Hey bub. So some useful info-tools for your tribe from ours: 1. We've kept tea lights around as our emergency candles for years and years, so we vouch for their usefulness. 2. Tea lights are so prolific of a candle that there are oodles and oodles of variants for tea light sizes, weights, wax blends, etc. 3. We keep tea light stations in our house at each person habitating area and dark zone in case of power outages and needing lights (bedrooms, living rooms, bathrooms, etc.) At those light stations we store 1 tea light lantern, 1 bic lighter, 1 box of matches, about 5 tea lights, and a glow stick for back-up. 4. Check out a "somavor" if you'd like an inside or outside cook stove /water heater. Think rocket stove, hibachi, and tea kettle all rolled into one object. 5. You scored water pasteurization in your video and I didn't hear you mention it. From Google, "Heating water to 65° C (149° F) for 6 minutes, or to a higher temperature for a shorter time, will kill all germs, viruses, and parasites.3 This process is called pasteurization." The tea light systems can achieve this. Enjoy. Thanks for vid posting.

Robin.. go to a hobby craft store and pick up some wicking.. while you are there get a few votive candle tubs..I am always on the look out for large pillar candles at yard sales... You can take the metal wick holders of the tea light candles and with a pair of pliers bend three legs down, shove a finishing nail through the original wick hole and make your own emergency candles
@randomnesspersonified4 жыл бұрын
@@kevinrehberg8758 The amount of wasted wax when using some of those big candles is criminal, so many of them only have one wick and leave a ton of wax unused - I couldn't stand it! So I bought some wick and I save all of the wax from candles where the wick burned to nothing yet there's a ton of wax left. Then I pour it (melted, obviously) back into the glass containers that some of my scented candle Christmas/birthday gifts (long since burned away) originally came in. I get a piece of cardboard cut from something like a cereal box with a small hole in it and place it over the top of the container, with the wick through the hole, to keep the wick upright and straight - no need to buy those special gadgets for that purpose, and you can just make 3 holes and put 3 wicks if you have a large left over candle container. I'm just about to use my third length of wick on wax left over from a large candle I was given - imagine if all that wax was just thrown away, what a waste. I've got a little pot where I keep all the metal wick holders from previous tea light candles too, ready to put new wicks into and make new candles from excess wax.
@kevinrehberg87584 жыл бұрын
@@randomnesspersonified I don't waste the wax either. The un-melted "piping" gets trimmed back and saved for later use. That was the reason for suggesting votive candle holders along with the extra wicking so that all of the wax is used to the most economical use

I had an issue with "wax self ignition" using the two pot method..That inner pot gets EXTREMELY hot even using a convection relief hole.. my solution.. use one of those small personal fans to push air between the pots.. it accelerates the warm air through the relief hole and slightly cools the inner pot.. it also helps to cool the candle by circulating the surround air

I have often wondered how many tea lights it would take to boil enough water to brew a cup of coffee and for how long. I thought of putting the tea lights on the bottom floor of our oven with the oven race placed in the lowest position. It seems to me it would be safer to use the oven rather than the top of the stove because the enclosed space would help retain the heat from the candles. I also think the water would come to a boil sooner if a disposable aluminum pan was used rather than a thick saucepan. I did some research on what the ideal temperature is for brewing coffee. I found several different opinions but it seems anywhere between 165 to 190 is a popular choice. Some say you should not use boiling water to make coffee because the coffee will taste burnt. Based on your experiment, it takes 6 minutes for water to reach 154 degrees in a saucepan of average thickness. So, I would suspect that it would take less than 6 minutes to heat water for coffee if the pan was thinner, such as an aluminum foil pan covered with a piece of foil. Also, if a round aluminum foil cake pan was used, then a round glass lid like the one you used would work better, since you wouldn't have to waste a piece of foil on a square or rectangular pan. The Dollar store also sells the round cake pans. And if you use it to only boil water, then more than likely the pan can be used multiple times.

Back in my student days I moved into an unfurnished studio with a futon couch and a few pots and pans, including a couple of bread tins. I ate a lot of ramen and eggs cooked over a bread pan full of tealights for dinner in those days. I even tried a reflecting hearth with cardboard covered with aluminum foil so I would lose as little radiant heat as possible to take the edge of the chill off the room. I can't recommend such a 'heater' -- it's not a safe practice, and candle smoke leaves a lot of soot, but the tealight stove does work in a pinch. Thanks for the memories!

