Phil has one of the greatest rock/metal voices ever. His range is incredible. At the end with the 3 “Gates” he hits a G5 which is incredibly difficult for a professional woman tenor to hit but Phil pulls it off cleanly. It’s not tinny like mosts people who try and hit this very high note. Phil is in my Top 5 rock/metal voices of all time. Layne Staley ,Chris Cornell,Eddie Vedder and Mike Patton(from Faith No More as he replaced Courtney Love as the second lead vocalist after Love which many people don’t know. Chris Cornell also tried out for the band) and Mr. Bungle which is a wild band.

Iron Maiden, have never been 'hair metal', not even close.... in the mid 80's they did experiment with prog metal with Somewere in Time and Seveneth Son which was when hair metal was at it's height. Best album was Peice of Mind which again is somewhat experimental but a true work of art.

@@DastardlyHamster No problem. Iron Maiden have been a bit hard to put in a box at times, their first singer was a bit more like a good punk artist then when they changed to Bruce Dickenson their sound also evolved at the same time. Bruce Dickenson is actually a classically trained opera singer hence his distinctive style, he really is/was an outstanding singer. They did share an asthetic with hair metal bands but not sound. My favorate metal album is Metalica's 'Ride the Lightening' which is awesome you should check that out...

Maiden is quintessential NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal). NWOBHM had a large influence on the Hair/Glam Metal that came along a bit later, so there's quite a bit of overlap.

it's more an 80s sentiment mixing into 80s thrash. The 90s aspect is the groovy heavy riffs. Grunge is not a factor here. great review!

New follower going back watching the old videos. Haven't gotten to the suicidal tendencies videos yet. Interested to see who is offering them up, since they're a hardcore/ thrash crossover band. Started as punk, moved to metal. Should be a reeves moment, you got your punk my metal, you got your metal in my punk (you both seem younger than me and that reference predates me, hopefully it hits)

Grunge metal? I also don't think Iron Maiden is "hair metal." Hair metal is a made up term for glam metal, which is what The Sweet, T-Rex, Motley Crue, Poison, that ilk is. Men in makeup and women's clothing with guitars. People didn't even call it hair metal until the 2000s, and its meant to be an insult about style over substance. Glam metal is cool in its own way. There are high, belty, clean singers like Halford, Dio, Dickinson, etc. and there are guttural, throaty, growly, barky, squealy singers in metal and Phil happens to be all of the above. His singing influenced everything happening during and after Pantera. Dimebag's guitar is something all its own. Very unique and instantly recognizable.
@Samford_10 ай бұрын
i generally wouldn't recommend watching the music videos unless theyre live songs. this song cut out the intro, which completely changes the context of the song. the main riff isn't nearly as cool without the intro
@dennisrichards260410 ай бұрын
Singer Phil was a Judas Priest fan, thats where the high vocal influence comes from. He'd kick yer ass if he heard you call it grunge metal lol. They HATED grunge for the most part. Pantera took the metal flag from Metallica when they went Black Album and ran with it. This band flew the metal flag thru the 90's and have influence over most metal bands that have come since.
@NickPyke-ee4xk5 ай бұрын
Before Phil came onto vocals, members of pantera were a hair metal band, not sure if called the same name at that time. Phil brought range and a place for dimebag to go heavier

Unfortunately most reactors do the official video but what these reactors don't realize is that the official version cuts about 2 minutes off the version. The first 2 minutes on the lyric version is so great. Beautiful acoustic and electric guitar at the beginning of the song. It's such a shame that the 2 minutes were cut off. Such a beautiful beginning. Younger generations are too used to listening to so-called music that is made by using a computer to produce a best. A lot of these people do not use guitars, drums, etc and other musical instruments. I don't know how many times I have come across reactors who have no idea if a guitar is being played because they haven't heard that sound. They grow up in a generation that, as far as I'm concerned, is musically lazy and inept. It's scary to leave music from such talented musicians in the hands of these young people who have no idea of the importance. You see bands like Metallica, AC/DC, Iron Maiden and many others who started in the 70's and 80's and are still touring and recording after 40 and 50 years. The fact that Metallica and AC/DC and Iron Maiden are still filling up stadiums to this day shows their amazing musicality and importance to the world. You won't find him hop artists or pop artists or even current newer rock bands that will last and be popular thru all age groups like the old masters. You can start researching bands from the 70's and 80's that are still playing and will be amazed how many there are. Queen, Def Leppard, Pantera are just a few others still playing stadiums and putting out music. Sorry for my novel here but my point is that they don't make amazing music like they used to today unless it's the original artist still playing. Long live the great music if the past and hope that current and future generations are wise enough to save the music and take care of it. 🤔🫣🥺

loving your reviews. :) No disrespect in my below comments, just as an original Metal Head who grew up through the start of metal up to today, I am trying to clarify things: What Phil did is considered a metal scream. Iron Maiden is not hair metal they are Heavy Metal (they were around before all the subgenres). Glam Metal are bands like Poison, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Lita Ford. Metal did not become the guttural growls, what happened is that subgenres of metal formed in which singers would sing that way. To this day, metal is not all, or even mostly, guttural growling, it's still just a subgenre. I'm assuming that style of metal is your favorite or what you grew up with, Mika? Pantera never got into grunge, they stayed metal from Cowboys In Hell to the end. They were classified as Thrash Metal (after their 4 glam metal albums prior to Cowboys Form Hell) They did popularize (and some say create) Groove Metal. Their first 4 albums, prior to Cowboys From Hell, were straight up rock/glam rock. Grunge is bands like Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.

Grunge metal? Naw fam. GROOVE metal. Lmao calling Iron Maiden a hair metal band. They're power metal. Hair metal is WASP, Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, Cinderella, Poison, Skid Row, Guns N Roses, and basically ALL the bands I hated in the 80s. I was more of a Slayer, Sepultura, Death, Cannibal Corpse, Exodus, Testament, Obituary, Megadeth, Sacred Reich, Kreator, Anthrax, MOD, SOD, Vio-lence, etc type in the 80s.

Iron Maiden was never hair metal but classic heavy metal. And Pantera is not grunge at all. You won't find any aggression and brutal riffs that Pantera is mostly known of in grunge bands. Back then they were considered as thrash metal. Different than other big thrash bands but still. Greetings from Poland!
