Don't just pour out the water. Clean water is available, in those jars, for canning the food that's replacing the water. My pressure canner needs 3 quarts of water to operate. Waterbath canning needs even more. Plus, hot pack canning requires liquid to be added to food. Usually water or broth.

Just a sugestion for storage. I use the 55 gallon barrels that non-toxic waterline antifreeze for boats and RV's comes in for my storage. There food grade plastic and you can usually find them(in colder climates) at most any marina or RV place for free or very inexpensivly. First I use pool shock and fill them up full and let them set for a couple days just to remove any of the flavor you'd get from the barrels previous contents and to super clean them. There is also a water 'sweatener' used for boat and RV water tanks that does well to eliminate that also. I always keep at least 500 gallons of water at minimum stored in them. Plus at least another 200 gallons in other containers. First I filter it with my normal whole house filter, with a a .002 carbon filter ,then run it through a secondary "cira-grava" ( Berkey style) ceramic filter then add the sugested 8 drops of bleach per gallon just to be sure. Water will be the most important prep to have if things go South. So definatly don't scrimp on water purification. I also have the life straws but do be aware they do not filter out pathogyns and many viris's. The Sawyer filters are a much better option for that and only 2-3 dollars more @ Walmart. They filter out much more and have a much higher filtration rate and volume before needing to be replaced. Life Straws are only marginal at best in there performance . I also have a Pur/Katadine "pro Hiker" hand pump filter that I have used all over the world and for many many years while working with the Forest Service, there fantastic ! I've had mine for >40 years and they have always allowed me to have safe water any place in the world ,no matter how bad the water was to start with. God Bless and I hope this information will help out folks new to water filtration. I've spent well over 25 years working and hiking the wilderness worldwide so what I use is a tried and true method. My system has never failed me once in all those years and I've never gotten sick even once by using these methods and tools so my sugestions you can take to the bank as being safe methods of water purification..

One thing I heard from the outdoor folks: If you intend to purify water by boiling it, all you really need is to get it to a strong, rolling boil. Waiting for ten minutes is not needed.
@oldtimerlee88204 жыл бұрын
Boiling water does not purify water. It doesn't remove anything from the water. It simply kills microorganisms that cause water borne illness. Per CDC, bring clear water to a boil and boil it for 1 minute, 3 minutes for altitudes above 6500 feet. Water should be filtered through something to remove debris, letting silt settle and decanting the clear water for boiling. Basically, a boil is the indicator that the temperature is high enough for pasteurization.

Our community is really on top of the latest Disaster Preparedness Action plans and have the assistance of the Fire Department next door (90 seconds response time). My helmet, heavy shoes, leather gloves, 72 hours worth of water and info about who on our cul-de-sac has essential equipment available. Can a person DRINK BLEACH IN WATER FOR LONG DURATION'S ? ? I rented from an LA County Medical Examiner years ago, and HE SAID set tap water in GLASS out overnight to let the chemicals dissipate ? Does that make sense to yu ? Been drinking that for decades -I'm still alive, but who know? He was a double biology major-and He lived into his late 90's doing this! (if u are a chemist; what SOLUTION should the scarves be washed in? Bleach water ?) My X was a chemist, but he used vinegar and alcohol as a cleaner, cuts grease; PERHAPS U know the solution here ? A small correction to one of your comments.....milk jugs are HDPE (#2 in the triangle) and is exactly the same plastic that you're using in your example. HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) is widely used in food grade containers. If your concern is over the fact that they contained milk, that can be easily remedied by cleaning thoroughly with hot water and dish detergent and/or bleach. Edit to add: a Lifestraw, or similar product is limited to a relatively small amount of use and can get you killed, or at least very sick.....you never want to drink directly from a stream, creek, and especially a mud hole, even through a straw type filter. They only filter out particulates, (as do all common portable filters) and DO NOT filter viruses....that's why boiling or purifying is necessary AFTER filtering and BEFORE consumption. I recommend looking into the Sawyer "Squeeze" or "Mini" as they offer the absolute best compact system available for their industry leading capabilities and price point. I personally use the "Mini".... sectionhiker.com/sectionhiker-gear-guide/10-best-backpacking-water-filters/