Michael I've made them too. Stacked 5 tea light candles inside. Close the 'flaps' and put the can inside a cut off disposable water bottle. The height of the cut off bottle is just below the rim of the soda can lantern. Bottle protects the soda can from being crushed in a pack. Can be used as a drinking container or a place to stow the extra tea lights while the lantern is in use. This combo makes a great gift, IMO, to friends & family to help them be a bit more self-sufficient. Can also make up a bunch of these lanterns for barter. PS: Use a lighter to smooth the cut edge of the bottle used to stash the lantern. Lightly "singe" (for lack of a better term) to remove the sharp edge.

I was thinking that instead of continuing cooking until the rice is done. A method that I know of is taking it off the heat conserving your fuel by whatever method and wrapping the pot in a towel, etc. insulating it to keep the heat in and finishing the cooking that way. If it is done or near done or needs a little more cooking time or reheating then put it on for a short time. It is in one book where they have a pre=made hollow in a bunch of straw, set the pot in and cover with a large lid over the whole thing. the idea is to conserve fuel by using residual heat to finish the cooking.
@ChrisSmith-vc7xs5 жыл бұрын
Ding ding, winner! Jeanette, you're right about the straw-box technique. I was near floored when I found out that the bottom drawer of the oven is actually a warmer/continue to cook box. I found that out in a 1960's handyman book set, it was showing how to improve the cooking insulation in there.

Similar concept along the lines of how thru-backpackers use one those DIY insulating covers they make out of Reflectix. I saw one guy do the same (finish his cooking in his insulator thing). Backpacker cooking videos on YT have also been a great resource on fuel and space saving meal ideas that are / could be helpful in bug out or bug in scenarios. They make some interesting combination of calorie dense, but light (in carry weight) meals to cook as well. Had no idea what a Ramen Bomb was until a few weeks ago. 😄 They also inspired me to get a food dehydrator as soon as one hits my ideal price on Amazon. Had to add yet another price tracking wish list category as a result (have over 100).

I just got a couple of weeks ago a Biolite Camp Stove. It was what I wanted as a birthday gift. Now it's not cheap but not super expensive. They run about $130 and up. This little canister also has a generator type thing you put on the side. The heat from the fire makes energy and it has a USB port so you can charge a phone or tablet. It also has a fan whose power is also generated from the heat. It burns twigs and small pieces of wood . You can use wood pellets. Now they can be purchased with a grill for cooking but that jacks up the price. This little stove gets really hot and burns very clean. Don't burn leaves, too smokey. I'll going to weld with my brother's help a grill on legs for the stove. If you're interested just google it and check it out. I've really had fun with it just building fires. I've loved building fires since I was a kid and we'd go camping. I do have a bunch of tealights and candles of all sizes.

Patty Wacker I don't do pm. But I will try to tell you a couple easy to do helps. 1) sit on chair. Stretch out feet in front of you toes up. Lean forward & down over your legs. Suck in belly & hold until twinge eases. Then lean a little farther & repeat. Sit up & stretch hands/arms up to ceiling. Relax. Repeat as many times as you have time for as often as you can during the day. (not more than 3 stretches within an hour). 2) stand with back to wall. Butt touching. Place heal backs against same wall FEET TOGETHER. Stand straight. Knees straight. DON'T LOOK DOWN. Head should be touching wall in middle back of head. Shoulders should be flat to wall. Hands at sides touching flat to wall. Rotate hips so back is flatter. Hold on twinge. Count to alphabet song full sing through. Relax. Repeat at least 6 x daily. 3) lay across a twin bed parallel to foot. Straight. On back. Shoulders should be even with edge of mattress. Knees may be bent to start. SLOWLY LOWER HEAD OVER SIDE OF BED till head is hanging down. Neck will twinge but if shoulders are straight it won't hurt. Hold for alphabet song. Then turn sideways. And push up to sitting. Repeat only 2x daily. This helps because lumps are all in other places & bending knees puts correct bend in back. Hope these help you as they do me. Learned these many many years ago. When stressed doing these to calming music of your choice will help too
