I studied nihongo for a few years but later in life found a Chinese girl studying in Sweden yesterday we celebrated 9 year wedding anniversary. I do a bit of Chinese studies everyday for 560+ days already with Duolingo but my pronunciation is not good, but then the other day my wife made some new dish she wanted me to taste, and I said ooh is that Bingfen?? She was chocked, how did I know that?? Do I have a second Chinese girlfriend??? So refereed to your video from Chongqing, so that made my day I surprised her with something Chinese way out of her expectation. So just used your referral link to get the lifetime membership, I just hope my pronunciations will be as good as our kids that speak fluent mandarin :) Stay strong in Beijing soon the lock down will be over!

I'm a Beijinger living in Sydney and the scenes featured in your video are all places I frequented when I was a student. It's great to see the history of Beijing in your video for a global audience. The Wanning Bridge, also known as the Houmen Bridge, the two dividing beasts are now protected by a fence, which used to be absent, so feel free to go over and take photos. I haven't bought the Gulou steamed buns, there are too many people in line every time, and like you said, they are just steamed buns , and you can't get the taste of lamb. I hope everything goes well for you in Beijing and that you take more videos of local life in Beijing so that I can see what changes have taken place back home.

My wife's from Kunming and we marinate our cucumber in soysauce, garlic and Lao Gan Ma for at least 6 hours (in the fridge). It makes the taste of the cucumber so much better. I hope we'll be able to go back to China next year when all restrictiions are lifted. We miss Kunming teribly. Maybe you could do a video on School Nr 1 in Kunming that, according to the central state exams had been the best school in China for the past 10-15 years. One of the administrative people there once told me they kept the number of students "low" to keep the high quality. When I asked what she considered to be a low number of students, it turned out that the two campusses together hold more than 1200 students! My wife is an alumni of that school and both she and her late father used to be teachers there. Plus there is so much more to see in Kunming and the rest of Yunnan!

I still remember the first time I traveled to BJ in '82. We, 4 blokes, didn't have those "food tickets" or whatever it was called. We probably paid a lot more than the locals for food. Later on one of us got some of those tickets from a relative. We only then found out that staple food was sold by weight, instead of by item number. Long gone were those days.

Brought back memories of our first visit to China, four years ago. We stayed in a hutong hotel in the Dongsi district of Beijing. Went for a walk to find something to eat and saw several queues for takeaway food. Frustrating, because we never gave it a thought that everything would be in Mandarin only so we never had a clue what they were selling. As with all the menus in restaurants. An English menu in China is rarer than hen's teeth. Fortunately, there are KFCs and McDs everywhere which we sometimes used to stop us from starving. Love Blondie's videos because they are not propoganda - just about life in China.
