This video you have just done, is amazing. I applaud you. Young people today, need to know, but are not taught these basics. I am 72, and I have, and keep, every item you listed in stock, as I myself, over forty years ago, out of necessity, had to learn to cook from scratch. I was left totally on my own, to learn which supplies I needed to always keep on hand. Preparing a meal from scratch, with homegrown and processed, meats and vegetables, and homemade sides, without all the additives of factory processed, is so much healthier for you. Being self sufficient, in the kitchen, leaves one feeling proud, confident, and accomplished.

This is very interesting to me. I am 67, just retired, and I finally have the time and emotional energy to cook all of my food. It is an adventure. I try a new recipe 1-3 times a week, and am gradually working on a list of foods I will regularly cook. I am also adding the new foods to my grocery list gradually. It is a financial expense to get my kitchen stocked up. It is of course tons cheaper than eating out. I am really enjoying the adventure, and appreciate your video!

You brought tears to my eyes. It was like you could read my mind. My youngest is a college student, my oldest son is disabled. I was a 911 dispatcher who suffered through throat cancer (I never smoked, ever) I lost my voice box. My line of work I need to be able to speak. As soon as my job found out what happened they let me go. I was placed on disability because my cancer just kept popping up in different places. So with medical bills and disability check only, we were strapped. Hot dogs, chicken legs and spaghetti, peanut butter and jelly, ugh. A true test for a mom is making some old foods that are in the house taste different and interesting and good for you. It was a tough 5 years but we pulled through. We are eating a little better. Watching videos of you, Perbain, Noreen's Kitchen, Bev from Our Half Archer Homestead, Suttons Daze, and Linda's Pantry. Teaching me to get back to basics and doing it all homemade was the difference and "I" got enjoyment out of it. Now I LOVE MY INSTANT POT, lol lol lol. Thank you so much, your videos not just helped with recipe, canning and dehydrating ideas...THEY KEPT ME SANE.

Heather you have outdone yourself with this one. It is difficult when you get in the store and there is a half an aisle of choices for one or two products. This gives beginners a place to start. This list is good for those young brides just starting out who maybe have never been in the kitchen and learning at Mom's knee, as well as those who need to cook from scratch for what ever reason. I would add a simple cook book to this list. A very good example of that is Dining on a Dime. Easy recipes to follow that even beginners who are clueless can follow and produce a meal they can be proud of. God Bless you for your caring heart.

Hi Heather, Great video. And I am so with you...instant yeast and keep it in the freezer!! It lasts beautifully. And I am so with you on the lard...amen!! I also recently experimented and made my own vegetable bouillon which I dehydrated and made it shelf stable. And you can dry it in the oven, so you don’t need a dehydrator. And it’s so cheap to make. Basically 2 cups of sea salt and “clean out the crisper” of veggies! Mix it all together and chop it all up in a blender or food processor, then spread thinly on parchment paper and dry it in the oven at 175F. It’s great. Thanks for such a great list. Love your videos and yes would love for you in your spare time (whenever you decide to give up sleeping)to publish an online cookbook Hint: I never throw away my vegetable cuttings after cutting onions, carrots, celery, mushroom ends, asparagus ends.,etc. I throw into a large freezer bag and keep in freezer until the end of the month. Place all into a soup pot and cover with water bring to a boil and cook for about 1-1/2 to 3 hours. Drain and discard the softened vegs. Cool the liquid and place in ice cube or soup cube trays (I have the silicone kind) Freeze then pop out and put into freezer bag. They are super good to make soup with leftovers or add to rice in place of water. This way you cut down on waste and never waste one bit of the food you buy.

We have helped people struggling over the years, and when I buy them groceries (we don't give money, ) I always include a 10 lb bag of potatoes, a bag of rice, pasta, salad mix or lettuce, fresh or frozen chicken, and ground beef, kielbasa sausage, pasta sauce, bread, a block of cheese, a box of cereal, milk, coffee, sugar, flour or baking mix, eggs, and condiments. Enough to feed them 3 meals a day for 2 weeks. It's amazing how this helps. If I work hard at finding the best prices, it costs about $50 to $60. tfs 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼

This made my heart ache a little. There was a time when I "did what I could" and ate a LOT of hot dogs and spaghetti. But as American's we truly have no CLUE how blessed we are, even when it's just Hot Dogs in tomato sauce for supper. I live in Pakistan right now and I miss home SO VERY MUCH, but have come to see for myself what "poor" really is. If you have somewhere to sleep in peace, if you have ANYTHING that can fill your stomach, if your shoes are not tied together at the top by one string that you keep having to replace and if your children are still giggling and laughing, instead of constantly worrying about helping Mamma feed their brothers and sisters, you are far better off than 3/4's of the worlds population today. You have a genuine heart for others and it shows so clearly when you post these types of videos. I love watching your videos regardless of what they are, honestly. It makes me feel closer to home, in many ways. Keep giving, Heather. You will never be "without" because your "stores will be blessed to overflowing" with all the good you spread around. Be blessed.

Thank you for this list! I was mentally checking off what I have in my pantry in comparison to this list. I love cooking from scratch and it has come in very handy as my husband has been laid off for five months. 💕

Awesome video! A fun idea for bridal showers is to put together a basket of some of these basic ingredients and a few tried and true recipes, add a couple of wooden spoons, kitchen towels ect. I also put together a recipie box for a sister ,who never really cooked ,of the family favorites we made growing up.

For graduation gifts we give an empty cookbook with a recipe from us as a starter and when I remember I tell the kid's mother to ask guests to bring a recipe with them to add to the book. It's a great motivator and starter for a young person. Naturally we give them a cash gift as well. They need to buy ingredients after all. lol

I absolutely love this video. I have watched it over and over again. You are amazing. I can not wait to start cooking from scratch that is how inspiring you are. As a single mom working full time and going back to school I need something that will help me keep costs down and prevent the "freshman thirty". I might be crying the first month too because I really dislike not knowing how to do something but knowing others have gone through the same will be much easier. Thank you for sharing. I've already watched a ton of your other videos. Off to watch more with a pen and paper in hand to take notes!

Great job! This was a wonderful video! I also cook from scratch, it is the way my mom taught me. There were four kids to feed as I was growing up and scratch cooking was the only choice. We also had a huge garden which I called our “ babysitter “ because while my parents worked we had to take care of the garden. Then we helped with the canning of the veggies! I still cook from scratch and can a ton of food . I’ve never been one to buy packaged food because of the cost and fillers in them. I understand why people buy prepared/ packaged food because of the convenience and or just not know where to start cooking meals from scratch. It can be daunting if you have no one to teach you. I was fortunate that I learned from my mom because I am unable to work right now and my canned goods and home cooking has saved us! We rarely eat, maybe 3-4 times a year which also helps out. We also do not mind eating leftovers either!

This is great sugar. I always use crushed tomatoes because then you don't have to wait for it to get thick. Unfortunately I have to make my own stock because hubby is allergic to celery and there is not a box or bottle of stock out there that I've found that doesn't have it in it. I love the list. Have added to mine now as I forgot some things. Thanks Heather!!

Loved this video. I was surprised to see I have most of those things already. But, I know the other things I need. Seasonings are huge in our house. I have drawers, and cabinets full of seasonings. Lol I love that you are so helpful, and go into why you need these things. You gave me an idea with the onion soup mix. I usually use it for stews, but I'm going to try it in my hamburgers the next time. Thank you so much, for sharing this!!!!! 💗💗💗