I just found your channel and you provided me with more practical advice on water than most KZbin channels combined. It's the word practical and your gentle confidence made me feel I could take care of my family during a disaster. I agree with you, I don't prep for zombies or Doomsday scenarios. I try to prep for real world emergencies, which for us in New England are snowstorms, no power and cold. However, in these uncertain times I think planning for long-term emergencies, lack of food in the stores, no gas, no electricity is something we need to up our preps for. I plan to go back through and read many of your videos. Thank you from this 67 year old mother to three and grandmother to six, who mean the world to me. Not all bleaches are the same. chlorox brand contains between 6-8% sodium hypochlorite but dollar store brands may only contain 3% so you may need to double the amount. Boiling water 1minute is sufficient for making it potable 10 minutes is overkill. When using iodine tablets to purify, DO NOT use both tablets at the same time. The other tablet is for removing the iodine taste AFTER your water is purified. it will nullify the iodine tablet if used together. One thing to note about the Lifestraw product(I own two of them)...as stated in the instruction sheet "This filter is not certified to remove bacteria or viruses"(like giardia and cryptosporidia). You'd need to boil or use iodine or bleach first. I prefer the Sawyer mini filter or Sawyer bottle/filter combo. Keep researching and keep spreading the word! Thanks

Hi Christa, great video with good advice. You asked if anyone knew a way to freshen water. Well I'm going to show my age, but my grandmother had a cistern for water. When the water didn't taste "fresh" she added 1 tablespoonful of Soda of Alum for each 20 gallons of water. She knew the markings on the cistern wall to know how much water she had. I have never researched this, just remember it as a kid. Maybe someone can research this as well as the shelf life of Alum.

Most municipal water systems have minor leaks that are of nil effect so long as the system stays under pressure. If there is a power/pressure loss, the system may suck in debris from the surrounding dirt and contaminate the system. California water laws (if they are followed in a disaster scenario) require periodic sampling to see if there are any bugs in the water. Testing usually takes several days so one has to be wary as notification may come late.. Rely on yourselves!

@Karl Schubert Nothing crazy about it. You didn't ask how many gallons of water she has stored. You didn't ask if she has other water stored and this "canned water" is just a supplement. You didn't ask if she has means to obtain water that will need to be treated before use. You didn't ask if she has the appropriate supplies needed for that treatment. I suspect there have been many people who would have lived if they'd had just one more 1/2 gallon of water to drink. Canning jars, of all sizes take up space. They are NOT used and tossed away like so much in our "disposable" society. Keeping those jars filled with potable water is an excellent way have better utilization of that space. If the jars are needed for canning, use the water in them for the canning process. Next, it doesn't matter how many jars of "canned water" she has on hand. Water is a precious commodity when it's not available. Thus, every PINT she stores is a valuable asset, one that can be priceless in some circumstances. If she's crazy, I'm crazy for keeping 4 full cases of bottled water on hand, even though I know they won't prolong my life very long. I'm also crazy for keeping some water purification tablets on hand. I know they won't prolong my life very long, either. The pack has 30 tablets. Use is 1 per quart of water. BTW, every 100 1/2- gallon jars have the potential to have 50 gallons of fairly easy transported water. Water that doesn't taste like plastic. Water with an unlimited shelf life. Having a 100 1/2-gallon jars isn't impossible. At least not here in the SE USA. My mother and grandmother used them to can tomato juice. Moonshiners used quite a few of them. I bought a 100+, a few years ago from someone that I suspect had a family member with a little operation on a creek in our area.

Sawyer filter bags are also a great idea. The bag holds the water, and can be hung up, and the filter is at the end of a hose. I have not seen them here, but gave 1000s out in Puerto Rico, a 2 gl version. Only found one gl here on the mainland.

Hi Christa, I just love your videos on preparedness. Been watching since last summer. God is very good! You are a Christ Ambassador and thank you for sharing His Word with us!! Refreshing. Calming. Pleasant. Just had to say that. On saving water. We do keep at least 2 cases of drinking water at all times just in case. However we Do save tap water in washed clean food safe jugs for cleaning purposes so we don't have to use the drinking water for that. We soak plastic juice bottles in mild soapy water for a couple of days with the lid on. Smear raw dish soap on the inside of the lid first. Work it into the threads. Pour that water out. Then wash out thouraly with fresh hot soapy water and rinse very well. I do NOT recommend using old milk jugs for this. Tried it. Never worked. You can't get all the milk film out of it no matter what you do. Keep some clean wash water on hand too! Love you Sister!

