Hi Meg, Next time you are at the store , pick up a 2 inch magnetic driver extension and a half a dozen #2 Phillips screw bits, That way your screws stay on the impact driver and don’t fall on the ground.

That turned out great, you may have done it off camera, but just in case, don't forget to seal the 2 original holes that you didn't use when attaching the storage rack to the wall. And if you're going to be tempted to put any weight on the shelves above your workbench, I would suggest using both holes of the brackets to secure them. But that was a huge improvement, I can't believe what you can get done by yourself.

Good job girl always seem to impress, The reason your self tapping or tek screws however you want to call them. The reason you were snapping the heads off is because you don’t pre-drill into the metal on a self tapper, especially when the metals not very thick because then it’s catching the edges before it starts catching the pointed part so then it gets caught instead of cutting and snap the heads off so just pre-drill your board and then let the self tappers do their job.

I watched you on you tube yesterday Monday 15th July 2024, Loved it, since losing my Wife in November of 2018, I have slowly working on how to use the internet. I wish you well in your new home. Just one pointer, when you are screwing self tappers, it is advised to make a small pilot hole first, this way you will be able to screw the self tapper easier. be careful you do not get Heat stroke, and keep hydrated. To fasten to the metal through wood. Predrill the wood slightly larger than the threads on the screw so that they don't catch the wood. Will be much easier I promise 😊

Lack of grease isn't the issue. The problem is those latches are meant to be opened simultaneously. Otherwise they're fighting against each other, one trying to open and the other holding it closed. Pull both handles at the same time and I guarantee it'll pop right open

As a carpenter you should take door hinge pins out,remove door and install frame with 3 screws under the weather strip so they are hidden while plumbing up the frame.

Sealant!!! Didn't want to say caulk on camera !!! Priceless... Pre drill holes in steel with a drill... Those self tappers don't cut it...

Quick little tip for your storage box shelves. Slap a couple of 1X4 boards on a diagonal on the back side to stop them from racking, really stiffens them up while they remain freestanding and easily moveable. I must admit your perseverance and problem solving to come up with a solution that works for you is admirable.

Next door install with jam, remove door from jam. Install jam into frame opening. Easier to manipulate to fit and fasten to frame. Great job!

if you pre drill a hole into your wood slightly larger than the screw it wont push the wood back when you hit the other material with the screw.

You can use your oscillating saw to cut the protrubing screw tips before sealing them for a tighter seal

a tip on toe nailing/ screwing drill your hole first ,you can go in strait 1/8 in then angle it , also always predrill for the self tapping screws through the wood. probably need to eventually change out the roof screws for some rubber sealed roofing screws, something you might want to consider is framing out the other side of the door with a place for a big fan in it. by your self did a good job! p-s p-o- door would have screwed it together. not too shabby of a handy- woman . btw Dont get the spray foam on your clothes it NEVER comes out!!!! i have a shirt that i got it on over a year ago and been washed many, many times still there good luck and have fun

Excellent job. I do worry about you, with some of your antics! I'd suggest wearing sturdier shoes, for if you drop something...OUCH! Also, if I may suggest that anytime you are using a power saw on wood, always clamp the wood down. I was watching you making that "notch" on free-floating wood whilst holding my breath!

Little tip. I’d the strew doesn’t fit in the crack your filling with the expanding foam don’t use it but use some type of silicon/sealant instead. The foam needs to be between something to seal or else over time it will fail so I use the thickness of the straw that comes with the can.

I love your quirkiness and your never give up character! I'm so glad you did this video because I really want to get a shipping container for my archery range storage. I'm not sure if I would put in the standard door instead of using the container's doors but I guess it depends on how easy the doors are to operate. I can't believe you get temperatures equal to what we get in Texas! Keep up the good fight but be careful of over stressing your skeletal joints. I have often done a lot on my own as you are and now that I'm 67 my joints are letting me know that I should have go help more often...

Great job, Meg! You got quite a bit completed on the C-can! Especially during a heatwave too! I remember when I was working in the Columbia Icefield, in 2021. A heatwave came through Western Canada and the temperature reached 36 degrees Celsius. It was hot, but not muggy because the humidity was around 20%.

Nice work. A future project could be to add an awning that the sea can door could still freely swing under to have a shaded work area extend out from the entry. "Yaah!" Another job well done. I’m always amazed by your perseverance. It also shows how great it is to use the right tools. Those self-tapping screws go in steel like butter. I do wonder how temperature differences inside the container will relate to the outside temperature, especially the moisture levels in the container during the colder autumn and winter months. Hey Roy!! Thank you!! Lol the inside of the can is probably 10 degrees (C) warmer! You could feel the heat wall walking into the can from the outside 40C air. But yes, it'll be interesting to see how it fairs in the fall and winter. I'll get that fan installed in it soon, and that should help a bit. A tip when cutting wood on a saw stool you put your knee on the wood to help hold it still while cutting freeing up your other hand. Also sea can over here in new Zealand we call them shipping containers Love your videos great to see the progress your making.

in future projects maybe try using an adhesive rather than drilling holes in the exterior of the container. adhesives are plenty strong enough to hold things up without screws. awesome jobs done tho kudos!

