An update for anyone still interested in this channel! I am Alex (the guy with a mustache who really regrets eating that banana..) and both Ian and I are healthy and active! Unfortunately after this video went up we lost our space to forge, and have since been looking for one. Luckily we've just made some headway and should hopefully be posting more! And for anyone wondering, the forge never blew up or gave out, but we ditched the lid after one use, it only got in the way and didn't really serve much of a purpose. Thank you everybody for all your support on this video, it has been has been crazy to see a weekend project spread to so many people! PS If you're dying to see more of Ian and I regardless of what we're doing, make sure to stop by Ian's gaming channel NerdCave.Exe for some laughs. Happy forging everyone!

Thanks fellas. Just getting into black smithing and you guys saved me a lot of money and days of sleeping on couch for spending it. I've convinced my wife that I don't don't need to order the $300 forge now.

Why did u make the refracting material into brick, u should have just lined the bbq with the we material.
@EmperorAndr3w5 жыл бұрын
Because air needs to be able to flow through the coals inside. If they poured a slab there would be no airflow to stoke the coals evenly.
@Mrflutters5 жыл бұрын
@@EmperorAndr3w i sapose the hair dryer is there because it looks good hahaha also they could easily have holes for airflow if they poured the mix into it

WOW, GUYS! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT! We started this channel and made this video as a thought that MAYBE we might keep going, but we moved shortly after this, so we didn't have our work space anymore, and honestly forgot about this channel! Today I randomly sign back in and see these numbers, and I'm just blown away! I am talking with Alex about making some more videos as soon as we possibly can, and I hope you guys are still interested in seeing more! We'll probably start out with making some simple tools or blades or what not, but if there's anything you want to see, then please comment letting us know! Thank you so much again! -Ian

Seems like you could cast 6 slabs of brick mix to any size you want, stack them like a box on any suitable surface, and skip the barbeque entirely.

Cool 😎 The math comment got me to chuckle! I worked 30 years as a glazier and used math every day. Compound angles, dividing radius’s into equal segments, a lot of geometry. Oh by the way I flunked geometry twice so I had to teach myself!

Genius! Lots of possible improvements in hindsight, but great job. I have an old BBQ pit just for my project. May just buy firebricks and cut the last to fit though. Also thought that cement and or plaster of Paris could be cast in place in the bottom and sides of the pit. My bellows will be a shop vacuum's discharge, which I probably will need some way to turn down, or partly redirect, because is would blow too much...

To any one looking to make this. DO NOT USE CONCRETE BOARD! there are filler materials used to make concrete board that are bad news when heated at high temps. You might get away with the base but do not use it as a cover, I still would not recommend as a base. Not only that concrete let alone the fillers are not intended for high temps after a few uses it will start to fall apart.

Do I need bricks or could I just pour the plaster into the grill
@leasemore60534 жыл бұрын
You could pour it in if it was sealed. But wouldn't be able to change the layout for different sized pieces.

One thing i would of done is that hole you you covered up i would of converted it into my forced air by running piping through it into the bottom to force the air up through the fuel you would use.

I think it would have been simpler to just cast the base in one piece instead of casting the bricks, at least it worked better for me. As for the fuel, your gonna go broke buying lump charcoal. You can make it quite easily out of scrap wood. I make mine from pine scraps I get for $5 a truck load from a local lumber mill who just throws out the the cut offs into a pile and I gather it up, most of the time I only need to spilt it once or twice to get is nice and small warning, DO NOT GET TREATED LUMBER for the scraps, never burn the stuff) You can always use yard waste to make the charcoal, check out Purgatory Ironworks video as to how to make it. Saved me a bunch. If you can access it, coal is a whole lot easier to use that charcoal, they both contain the same amount of energy per pound but you will go through 10 buckets of charcoal to do the same work 1 bucket of coal will

It'll come in handy on a lot of projects I just thought of. Didn't know you could mix 3 simple things to make the blocks.

You need something to regulate the air fuel ratio, or you are going to burn up every piece of metal that you put in there. Your flame is WAY too hot, and when properly regulated, should look like very clearly defined vertical flames. If your hair dryer is running off of 110 volts, then you can take a light dimmer switch, and use that to turn down the flame. Otherwise, if you actually take the blower motor OUT of the hair dryer, that runs on 12 volts - and gives you the ability to run it off a car battery - but makes it harder to regulate. In that case, simply leave it running at full blast, and WASTE some of it by pulling the hair dryer AWAY from the hole that you have it inserted into. You can probably come up with an arrangement to lock it into place, once it has been pulled far enough away from the hole. Just a few inches should do it.