As for the LifeStraw, it's good but again, you can't really conceal it in your pocket & currently I can easily fit ALL my essential survival gear IN MY PANTS POCKETS! (Knife, lighter, paracord, shelter, container, etc) Yes, I also have a go-bag but remember, 2 is 1 & 1 is none, & the more you know the less you need._* *Liberty = peace & I pray you all always enjoy both!*

Hey Mrs. Prepsteader, Great video! I love your great information and especially your demeanor (esp. your scriptural passages that are indeed priceless). This old Vietnam vet (Marine) and Presbyterian missionary knows a bit about the importance of clean water. Hands down the very best water purifier and body detoxifier is Clorine Dioxide also known as the "Master Mineral Soulution". (which is not the same a "bleach", that has carcinogenic byproducts). Check it out you will be amazed and blessed. Keep up the good work. Pastor Jack

Danger: Don’t Drink Miracle Mineral Solution or Similar Products The FDA warns you not to drink sodium chlorite products such as Miracle Mineral Solution. These products can make you sick.
@angelinebaekhave23264 жыл бұрын
Candie It doesn’t actually make u sick...u might want to research first bf u advise against it. Chlorine dioxide IS NOT the same as sodium chlorite!. MMS ( chlorine dioxide ) fights against bacteria, viruses ( yes coronavirus) anti inflammatory, detoxify, sterilize, fungicidal, etc. Chlorine dioxide has been recognized as a disinfectant since the early1900s and has been approved by the FDA and EPA for many applications!
@shaynalittle35294 жыл бұрын
@@angelinebaekhave2326 I think you are both right......The miracle Mineral Solution says that it is sodium chlorite....but sodium dioxide is a gas given off of sodium chlorite when mixed with......not sure where an individual would buy the dioxide....because one site said that it is made on site of where it will be used because its a gas.......still looking anyway here is one site that I came across........www.chemicalsafetyfacts.org/chlorine-dioxide/

Your videos are so enjoyable on a variety of levels. Part of preparing for the event of disaster is imagining the circumstances and setting up a mindset that will make me mindful of the best choice in regards to the items that I will be collecting. The same mindset allows me to discover the possible social devolution likely to occur. I am also concerned with how to adjust beyond the first 30 days when the supplies grow low and the reality of the change in lifestyle begins to gnaw at my psyche. Often in building my mindset, I become engulfed in a storm of anxiety. The presentation of your videos is warm and assuring. They help stabilize and calm the process of the mindset. It's good that you include ideas for spiritual sustainability to take stock of along with food, water, and health supplies. You have invited favorite scripture. I enjoy the message found in Hebrews 6:13 through 19. Thank you for the time you spend sharing with us.

Thanks basic and easy to do. I'm 65 and live in my 20ft caravan out bush with the dog. I'm moving to a creek next week to begin isolation. I've prepped for coronovirus when it arrives. Water is muddy but not stagnant. If i use Alum to clean the mud out, is the Alum harmfull to drink. I use 1 tsp in 20lts. Overnight the water clear and mud has fallen to the bottom. Best to siphon clean water out so not to disturb the sediment. I'm in QLD Australia.

A good alternative to the cloth filter is to use one of those permanent filters for the coffee maker with some additional paper filters.. No .....its not perfect.. but its a lot better than trying to pour through fabric because it holds a perimeter shape that you can look through and see when you pour a water borne larva into your filter..Yes ... you should sterilize the water as well with the 10 minutes of boiling but you don't want a continuous hard rolling boil.. once it comes to the bubbling action reduce the heat to keep the boil "active" but as calm as possible to prevent excessive water loss.. 212 degrees of temperature will kill anything viral or bacterial in nature

Serves several purposes..1) Buffer when you open the freezer when all the cold air rushes out..fridge will cycle less. 2) Keeps the fridge cold during the occasional outage. It kept all cold when I lost power for 3 days.. I kept the fridge closed. 3) Emergency water supply... if it ever gets that bad.
