This is a topic I've put a lot of thought in the last few years, also because I've worked with both of them on a professional setting. If you primarily work on 3D, I'd go for Unreal, not only because of the engine itself, but also because of the whole creative ecosystem that Epic Games is building around it, which includes free access to Megascans (incredible resource and can't wait for its use in games to become more practical after UE5 comes out). Tbh Unreal Engine 5 itself is to me more than enough reason to become accustomed with UE4 now. PS: and this is coming from someone with 4 years of experience in Unity and only 1 in UE

Stay with the engine you're used to. Even if some people talk about how "Unity in general is a better engine for making games" you'll probably never reach a point where you wouldn't be able to progress in unreal. That being said, i feel like learning unity is a bit more useful as opposed to unreal which to me feels like an engine designed towards a fewer selections of game genres. Unity also has a bigger community so it's easier to search up information on a subject, since EVERYTHING has been done. if you're a 3d artist, then i would recommend unreal since it's easier to put things together and make it look nice :) (though this can also be achieved through a few menus in unity)
@limdingwen4 жыл бұрын
@D.A. Botos It’s not about the graphical demos. It’s about the fact that Unity is better suited for more types of games than Unreal is, most significantly 2D and mobile, and maybe simulation games. That’s why OP said that learning Unity is more helpful, even though Unreal might look better.

Trying out different game engines for simple projects like this is pretty much pointless. Both unity and unreal can do it..
@limdingwen4 жыл бұрын
@D.A. Botos You’re right that MARS is paid (and it’s a bad decision IMO) but it’s not really needed for AR. Bolt (used to be paid) is free too (2.0 stopped development). If you wanted to see real paywalls, check out Unity before 2015. You needed a hundred dollar license for iOS, Android and so on. You also needed a license for real time shadows and a profiler. All those paywalls are gone now.
@limdingwen4 жыл бұрын
@D.A. Botos They don’t? That’s Unreal. Unreal takes a 5% cut after $1mil total (which is amazing, don’t get me wrong). Unity requires you buy a per-seat license ($399 a year) after your company reaches more than $100k yearly revenue. That’s around 0.39% per seat, maximum.

Yeah I agree that C# is an easier language to grasp, and Unity is a pretty decent engine. I personally find that a lot of the features that allow you to do things in Unity are bought from the asset store where Unreal gives them to you for free. Unreal is also more developed, they have tons of new features their constantly coming out with. Not to sell Unity short, it's a great engine but getting decent water in Unity is pretty hard to pull off as well as their particle system and it's one of the things you need an expensive plugin for to really pull off good effects.

I tell you what.. If you're developing for yourself, you can use illegal copies of plugins and they will mostly work just as intended, but if you work in a company or just earning something from your games, then purchasing a bunch of plugins isn't expensive, like at all. @@dababyobama7140 I guess, but over time that adds up to a large productivity loss, as you lose the ability to make quick iterations on a project. Most large studios have a build computer to reduce compile times for that very reason. Time is valuable if you have a job or a student, why waste it waiting for something to compile

Bro, you got off REAL lucky using Unreal Engine instead of Unity for your game, especially with the new "installation fee" policy that Unity is introducing next year 😭

@opafritzsche Жыл бұрын
@@nuggetschannelcz he should be lucky. Every Work flow is 100 times faster than in unreal. yes, you can do unreal, but why ? It s same like you will go into a Iron Maiden just to punish yourself. or you do unity. unreal is a so much bad workflow, this is truly self punishment. Lot of work for the smallest lol things. And what youg et ? Same result s like unity, what you can have in 10 Secundes, you can also do in 10 hours, just: use unreal, and you learn what it is, to waste time for nothing.

that's way easier than unreal to unity because they share a lot of the architecture. if you are clever you could make games that can be interchanged back and forth between the two engines.

I haven't done it myself, but i thought all you needed to do was use a blend tree. Only thing i can see being an issue is whether or not you want to include the legs in the blended animation from both, for which the simple solution is to just not use the legs in the punch animation if that fits what you're going for. 9:18

I developed in Unity for 3 years before switching to Unreal, and I still go back to Unity from time to time, but mostly for doing Mesh Generation algorithms. I do prefer writing my own code, and it's definitely easier to maintain code than it is to maintain Blueprints, but I definitely feel like you are making the right choice staying with Unreal. Especially for the game you are creating right now. As well, if the joke at the beginning about free merch was on some level of reality, keep in mind that Epic Games gives away 5-10 free game development assets every month on their Marketplace. They don't offer free merch to popular developers, they offer actually useful things to literally everyone. They also give away 2-4 free games a month depending on the cycle or if they do 2 at once or whatever, again for literally everyone. Even if you just made an account specifically for that. Epic Games does give back a lot.