I'm curious, since they weren't shown, I have to wonder if you remembered about those first 2 self-tapping screws that you pulled and ultimately didn't use. With how unruly the silicone was after finishing with the roof, did you fill those 2 holes with silicone before you'd turned on the camera to film the ones we saw...? It worried me that they weren't mentioned at all after the fact, since they're hidden behind the rack storage, you could have a huge problem before even knowing.

building stores have premade metal brackets under lots of names: shelf brackets corner brackets strong ties (Simpson brand) that would be better for that job of tying the shelves to the container wall, they already have screw holes in them and being thin metal it makes screwing in those self tapping screws much easier. I've used them to mount plywood to walls to hold electronics like switches and routers.

Longer handles, like a piece of galvanized pipe slipped over the ones there, and a blob of grease in each socket will help you open those container doors. Diagonal pieces on the back of that 2x4 structure would do wonders to stabilize it laterally. Almost anything would work 2x4, 1x4, or plywood rips.

Howdy Meg, just a suggestion for next time, you could have built that wooden shelf outside and then just slid inside, looks like it had enough clearance. If not then you could have purchased some corner brace plates that you just screw to connect, hope that helps for a next time lol, btw you’re doing a great job improvising with what you have. You’re doing a great job. I know you’re using it as a work shop but I would have framed out the inside and insulated the whole thing floor to ceiling and put osb on the walls, floor and ceiling. By doing this the container would stay cooler and the fan you would be able to put down the far end so it blows the air towards the doors.

I would recommend building a roof structure on to the container or over it so you have a car port on each side. It will help to keep the sun off the container and a little cooler.

Another very cool project in the books. One small suggestion would be to get yourself a surform wood plane (I think that's what they're called - the ones with a cheese grater syle blade) that way you can rip wood oversized then bring them down to length to better fine tune your fitment. They're a bit awkward to use at first but once you get the rythem going can really chew through some wood. The one we have has saved me from many a dodgy cut over the years 😂

You need to use a drill bit the same size as the thread of the screw, then run the self drilling screw in, acts as a guide and allows the screw to easily cut the metal

meg, you need to get the container off the ground and also to level it up. as it settles the doors will get harder to open and if on the ground moisture will wick up and rot the floor.

Meg you don't need two locks either side. Sister and mum are the same with their containers. Angle grind one off from either side and make life easy. You'll have to get bolts and roofers masik to seal the holes but this will save your back.

I said and comeback and watch so here I am starting from 20:00 minute mark, Saturday 7/20 here and i agree with that yukkie heat 8 am here already 83° , That is my favorite makita saw, I have that exact model, way lighter than my worm-saw. haha I saw the same trick the polish plane. May I suggest sealing up those screw holes with a good silicone or maybe butyl ta'pe to keep elements out. and ill be back to watch remaining 22 minutes great job Meg, you have some skills, in no time you will start on that dream home.

when youre doing the "polish planer" with a skilsaw, try to use both hands on the saw. either clamp or screw down your board. you can use the same trick if you need to cut a notch out of a board and have it flush. now that youre offgrid it might be a good idea to start building up your own little hardware/lumber store so you can have fasteners, lumber, caulking, tape, spray paint, and any other things you use frequently. after we bought our home thats what we did and its saved us more than a few time from going to the store for one thing to finish a project. we keep adding things to our hardware/lumber store all the time. beside big projects, we rarely have to go the hardware store for anything. its a time saver. remember, one is none and two is one when you start your home store.

@@Meg.August its saved me more times than i can count when doing projects at home late at night and everything is closed. when i use something from my store, i replace it with two. since owning a home ive found keeping things stocked with the idea of "one is none and two is one" has served me well. im never out of things that way. we also do the same with canned/boxed food, bathroom stuff, paper products basically a large pantry.

Corner gussets or plywood in the corners of the shelf will make them stronger. Pick up some greese for the top and bottom latch, it'll make it easier to latch and unlatch. You might want to sand or Stainless Steel Scouring Pad the roof rust a little, then tar and snow seal it so you don't get leaks. Snow seal is the last layer, it's white so it'll reflect heat. Not sure of your coverage but, 5 gallon of black tar seal, thick layer, let set a couple weeks. Then a 5 gallon can of snow seal. Stuff is very messy so plan for lots of rags and turpentine for clean-up. Then again, you might have other idea's for the roof. My first thought was level only works if the structure is level, but hay, you were funny and entertaining to watch and you did get that door wibble, wobbley in.😅😉😊

use the tapping screws from the outside in. easier to seal and will make a stronger connection.

Entertaining video. i saw you put caulking on the outside of the side of the container around the 2 self tappers from L brackets from the shelves. these L brackets have 3 holes per bracket for a reason, i suggest you use them all 3 instead only the bottom ones... otherwise after you put some weight on them, some day you will find your shelves bend forwards and all dropped down all over your work bench and floor and most likely have things broken.

Something I've admired about this channel is Meg is consistent when it comes to keeping her projects and work space neat and organized. When she was wrenching on cars she would always knock off the grease and oil before moving forward and when she built the shelving unit it was to gain space and organize the garage. This just shows she takes pride in what she is doing. Proud of you kid. Curious to know if you've considered using solar to power the shop?

Aw thanks Rob!!! I do enjoy a clean and organized space lol! And you know, I would LOVE to get solar set up here, but budget wise, I won't be able to swing it just yet.
