-sexy' but completely necessary parts of a hobby I'm coming to adore.

7:33 Oh yeah I needed to find something other than pressing boards to hold a spine in place for a separate project. As the glue was drying so I used rubber bands and something to buffer underneath the bands so that it doesn't make any marks. That was just my go to at the time. I don't know if there is a more obvious answer to that because I would also like something that I don't have to hold for 10minutes and can go do something else. 8:13 I have heard some of my US friends getting confused by the term 'muck around' haha maybe not all of them, but I think it's a British term that us Aussies use

@DASBookbinding4 жыл бұрын
Finishing tools are expensive in every country. They are just outrageously expensive anywhere outside the country they are manufactured. They are easy enough to find. An email to Talas, Hewits or Kevin Noakes with a platinum/gold coloured credit card in hand and you can have as many as you want. Unfortunately the colour associated with my CC is red:( The other thing to try is making your own. Many famous binders make their own tools. Wilcox used to make his own type! I really liked the way you inserted the original cover into new boards, cuts down on bulk. Will have to try. Also a mold for the spine, genius, must try that instead of strings. I've used jute twine instead of leather strip for false bands before now and kitchen roll tube for curved spine. If you use tacky glue instead of standard PVA, it would give you longer work time
@DASBookbinding4 жыл бұрын
Using cord to tie up the book didn't work for me on this project because of the flat spine. I stole this idea from someone, but not exactly sure who it was - maybe Mark Esser. For a longer open time I'd use mix, but for this video I wanted to simplify and only use 1 adhesive. Good idea with the kitchen roll. All the best, DAS

Hi Lisa. I would also love to see someone bind a book in velvet. According to B Middleton, velvet covers were common in the Tudor and Stuart periods. This is certainly a devotional book style covering. It would be easy enough to fake, but I generally don't do fakes. Well except for my last 2 videos..... Good luck on your binding journey! DAS

I'm wondering at 7:30 whether painter's tape would work? That's what woodworkers do where clamps would damage the surface of the workpiece (e.g. when 'facing' ply edges with hardwood). But maybe setup will cost you more than the 5min you're trying to save =). If you have to do it often it might be worth it: some ply and two clamps to go around the book (or can you tape straight to the cardboard without damage? it'll be covered anyway later), then 5--10 strips of painter's/masking tape across the spine for applying the pressure... For woodworkers it's not so much for saving time, as a lack of hands to apply consistent pressure in 10places at once.
@DASBookbinding3 жыл бұрын
I do have a set of pressing board with rods taped with blue tape to the edge. I think I didn't want to use them because it was something else I'd have to explain. Regards the forming thing, that certainly could be done better. A common trick used by book conservators is to wrap the book with an elastic bandage, which would have worked here too. I had this plan to do a similar cased binding and was going to reuse this form. Not happening:( All the best, DAS
