Convoy C8+ W5050SQ3 Transcript
General thoughts after a week of usage/size comparison/practicality/interesting things:
• The C8+ was one of the first Convoy lights I've owned and this is my second one. It's the version with the new W5050SQ3 - a round die emitter that produces a near-perfect hotspot.
• What comes in the box: the light itself, lanyard.
• Size comparison with L21B, M21B, M21F
Overall Construction, LED, lens, bezel and reflector
• High-quality machining and finish. No rough spots on the finish, though I noticed some minor areas where the anodizing was scratched off. Lots of colors available, I have one in tan. The light has a noticeably large head which makes it uncomfortable to carry in your jeans pocket, but that's the trade-off for extra throw. I like the simple, elegant design, cutouts on the head, and crenulated bezel.
• The W5050SQ3 is a round die LED that seems to be a decent alternative to the SFT40. I have the 6500K version but you can also order one in 3000K warm white. Large SMO reflector with glass lens.
UI - modes
• 12 groups. I have the 5-mode grouping (0.1, 1, 10, 35, 100%). You can set it to 100% mode only and use this as a 'tactical' mode. You can also deactivate memory mode too. This is handy if you want the light to always start in the first mode. Reverse clicky - press completely to switch on. Half-press to cycle between modes.
Performance - total output, beam profile, longevity, practicality
• CCT, CRI, Ceiling bounce test
• Beam profile - circular hotspot. I noticed up close on a white wall, the edges of the hotspot have some minor artefacts. They’re not visible from 20+ meters.
Considerations
• No onboard charging. No battery included.
• Ran some ceiling bounce tests and found that the W5050SQ3 produces approximately 2/3 the light of an SFT40. Similar or slightly less light than the CULPM1.TG
• Size factor - it's not going to fit in your jeans pocket.
Verdict
• This is a great value thrower flashlight - based on previous reviews of this light with the SFT40, it appears that this version throws a little further but produces less light. The C8+ is a staple in the flashlight community, and it's easy to see why with the incredible value for price. I'll leave the link to Simon's store below in the description if you want to get one. I was thinking about the L21B but I was torn on emitters, it's holding me back on other projects, I'm in a procrastination OCD loop 😂 I think the z1 In 3000k is neat but I think he L21B or heavier cooler looking less balanced L21A, but that litte c8 +isn't far off output wise and so small, but L21b seems to be the target, you ever make hummus, I'm overdue to make hummus lol. I could never get into the footy here, and it's expected that you know stuff about it, talk about it at work - I find it boring and an excuse to drink 😂 the L21B is a great throwy host. I have one with a CULPM1.F1 and XHP70.3 HI. It's less compact but a better option if you need longer distance performance. Hummus.. I buy mine pre made 😅

I have a convoy m21b XHP 70.3 HI 4000K. Compared to the C8+ on your diode, which one will emit further and wider? Which one is better suited for hunting at a distance of 200 meters.?

@dmitriybalakshin5241 both iterations would be provide sufficient illumination at 200m but this 5050SQ3 will have a more intense hotspot and better visibility, especially in different atmospheric conditions (fog). I find moisture or dust in the air can reduce the throw of a light significantly so better to have a lower spread/output LED like the 5050SQ3 / SFT40 / CULPM1.TG if you're planning to use it for hunting.

You'd be better off getting another one with an SFT40 or CSLPM1. You can try putting a SMO reflector into it but it may not focus nicely. ​@@dmitriybalakshin

yo darren got a question, will an 18650 with onboard usb-c charging fit in this bad boy? Also is a battery like that a bad idea for lights due to high resistance or something

Hey, yeah those cells should work fine - this isn't a light that pulls 10+ amps. I think this is a 5A driver - most 18650 cells can handle that easily, even protected ones.

Hi, I have four of these emitters in different hosts and all good so far. Granted I test them pretty extensively for a couple weeks but I don't perform runtime tests @100% until the battery goes flat. Just have to make sure they're not running too hot or high amps.

I have a litokala 18650 cell but the 30Q is better. It won't matter which one you use as the light has a 5A regulated driver. ​@@b-cons_humidor

No, the longest throw is CSLNM1 in green. Then CULPM1.F1 (Green). Then the normal white ones of each.

The W5050. It has a bit more throw. Not a big deal if you prefer more lumens in the SFT40.

You'll need to get an 18650 battery charger. XTAR do some good ones like the VC4 or VC8.

Depends if you want more light - if so, larger LEDs like the XHP70.3. But for throw, probably the osram W2 or this W5050SQ3.

Pretty certain the TS11 throws further. It has a larger lens/bezel. So not comfortable to store in pocket.
