Converting an old Air Compressor into an Auxiliary Air Tank : Mo' Air, Mo' Power!

In this episode we re-purpose a tank from a stripped down home Air Compressor and turn it into an Auxiliary Air Tank to give us more usable air.

I did this. Had a noisy air compressor and took off the motor. Capped the air outlet and used a 1 inch to 1/4 inch reducer and tee fitting to plumb the tank into my existing setup. It works great though I only use the extra tank when I'm running the 1/2 inch impact. Most of the time I don't need it but it's handy. Just remember you're putting additional load on your motor so I don't know how that will shorten its life but sometimes you're in a jam and you need more air rather than a bigger compressor.

I just do not understand what you were accomplishing/gluing with the coin and fitting around 3:25. Glued parts generally should not be put under high pressures imho. I would have sawed/cut/drilled/welded the proper fitting on that. But I suppose if the tank is up high it won't do as much damage if it flies apart. But I do not know exactly what you were doing so I'll reserve judgement on this.

I reckon you have just made an overhead ticking time bomb! I hope that nobody is standing under that old tank when it bursts.

@@gazsto9510 Hello Gaz Sto I am not a professional sprayer, what I understand is on tools that have a high demand (such as spraying, large grinders or guns. High demand tools) that by having the extra air, you are saving the compressor from coming on all the time, storage of air just gives you a biger volume. If your compressor only has a say 9 CFM as my first one did. My second compressors produces 13 CFM. It's all to do with capacity gives you a longer duration. Other wise your compressor will be gasping, struggling to keep up, running all the time. I have also gone up with high demand Connections. In the back pages of (SCREWFIX CATALOGUE they are called Pcl XF fittings, 9.5mm eg, Extra Flow) and on the internet you will find them. I have also used a bigger bore pipe 9.5 mm from Screw Fix or Machine Mart tools. You can find a tremendous amount of information on the internet, and TOOLS, hope this helps. @@geofflewis4815 Thanks mate, appreciate the help and guidance. Get's a little overwhelming all the info out there sometimes. Been using a 11CFM tank and it's been good for what I need, I use a LVLP spray gun that uses about 4CFM so it copes really well, but I have some old propane tanks that are standing idle and thought I could add some extra air. Will check Screwfix for those fittings. Gaz Sto

Hello Gaz Sto. I was looking back on a small web site, and this chap I think did a great job of explaining whot to do. He first obtained an old gas Calor propane bottle and this one he had was an old type bottle because he could remove the shroud around the valve, ( the first bottle I got was WELDED which making removal of the Valve very difficult, I later found out Calor use a thread locking liquid possible "lock tite" as I could NOT REMOVE THE VALVE. Went back to my local dump an found another tank, this had a bolt on shroud. BUT STILL HAVING A PIG OF A JOB TO REMOVE THE VALVE. You can't pot a flame on the oval because of the thread locking liquid 🤔. But this chap is very clear how to build the pipe layout 👍👍best of luck. Or a milling machine to drill the valve out as he said its BRONZE hope this little bit helps. My son in law is trying to do the same with this type of bottle. Quite a capacity. I have singe 50l 3hp compressor and im looking to increase capacity but cant find air tanks or old compressors to buy. Wondering if i could i use expansion tank for heating system?

Harbor freight has Tanks I think in 10Gal
